Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny is a great introduction to the year. Dark cherries, plums and spices jump from the glass in a sensual, expressive Chambolle with tons of near-term appeal. Violets, rose petals and spices all flesh out on the radiant, expressive finish. The 2012 is a bit richer and broader than is normally the case, but there is plenty of vibrancy to balance the intensity of the fruit.

Barthod's beautiful 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village reveals an inviting bouquet of raspberries, red cherries, blood orange and espresso roast, subtly framed by classy new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and succulent, with a fleshy core of fruit, tangy acids and fine but chalky structuring tannins.

Exquisite in craft, the Glantenay Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 2019 is a velvety embodiment of the finest Pinot Noir from Burgundy's celebrated Côte de Nuits. Artfully crafted by Domaine Glantenay, a family winery esteemed since the 17th century, this premier cru casts a vivid spectacle of both tradition and mastery.

Harvested manually, the grapes are immediately de-stemmed to preserve integrity. A cold pre-fermentation extract of subtle hues yields a spicy, black cherry laced charm. Raised for 16 months in French oak barrels with 50% new wood, the vibrant ruby robe of this stellar vintage conceals a complex bouquet of violets, currants, and delicate forest floor undertones.

The Glantenay Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 2019 affords discerning oenophiles a harmonious balance of silky tannins and fresh acidity, culminating in a lingering finish. Its profound elegance exemplifies the depth and versatility of Domaine Glantenay's virtuosity.

50% whole bunch vinification, 25% new wood. First to be picked. Pretty ruby-purple colour. The nose here has the elegance and charm of Chambolle with the lifted fresher qualities of the whole bunches. Fresh raspberry and alpine strawberry, avoids the herbaceous note to be found in Clos Village, and has good acidity, refined tannins and fine length. Well made and enticing. Tasted: December 2021

Aromas of cherries, sweet wild berries, peonies, blood orange and sweet soil tones introduce the 2018 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Baudes, a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine with a textural attack that segues into a layered, vibrant mid-palate and finish. From a small parcel near Bonnes-Mares, this is routinely one of Lignier's finest premier cru bottlings, and the 2018 is no exception.

The holding is in the angle at the northern end of the vineyard, where Laurent has had a nice little wall in dry stone built. Dark black colour with light purple rim. As ever, this is much more Morey than Chambolle. Rich deep dark fruit with its typical savoury edge, dark raspberry notes, a little plum, flavours which reach far to the back of the palate. Succulent and savoury together and very persistent. 13.25% alcohol. Tasted: November 2021

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Les Bussières includes a small proportion of whole bunch fruit. It has a harmonious bouquet with red cherries and pomegranate aromas. I appreciate the definition and precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and crunchy red berry fruit, very natural in style, pure and tensile with a dash of spice on the finish. This should give ten years of pleasure, possibly more.

(from purchased fruit from the lieux-dits Les Drazey and Les Gamaires; Lignier does the vineyard work): Bright medium red. Urgent aromas of cranberry and fresh strawberry accented by crushed stone. Juicy, spicy and pure, conveying a touch of rocky minerality and good minty lift to its red berry flavors. Finishes with a firm spine of tannins. I might have identified this very firm village wine blind as a 2014.

(the only one of these 2013s that had been racked and assembled by the time of my visit, as it had been very reduced): Good deep red. Pure but reticent aromas of red fruits and menthol. Silky on entry, then supple and energetic in the mid-palate, with pristine red fruit flavors supported by a stony underpinning. Finishes saline and persistent, with its 50% new oak showing today. Oxygen has done wonders for this wine, noted van Canneyt, adding that the rest of the 2013s need air. He planned to rack them into cuves not long after my visit and bottle in January.
