Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Dark red-ruby. Good mineral lift to the aromas of red berries, tobacco and cardamom. Bright, fine-grained wine with moderate depth and sweetness but lovely inner-mouth floral lift to its raspberry and stone flavors. Still a bit compressed but this may be gaining in richness. The firmly tannic finish offers good persistence.

A very pretty and airy nose features notes of red cherry, raspberry and spice with a shading of soft wood and earth. On the palate though this is not nearly as concentrated though there is still perfectly good concentration and a sleek muscularity on the vibrant, detailed and lingering finish. While this is by no means light, it is a Charmes built more along the lines of finesse than power.

(fairly late malo here): Aromas of pear, green apple, menthol, mint leaf and rosemary, complicated by warm southern herbs. Very rich, even opulent wine with noteworthy sucrosité and lowish acidity. This very tactile, smooth wine boasts excellent breadth without any rough edges. Finishes quite dry and rich, with palate-staining length and an emerging impression of lemon drop acidity.

Vinous (92-94)

(destemmed): Bright, full ruby. Deep, almost liqueur-like aromas of cassis and black cherry; there's something old school about this. Hugely concentrated and mouthfilling, with its very ripe flavors of cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate and violet complicated by saline minerality. Finishes dense, saline, floral and very long, with big but utterly smooth tannins that reach the incisors. This is a major mouthful of wine already but it will need time to lose some baby fat. With its slightly high-toned character and impression of fat, this wine struck me as rather 2015-like.

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot was reduced from sixty to twenty-six barrels because of the frost. Often cited as one of the domaine’s best crus, it boasts one of the most intense aromatics from the domaine this year with scents of white peach, walnut oil, linseed and just a slight petrol-like aroma in the background. The palate is well balanced but certainly rich and powerful, sporting an almost viscous texture and a gorgeous, honeyed finish that caresses the mouth. I love the depth and drive of this Virondot, a great success for winemaker Sabine Morey in a challenging vintage.

Vinous (95)

Bright, deep red. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the young 2017, offering aromas of cherry, blueberry, menthol and licorice and an impression of medicinal reserve. A juicy, spicy, impeccably balanced midweight with outstanding clarity and cut and an enticing touch of sweetness leavened by spiciness. Plenty of tannin/acid spine here to frame and carry the fruit through a long, rising, floral finish. This tightly wound beauty shows the sappy quality of the vintage's better examples and should be long-lived. It would be a shame not to give it at least four or five more years of cellaring, if not eight or ten. (13.05% alcohol; September 25 harvest; 45 h/h; 3.39 pH; from what Guillaume d'Angerville described as a good crop, as this vintage escaped the frost, whose effects, he said, did not extend higher than 260 meters: Clos des Ducs is 300 to 325 meters above sea level, with very good air flow to dissipate frost)

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets is also showing very well, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of dark berries, raw cocoa, orange rind, forest floor and dried flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, having come together beautifully since I tasted it from barrel, framed by juicy acids and fine, stony tannins. It's a superb wine that confirms the serious stature of this vintage chez d'Angerville.

The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru was not touched by the frost this season. It has a very composed and well-defined bouquet with vibrant red and black fruit. I like the focus and cohesion here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but fine tannin, finely structured and precise with great purity and superb freshness on the finish. This has 10% stems, but you cannot tell at all, and you are left with the impression that this is really a top-notch Echézeaux that is destined to give 15 to 20 years pleasure (if allowed).

Bright, dark red-ruby. Heady aromas of black fruits, tart cherry stomp, licorice and violet. Wonderfully plush and fine-grained but medicinal and backward, with its flavors of black fruits, flowers and spices accented by pungent minerality. Very densely packed but even more imploded than the Cros Parantoux and more difficult to taste today. A wine with outstanding intensity and focus, as well as the medicinal reserve for a long evolution in the cellar. Firm tannins are perfectly buffered by strong material.

Vinous (95-97)

(alcohol close to 14%): Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of black raspberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and pungent crushed-stone minerality. Boasts alluring sweetness and sexy inner-mouth perfume, with its intense dark fruit and mineral flavors enlivened by brisk acidity. Not quite as salty as the Brûlées but still boasts terrific inner-mouth tension and energy. Still a bit youthfully tight--and less charming than the Brûlées--but not at all hard. The tannins reach the front teeth. Méo harvested this fruit later than the Brûlées, and this wine will need more bottle aging for its structure to soften. A great premier cru in the making.

