Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2016 Charmes Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has a generous bouquet with perfumed red cherries, crushed strawberry and cranberry scents laced with Chinese five spice and crushed flower petal aromas. I appreciate the focus and elegance here. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe red berry fruit, extremely well balanced and restrained (not unlike Denis Bachelet's that I tasted in my prior visit). The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, which comes from Perrot-Minot’s own vineyard, is a bit sullen on the nose compared to the Griottes. It never quite obtains the same amplitude, feels a little timid, a Charmes that doesn’t charm at the moment probably due to a bit of reduction. Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Mazoyères side, with the vines averaging 60 years of age. I much prefer the bouquet here compared to the Echézeaux: well defined with good mineral tones, redcurrant and cranberry fruit with hints of undergrowth and even a tang of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite structured for a Charmes-Chambertin with a solid, quite grippy finish that needs to muster a little more charm by the finish. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle.

The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from 0.57 hectares of 32-year-old vine, is attired in a perfumed ferrous bouquet that is broody at the moment and perhaps needs another year to open up. Lavish and expressive, the 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Cuvée des Merles bursts from the glass with a fruit-driven bouquet of ripe cherries, licorice, spices and sweet soil that is typical of this vineyard. Full-bodied, satiny and expansive, the wine's fine structuring tannins are entirely cloaked in succulent fruit. The finish displays good length and delineation. Of all Ponsot's grands crus, this will be the best bet for near-term consumption.

Deep red-ruby. Black cherry and dark berries on the backward nose. Concentrated and densely packed, with dark fruit and saline mineral flavors conveying an impression of brooding power. Much tighter and more masculine than the showy 2014 version, but these tannins are ripe and sweet. The juicy finish displays lovely lift and length. Excellent aging potential here.

  • Rene Bouvier Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

(true Charmes): Deep, bright red. Dark berries, licorice and violet on the perfumed nose, with a hint of exotic oak. Sappy, chewy and concentrated, showing excellent energy and a weighless impression to the flavors of dark berries, flowers and saline minerality. • Taupenot Merme Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (89)

The 2011 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from 0.57 hectares of 32-year-old vine, is attired in a perfumed ferrous bouquet that is broody at the moment and perhaps needs another year to open up. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, though it seems foursquare and shows slight attenuation toward the finish. It actually showed better when re-tasted a month later at the domaine when it exhibited finer precision. Drink 2014-2020.

Romain Taupenot has not been afraid to make ageworthy wines in 2012, but they aren't overly tannic or woody, just structured and well balanced. This is a case in point: a subtly oaked Grand Cru with real drive and precision. The fruit is sweet and supple, but it's surrounded by fine-grained tannins and mineral freshness.

The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since in barrel. It has blossomed on the nose with charming redcurrant, Morello and tertiary scents, a subtle damp moss and undergrowth aroma gradually becoming more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a palpable sense of energy and impressive precision towards the finish that leaves the mouth tingling with glee afterwards. Impressive and this comes highly recommended. Tasted at Flint Wines’ Taupenot-Merme retrospective.

The 2015 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has an expressive bouquet with redcurrant, raspberry coulis, a touch of honey and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. It opens nicely in the glass, though does not slip into fifth gear at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, cohesive in the mouth and quite saline and spicy. There is generosity here, a trait of Charmes-Chambertin, with the mineral core surfacing right at the finish as it fans out. This is an impressive follow-up to the superb 2014 and it should give 20+ years of pleasure.

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a straightforward, focused bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary and tea leaf aromas, though it just lacks the assertiveness and intensity you seek from a Grand Cru. The palate is better with a light spiced opening, good weight and cohesion with black pepper and sea salt infused red fruit. Quite Mazoyères in terms of structure towards the finish, this will benefit from 4-6 years in bottle.

Initially there was a touch of reduction so be sure to decant this. With a few minutes of air pretty aromas of complex and cool red pinot fruit, earth and a hint of humus give way to equally earthy medium weight flavors that possess good volume and a fine muscularity, all wrapped in a very firm but not aggressive finish. This understated effort should be lovely in a few years.
