Burgundy
When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.
At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.
Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.
For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.
In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Fullish yellow. The complex nose shows the power of the vintage, a few drier tannins behind, fair acidity. I think the Clos character is there, but it is reticent today. The 2020 Chablis Vaudésir Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet with orchard fruit, pressed white flowers and light flinty notes, gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is firm with nice acidity and has good weight (more than most Valmurs) with a persistent, classically-styled finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the BIVB tasting in Chablis.Inc. Moutonne is one of Chablis' finest expressions and the 2019 will be another in a long list of memorable vintages. Although not the final bottling, it is clear that there is great power here, combined with finesse and a lightness on its feet. Savoury, umami, notes on the finish. Wood is a little evident now but will integrate beautifully once in bottle for 6-12 months. A lovely example, both powerful and restrained.Inc. VAT£850.84 -

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from Mazoyères, has a fragrant, peppermint-tinged bouquet that is more discreet than others I have tasted. You have to coax the aromas from their shell, touches of violet emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and finely tuned acidity. Quite dense and perhaps requiring a little more delineation and complexity to manifest on the conservative finish. It just needs to turn on the Charmes.Inc. VAT£435.85 -

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is in the Mazoyères area and might be renamed in the not-too-distant future. This has a tightly wound bouquet, the 50% whole bunch nicely integrated. Red berry fruit, cola and light spicy notes unfold in the glass but never fully let go. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, layers of candied red fruit and a modicum of spice, fanning out nicely toward the finish. Very fine.Inc. VAT£776.89 -

The 2016 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Le Grand Maupertui is showing very well from bottle, opening in the glass with intense aromas of wild blueberry, cassis, spicy soil tones, licorice and violet. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with excellent depth and dimension at the core, displaying more concentration and fine-grained structure than the 2017 rendition and concluding with a pure, mineral finish.Inc. The 2017 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru may well be the domaine’s best wine this vintage. It is endowed with more fruit intensity and presence on the nose, offering vigorous raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, superb mineralité and hints of orange blossom developing in the glass. The well-balanced palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and impressive substance and tension toward the finish. An excellent Clos de Vougeot from Anne and Julie Gros.Inc. VAT£1,586.44 -

Exude the sophisticated indulgence of French winemaking with Anne Gros Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Loachausses 2017. Grown in the revered vineyards of Echezeaux, this Grand Cru proves why Anne Gros, a fourth-generation vigneron, is considered a Burgundy master. This particular vineyard found its remarkable individuality and complex expressions through full organic and biodynamic practices, enhancing the provenance of each bottle. The 2017 vintage delivers an intense bouquet of ripe red and black fruit combined with delicate touches of oak and spices. The powerful sensual taste with velvety tannins exhibits an impressive vintage maturity, resulting in an unparalleled luxurious taste, hallmarks of the Anne Gros Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Loachausses 2017 vintage. Indulge in the splendour of Anne Gros Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Loachausses 2018, a sublime classic from Burgundy, crafted by one of the region's highly-respected female winemakers. From the fortified 'Les Loachausses' enclave of Echezeaux, this grand cru exhibits exceptional quality and expert production.
Delicately hand-picked and sorted, Pinot Noir grapes are carefully de-stemmed prior to meticulous fermentation. The resultant wine is then matured in oak barrels for a period, lending signature complexity and depth.
A charming blend of sophistication and nuance, this ruby elixir captivates your palate with red and dark fruits, exuding spiciness, and ending with a lengthy finish. Awarded 93 points by respected Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Anne Gros Echezeaux Grand Cru Les Loachausses 2018 is a harmonious tribute to Anne Gros' winemaking prowess and the region's illustrious terroir. Grown in a single parcel that is 32 years old, this is a winsome Ech zeaux. It's an outpouring of pristine pure red fruits laced with minerality and sprinkled with sweet spices. Outgoing and welcoming, it reminded me of Anne's huge smile. (So often one can see the winemaker in her wine!) The gossamer structure definitely feels rather Vosne-like, even though this second smallest climat sits just about in the heart of Ech zeaux. 2023-36Inc. VAT£1,479.62 -

The 2021 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru is understated and well-defined on the nose: brambly red fruit and crushed stone, touches of pressed flower. Again, this has a transparence that I admire. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, elegant and poised, gently building towards a cohesive, harmonious finish. Nicely poised and whilst not built for long-term ageing, it will dish out mid-term pleasure.Inc. VAT£2,181.89 -

Good medium red. More serious, tangy aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Wonderful sweetness on the palate; really stuffed with fruit and yet less forthcoming today-perhaps more dominated by its structure- than the Clos Vougeot. Finishes long and firm, with a suggestion of medicinal cherry.Inc. VAT£3,531.60 -

Deep red. Sappy aromas of black cherry, clove and chocolate. Rich, full and deep; wonderfully sweet and silky, if not quite as primary as the Clos Vougeot. Spectacular middle-palate fruit and layered texture. Finishes with very refined, sweet tannins and great palate-staining persistence.Inc. VAT£1,043.05 -

Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos Vougeot. Deeper aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, flinty smoky minerality and pepper, along with a whiff of gamey reduction. Bigger, broader and sweeter than the Clos Vougeot, and amazingly supple and plump for a grand cru from this vintage, without any loss of shape. The back end is like a booster rocket of fruits and flowers, which cover the wine's acidity and noble tannins today. I'd love to taste this next to the Clos Vougeot in ten years' time.Inc. The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru reveals a lovely bouquet of Asian spices, plums, raspberries and rose petal, with only subtle hints of the savory nuances of soil and espresso to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with satiny tannins and a broad, open-knit profile. This is a precocious, dramatic Richebourg in the making, and while it will never rival the depth and concentration Gros achieved in 2016 and 2015, it will certainly turn heads in its youth.Inc. The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru was buttoned down when I tasted it, the 100% new oak keeping a lid on the red berry fruit behind this wall. The palate is grippy on the entry with chunky red berry fruit (cranberry, wild strawberry and pomegranate) mixed with white pepper and sage notes towards the stocky finish. The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from vines over 90 years old and is matured entirely in new oak. It has a very pure, seductive bouquet of black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with pressed iris and hints of India ink. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and gentle grip, stiffening a little toward the finish, which just needs a little more flesh to come through.