Saturated ruby-red. Aromatic and very pure but restrained on the nose, offering high-pitched aromas of dark raspberry, black cherry, flowers, spices and minerals. Impressively concentrated and dense yet light on its feet, with its very intense flavors of dark fruits, spices and flowers enlivened by saline tension. Almost painful in the middle palate in the early going, this wine finishes with firm but suave tannins and outstanding lingering perfume. Méo did not add SO2 in the fermenter because this wine often has reduction issues. With its fruit of steel, this beauty should enjoy a long life in bottle.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets lost half its crop due to frost damage, something that even Michel Lafarge himself could not remember over decades of winemaking. It has a drop dead gorgeous bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, so effervescent with hints of blood orange and freshly sliced tangerines. Underneath all that is wonderful mineralité. The palate is very well balanced with a pitch perfect opening, tensile from the very start with layers of tart red fruit, just a subtle savory note surfacing toward the finish. Half as much but almost as good as the brilliant 2015 Caillerets.

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures comes from chalky soils strewn with small stones, and like last year, it will be only bottled in magnum. It has plenty of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit on the nose, lively and pretty, just a subtle black olive note developing in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with succulent ripe tannin, well structured with a sorbet-like freshness, the finish offering blood orange and tangerine among the red berry fruit. Superb. Vinous (91-93)

Moderately saturated medium red. Doesn't show quite the lift of the Goulots or Cazetiers on the nose, offering deeper-pitched aromas of red fruits, earth and licorice. Then surprisingly sappy in the mouth, with its red fruit flavors complicated by exotic spices and lifted by a floral element. This wine struck me as a bit less primary than the Cazetiers and Goulots but it's lively nevertheless. A dry, classic style, from vines planted in the 1950s.

(just four barrels produced; my sample was a blend of all of them): Dark red-ruby color. Very deep aromas of black cherry and crushed dark raspberry lifted by subtle treble notes of white pepper and flowers. Densely packed and wonderfully velvety and full; perhaps a bit less refined than the Ruchottes due to the smaller crop and impression of chewy extract, but this wine boasts terrific definition, not to mention suave, fully ripe tannins for Clos Vougeot. Finishes lively, subtle and very long, with building richness. This fruit was harvested at 12.9% potential alcohol and the wine should age for a long time on its sheer strength of material. Splendid.

The tannins reach the front teeth. Méo harvested this fruit later than the Brûlées, and this wine will need more bottle aging for its structure to soften. A great premier cru in the making.

Vinous (94-97)

Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Clos des Reas has one of the most ebullient and vivacious bouquets from Michel Gros this year with red cherries, wild strawberries and a touch of blood orange in the mix. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin, crisp acidity, plentiful tart red fruit with a fine structure that does not dominate toward the finish. Excellent.

Vinous (88-90)

(not frosted but the yield was just 20 hectoliters per hectare): Good medium red. Sexy scents of red berries, plum and spices complicated by leather and earth nuances. Supple, fine-grained and sweet if not yet delivering the complexity promised by the nose. This midweight finishes with a fine dusting of tannins.

Wine Advocate (92-94)

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures comes from chalky soils strewn with small stones, and like last year, it will be only bottled in magnum. It has plenty of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit on the nose, lively and pretty, just a subtle black olive note developing in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with succulent ripe tannin, well structured with a sorbet-like freshness, the finish offering blood orange and tangerine among the red berry fruit. Superb. Grab one of those mags.

Vinous (88)

Aromas of yellow fruits and spicy oak, plus a whiff of caramel. Reasonably intense wine with yellow fruit and spice flavors supported by ripe acidity and lifted by a mineral element. Not particularly nuanced but not short on energy. About half of this wine comes from hillside vines, the other half from the bottom of the hill on gravelly soil.

Wine Advocate (93+)

The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru is a success, unwinding in the glass with a youthfully reserved bouquet of cherries, cassis, candied peel and incense, framed by some spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and powerful, with satiny tannins, an ample core of fruit, succulent acids and a long, oak-inflected but persistent finish. This shows considerable promise.

The 2016 Vougeot 1er Cru Les Cras opens in the glass with notes of smoky cassis, raspberries, espresso roast and spices, framed by toasty oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and supple, with a vivid core of fruit, racy acids and fine but youthfully chewy tannins, concluding with a penetrating and oak-inflected finish. This is a success in its somewhat old-fashioned style and will reward bottle age.

Vinous (93-95)

Splendid.

Vinous (93-95)

(from the estate's two parcels in Les Rouges du Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits, both of them frosted in 2016; just 17 hectoliters per hectare produced): Deep ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, licorice and flowers, plus a note of black pepper. Offers incredible concentration to its flavors of blackberry syrup and savory minerality, conveying an almost liqueur-like ripeness for a dry wine. Painfully intense in the early going but the big tannins are buffered by the wine's impression of extract. This wine will need extended cellaring to absorb its penetrating saline minerality. I can understand why Marie-Christine Mugneret presented this wine last.
