Wine Advocate (95)

Produced from purchased grapes, the 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is serious and structured, enforcing a change of pace after the series of Puligny-Montrachet grands crus. Mingling notes of pear and citrus oil with hints of toasted bread, white flowers and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and chalky, with palpable structuring dry extract and tangy balancing acids.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

In 2021 the Boillot Corton-Charlemagne is all from Aloxe and not the three communes. Mid lemon yellow. The nose has some style, flesh and floral and potentially stony. More wood is showing at the back but there is so much wine still to come out. Lemon juice intensity at the back. Very long again Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted: October 2022

Cask sample. Spicy, mealy oak on first impression. Hint of struck match and intense limey fruit. Powerful, concentrated yet already harmonious in youth. Intense and very long. Real grand cru quality.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is fabulous. Bright and effusive, with terrific depth, the 2023 captures all the energy that is typical of the best Charlemagnes. Crushed rocks, mint, sage, chamomile, dried flowers and tangerine oil race across the palate. The Charlemagne is often one of the best wines here, as it is again in 2023. It’s certainly a highlight.

Vinous (92-94)

(harvested on September 12, with potential alcohol of 12.8%; from an east-facing, cool site at the top of the hill, just under the trees, where phenolic maturity usually comes before sugar ripeness): Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Pungent, raw aromas of crushed stone, pepper, truffle and earth: very white soil in character. The impression of rawness continues on the tight, leanish palate, which offers pure flavors of crushed stone, pepper and saline minerality. With less stuffing here than the Montrachet, this penetrating, soil-driven wine comes across as austere. But its lingering perfume suggests that it will reward extended cellaring.

These old vines sit up against the woods on the Ladoix side, so this is typically later in the succession of picking dates chez Prieur. It's hard to find Corton this delectable and charming, especially so young. The vintage shines through beautifully here. The wine blazes with pure yellow fruits, oyster shell and puff pastry. Its delicious, robust core is nicely defined by bracing acidity. 2023-38

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2016 Corton Charlemagne came from a one-year-old barrel (there will also be a new and two-year-old barrel). It has a straightforward, brioche-tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass, with hints of peaches and cream, later gooseberry tart. The palate is well balanced, honeyed in texture with notes of dried apricot, frangipane and a hint of honey. It does not quite deliver the length, but this is undoubtedly a well crafted Corton-Charlemagne from Jean-Michel that will give immense pleasure over the next 10 to 15 years.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from Charlemagne and the Pernand side of the hill, comprises two barrels from the domaine and three barrels from two other sources. It comes across surprisingly closed on the nose. Maybe just going through a dumb phase of élevage? The palate is medium-bodied and much more expressive, gorgeous yellow plum and pithy/peachy notes with a caressing finish. Once the aromatics awaken, this should be a very seductive "CC".

Cask sample. Subtle first impression. Ripe citrus and spice but impressionistic. As it opens, there's a rich creaminess. Rounded and full in the mouth. An unusual combination of gentle intensity.

A small parcel that yields just six barrels. Impressive citrus aromas with a flinty edge, as well as pithy lemons and grapefruit. It delivers a mouthwatering impression of power and clarity. The palate has a very succulent, powerful and refined feel with a stunning, saline mineral cut. Supreme concentration and power. This is great. Organically farmed grapes. Drink or hold through to 2025+.

Decanter (95)

The east-facing climat of Les Languettes supplies all the fruit for this domaine white from Joseph Drouhin, so this is not an over powerful Corton-Charlemagne. Instead, it's built around a core of freshness and minerality with coiled, underlying concentration and stylish, scented 30% new wood. Racy and refined with some (skin) tannic grip.

Part of this cuv e is domaine from Les Languettes and part is purchased from Clos Charlemagne and (again) Les Languettes. All are vinified separately. This starts with a chalky nose before diving into a delightfully concentrated mid-palate. Roasted apples, toasted grains, fresh cream and citrus lift give this complexity and flair. 2023-33

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-96)

From domaine fruit, picked on 26th August. 35% new wood from various forests. A deeper lemon yellow. Plenty of tension on the nose, with a breadth of apple fruit. A slight reductive quality before the oak takes over. A little youthful bitterness. I don’t find it showing at its best today but I suspect that there is more to this to emerge later. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: November 2023.

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)

The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru hails from vines located on the eastern side in the lieu-dit of Les Longuettes. This has a fragrant bouquet with orchard fruit, crushed chalk and white flower notes that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with orange rind and tangerine tones. The vibrant, spicy, lemongrass-laced finish has a seductively waxy texture. This is excellent.
