Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, which was two-third whole-cluster fruit, has a well-defined bouquet with very fine mineralité. These aromatics just speak of class. Our last Burgundy of the night was served blind. It was an explosive, ripe wine packed with an impressively dense core of fruit framed by new oak. It turned out to be the 2001 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche, a wine that is perhaps 15 years away from being ready to drink. Needless to say it was an incredible privilege to catch this wine at this relatively early stage.

Even at 14 years of age, the 2001 remains virile and imposing, which is quite rare as Romanée-Conti is so often an elusive, more sensual wine. The 2001, on the other hand, is a wine of transparency and energy, two of the signatures of the 2001s here, yet the aromas and flavors remain a bit on the dark side. Although the 2001 is strikingly beautiful today, it will only improve and transform over time, as this tasting amply shows.

The 2013 Echézeaux is one of the most open, expressive wines in the range today. Silky tannins and a pliant, resonant mid-palate convey an impression of suppleness that is unusual, even for Echézeaux. That theme continues through to a beautifully sculpted, generous finish. I expect the 2013 will drink well relatively early for a Grand Cru.

Wine Advocate (97)

The Dujac 2006 Romanee St.-Vivant is extraordinarily perfumed by black raspberry, lily, honeysuckle, narcissus, ginger, star anise, and fennel pollen, all of which are complimented rather than contradicted by a bit of sweet new woodiness. (Seysses says his toasting instructions for these barrels – there were only two of Romanee St.-Vivant this year; half a barrique less than in 2005 – were misunderstood, with the result that it wasn't quite deep enough and there is a bit of superficial coconut aroma, about which, he adds, I am not concerned long-term.) A musky sense of liquid floral perfume and liqueur-like essence of spiced black fruits and Pinot carnality inform the rich, dense palate of this exceptional, almost endlessly lingering elixir which simultaneously marries near-implosive concentration with animation, elegance, and sheer refreshment. You could – perhaps, should, were you to be lucky enough to acquire some – spend an entire evening savoring this, not to mention the next 12-15 years smugly savoring the knowledge that some exists in your cellar.

This is an effortless, gracious Burgundy of the highest level. The 2009 character comes through in spades, but there is something about the Romanée St. Vivant that transcends vintage. Bright medium red. Rather cool nose offers scents of black cherry, dark raspberry, menthol, licorice, black pepper, caraway seed, crushed herbs and spices. Surprisingly smooth and fine-grained on entry, with its almost velvety texture enlivened by notes of fresh herbs, licorice, dried flowers and medicinal black cherry. Offers an attractive combination of subtle sweetness and salinity, conveying clear if subtle soil tones; more black fruits than red. Ultimately a midweight for this bottling. This may not possess quite the density or sweetness to buffer its dusty tannins, at least in the early going, but it's very young and still imploded, and displays considerable power for the vintage. From a very late harvest, beginning on October 2. (13.15% alcohol; 3.4 pH; 3.7 g/l acidity; 41 h/h yield)

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, just a little oak to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with (again), quite an oaky entry, pastille-like with fine tannins. Maybe it is missing a little tension on the finish, otherwise, this represents a very decent and quite delicious 2018 Nuit Saint-Georges. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru, aged in 50% new oak, has an intense bouquet of floral and violet aromas joined by dark berry fruit and a touch of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied and quite mineral-driven, with gentle grip and a savory, earthy, quite broody finish. This should be fascinating to watch evolve in bottle.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru has a very lovely bouquet with well-defined red fruit, crushed stone, touches of dried red petals. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh opening, a Boudots surfeit with energy, quite conservative and linear on the finish though. Great potential.

Cheurlin's 2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru is showing beautifully from bottle, bursting with aromas of cherries, cassis, rose petals, spices and orange rind, deftly framed by classy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and succulent, built around powdery tannins and a fragrant core of ripe but lively fruit.

Vinous (92-94)

Matured in 50% new oak, the 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a complex bouquet of red currant, crushed strawberry, licorice and light floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and lightly spiced with touches of cracked black pepper toward the grainy finish. More masculine than other Vosne cuvées, it will require 4–5 years to show its best.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru is fully de-stemmed and matured in 75% new oak. It has a very pure, floral bouquet of black cherries, cassis and crushed violet scents on the nose, becoming more and more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, sorbet-fresh from the start and culminating in an intense, almost vitamin-like finish. Excellent.

Vinous (90)

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru has a rather acetic nose driven by soy-like aromas that shade the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity and nice balance, but sadly, it feels dry toward the grippy finish. Its evolution is difficult to foresee. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
