Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

  • Joseph Voillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru les Champans is more closed than its Volnay cousins at the moment, although there is certainly plenty of tensile fruit here, more black than red, with hints of orange rind and fig coming through with aeration. The palate is very refined, wonderfully poised with a keen line of acidity, adorned with wonderful symmetry towards the finish. This is just superb - a sophisticated Champans for long-term ageing.

    Vinous (93+)

The 2016 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and touches of sage and thyme. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and crescendoing gently to a slightly meaty, delineated, long finish. I suspect this might close down for a few years, but there is huge potential here.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru les Fremiets, reduced to seven barrels this year (40% one- or two-year-old oak), offers attractive, pure, raspberry and crushed strawberry scents on the nose, floral scents (rose petals) sneaking out from under the coves with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, lithe tannin. I adore the harmony and precision of this Fremiets, not a powerful or flamboyant Volnay, but just Pinot Noir shimmering on the tongue. This comes highly recommended for those that appreciate classic Volnay.

It has a feisty, high-toned bouquet of red currant, kirsch and orange zest aromas, hints of blue fruit emerging with aeration. Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. There is quite a lot of reduction on the nose of the Volnay Clos de la Bousse d'Or, but underneath is some quite decent redcurrant and fresh strawberry fruit that gradually unfurls in the glass. There is still some oak here to be resolved, but there is sufficient substance here to suggest that patience is all that is needed. The palate is medium-bodied and fleshy on the opening. Leading with a champignon-like note I would more have expected from Champans or other sites further north in this commune, Leroy’s 2007 Volnay Santenots du Milieu brims as well with red currant and cherry. Less refined in texture or refreshing (despite a tart fruit skin edge) than most Pinots in the present collection, it finishes with decisive chalkiness and persistent ripe fruit, but it isn’t clear to me that its faintly gum-numbing sense of tannic firmness will translate into longevity. Here’s one Leroy 2007 I would approach the same way as so many others of its vintage, namely to cellar for at most a few years, watchfully and recognizing that the wine might of course make a fool of me.

The Santenots is endowed with serious palate intensity and gravitas from start to finish. Scents of smoke, licorice and exotic spices round things out in style. The 2014 Santenots is a big wine within the context of Volnay, and yet all the elements are deftly balanced. Lalou Bize-Leroy reports that there was quite a bit of hail in 2014. And the wine? • Leroy Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu 2014 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

One of the highlights in this lineup, the 2014 Volnay Santenots du Milieu is a total knock-out. Soaring aromatics lead into a core of dark-toned fruit in a powerful, brooding Volnay. It is superb. It's as simple as that.

  • Louis Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru immediately hits a level up from Les Angles, offering scents of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and a hint of morels, all delineated and focused. There is much more brightness and energy on the palate of black plum, raspberry and allspice, leading to a nicely structured, quite peppery finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent.

  • Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92+)

From the southern side of this large premier cru, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Maison Louis Jadot) offers up appealing aromas of plums, pomegranate, espresso roast, raw cocoa and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with good depth and concentration and a broad-shouldered chassis of fine but chalky tannin. This looks promising.

  • Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 2020 (6x75cl)

    Tim Atkin MW (94)

Densely flavorful on the palate, there are mulberries, cherry pits, grilled hazelnuts and a touch of underbrush. The fine-boned tannins chisel the rounded, medium-bodied palate before the perky acidity floods the nicely detailed finish. 2023-28

  • Louis Jadot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a very attractive, pure bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, wilted rose petal and a touch of undergrowth that becomes increasingly floral with aeration. Impressive delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins. Sensual and supple, there are no hard edges here, and the finish seems to glide. This will be tempting young, but it has the substance to age.

  • Louis Jadot Volnay 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (86-88)

The 2018 Volnay Village has a strong potpourri/lavender bouquet that rather overrides the terroir expression. The palate is sweet and chewy on the entry, balanced and clean, but just missing a bit of charm and personality.

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)

This vineyard is worked by horse. 20% whole bunch vinification, 30% new wood. Dark purple with a little reduction. There is fine potential here too, in a liquid dark raspberry style, long on the palate, some sun dried cherries, but without the alcohol and excess of 2020. Good wine. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: December 2023.
