Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru demands a little coaxing from the glass, with dark cherries, raspberry preserve and briary aromas, gradually unfurling but never fully letting go like the Chapelle-Chambertin. The palate is very well structured with a firm backbone, quite Mazoyères-like in style, the mineralité flooding out towards the second half that displays an insistent grip and impressive length. Excellent.

(14.4% alcohol, with a pH of 3.9) Ruby-red. Very southern aromas of chocolate liqueur and garrigue: this could be Chateauneuf. Lush, sweet and hugely rich, with powerful, roasted dark fruit and smoke flavors. Finishes with substantial but very ripe tannins. A rather extreme and outsized wine: I never would have picked it as Gevrey-Chambertin, much less Charmes.

A vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish. The 2021 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from vines located in Mazoyères, has a splendid bouquet with blackberry, white tipped strawberry and light earthy scents that gradually unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine, sorbet-fresh entry, cassis and blackberry that frame a finely tuned and quite powerful finish. Collardot mentioned that he was bestowed by the full complement of 6 barrels this year and this wine seems to be celebrating that fact!

The fine deep colour goes without saying. Immediate raspberry and strawberry fruit thrusts itself to the front. Fresh dark berries, less explosive than Clos Vougeot, all tightly wound with an impressive intensity. This is going to be a beautiful bottle in due course, with a lovely, fine, summer pudding aftertaste. Drink from 2030-2038.

(from Mazoyères-Chambertin; vinified with 80% whole clusters): Bright red. Reticent aromas of black cherry and licorice. Uncompromisingly dry on the palate but with noteworthy juicy intensity to the flavors of dark fruits and dried flowers. Not a particularly pliant or fleshy style--in fact a bit tough in the early going--but its rising perfume suggests that it will reward cellaring. Today the dusty tannins are accentuated by the influence of the stems, which limits the wine's sweetness.

Exquisitely balanced with just 13.2% natural alcohol, Bachelet's 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes has realized all the promise it showed in barrel, wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, plums, orange rind, raw coca, woodsmoke and rich, loamy soil. This takes its time to open, revealing wild strawberry and black cherry scents entwined with hints of graphite and crushed stone. Medium red. Strawberry liqueur, dried rose and peppery herbs on the nose. Silky in texture but a bit backward and medicinal, even rustic, offering cranberry, spice and herb flavors and a slight peppery greenness. I find this a bit herbal and shallow for grand cru. Needs time but will it blossom and fill out? Nicely delineated and aromatic but lacks the depth and full ripeness of the best wines here in 2014. This parcel located just below Chambertin is part of Faiveley's acquisition of Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot in late 2013.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a single hectare that came from Faiveley’s purchase of Dupont-Tisserandot. The parcels lie right across the road from Chambertin, and the vines are around 70 years old, although they were due to be pulled up the week after my visit, since they are becoming unproductive. This has a slightly smudged, floral bouquet that gains clarity with aeration, but does not quite have the delineation of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and good grip, quite Mazoyères-like in terms of structure, and an attractive spicy finish. It maybe just lacks the finesse of the very finest Charmes-Chambertins.

Good deep red. Strawberry, flowers, pepper and pencil lead on the nose. Silky on the palate but a bit tighter than the Combottes, with enticing balance. The peppery nuance carries through in the mouth. Here the tannins are noticeable, though, even a tad dry. This may get a fining, says Jeremy.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-90)

Good deep red. Strawberry, flowers, pepper and pencil lead on the nose. Silky on the palate but a bit tighter than the Combottes, with enticing balance. The peppery nuance carries through in the mouth. Here the tannins are noticeable, though, even a tad dry. This may get a fining, says Jeremy.

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, bursting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, orange rind, spices, black truffle, espresso roast and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and mouthfilling, with a layered and nicely concentrated core, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an airy and generous bouquet with lifted black fruit, hoisin and light roasted chestnut aromas, all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a beautiful line of acidity, svelte and harmonious with a slightly grainy-textured finish. I adore the discrete crescendo in this Grand Cru and the unimposing but long aftertaste. "It’s been growing in stature over the last 10 to 15 years," remarked Alex Seysses. Proof of that is evident by tasting this superb Charmes-Chambertin.
