Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Medium red, not especially saturated. Alluring lift to the aromas of red berries, minerals and rose petal. Densely packed yet weightless, with the wine's intense rocky character accentuating its youthfully spicy wild berry and floral flavors. Really stunning inner-mouth aromatic character and pungent minerality here. Finishes with outstanding length and perfumed spicy lift. The Georges Noëllat parcel is in the dead center of the appellation and this is indeed a quintessential Grands-Echézeaux with considerable aging potential.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village is the combination of three cuvées wih 35% whole bunch. There was a slight reduction on the nose that maybe exposes the whole bunch a little more, but there is so much freshness and vitality still present. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, just a faint almost dark chocolate like note in the background that will be assimilated by the time of bottling. Fine length. Delicious.

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Clos de La Bussière 1er Cru, which includes 55% whole bunch, has a transparent and distinctly marine-influenced, oyster-shell tinged bouquet. It is a little more floral than previous vintages – delicate, even. The palate is medium-bodied with a quite saline, lightly spiced entry. Touches of white pepper and clove develop toward the finish of what is a superior Clos de la Bussière to the 2018. Very promising.

Two parcels sitting next to one another on the northern side and up the slope go into this wine. One is the domaine's and the other is purchased. They total a mere 0.13 hectares. Still, the Drouhins only began combining the cuv es about ten years ago. This is a gorgeous Clos de B ze with intense blackberry and black plum fruit, smoky minerality and salted chocolate. Finely toned and muscular – like a ballet dancer, not a rugby player, this has sculpted tannins and lively acidity. The last notes feel like taffeta on the palate. 2025-42

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is more backward than the Griotte, almost introspective with dark berry fruit, tobacco and tertiary scents. Just a touch of spice emerges with time. A group of Drouhin’s Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses was beautiful. I thought the 1985 was the most complete of the wines. It showed elements of sweet, ethereal fruit and pretty tertiary nuances. The 1990 was an especially delicate Les Amoureuses, with notable purity and inner sweetness, although it faded a bit in the glass. The 1978 Les Amoureuses offered up sweet scents of tobacco, autumn leaves and herbs. Here the fruit was a touch faded, and the wine came across as slightly dry on the finish. Chef Troisgros’s pigeon dish was absolutely divine, even if it was perhaps a touch too rich for these delicate Burgundies.

The Jerome Chezeaux Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2015 presents refined raspberry and sweet cherry aromatics, complemented by spice nuances and refined earthy undertones. With integration, sophistication and superb tannic structure it exhibits Burgundy’s famed longevity.

Experience a masterclass in French viticulture with Jerome Chezeaux Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2015, a testament to the genius of traditional Burgundy winemaking.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is more backward than the Griotte, almost introspective with dark berry fruit, tobacco and tertiary scents. Just a touch of spice emerges with time. The palate displays very fine structure, good backbone, quite peppery towards the finish with a long tail. Whilst not as gregarious as the Griotte, this has a simmering intensity that I appreciate.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from contracted fruit sourced from the lieu-dit of Aux Charmes. Deep and noticeably limpid in color, it has a gorgeous, pure and sensual bouquet that shows more composure than the Corton Grand Cru. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and more backbone than the Corton. The lively, spicy, black pepper-tinged finish lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)

Almost black in the centre, rather un-Drouhin like. Very powerful, with liquorice and black fruit, firm tannins, this is a little bit on the muscular side, showing the more aggressive side of 2020 today. Tasted: November 2021

Vinous (93)

The 1996 Musigny Grand Cru has an enticing, well-defined bouquet of dark berries, iris flower, dried blood and pine needle scents, opening nicely with aeration. Medium-bodied and, like many 1996s, quite backward and burly in style; a masculine Musigny with traces of freshly rolled tobacco on the finish. Moderate length. This has clearly got legs, though where is it going to go? Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London.
