Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. Tasted at Domaine Duroché.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of a parcel from the north of the village of Gevrey, a parcel in Aux Etelois that is not selected for that cuvée, and fruit from Pressonnnier. It felt open on the nose with raspberry preserve and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is nicely balanced, bright and pretty in the mouth with a keen line of acidity, then battening down the hatches toward the tightly coiled finish that will open by the time of bottling. There is good potential here, but it will require a couple of years in bottle.

Subtle aromas of white peach, apple, spices and leesy hazelnut. Silkier and more elegant than the Hameau de Blagny, offering a lighter touch and more nervosité. A floral element adds lift. Finishes smooth and long, with subtle fruit intensity and very good cut.

The 2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrières did not quite display the panache of the enticing Les Referts, though it is redeemed by a subtle touch of aniseed, a leitmotif among several other whites within the Côte de Beaune. The palate is very well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, crisp and taut, perhaps less showy and complex than the Les Referts, although there is plenty of freshness on the finish. If you want a strict, no-frills, straight-onto-the-fairway Puligny, this is where to come.

Pale, slightly green-tinged color. Moderately ripe nose suggests menthol and white pepper, plus an herbal element. Offers good texture and a touch of sweetness but not the purity of the better '16s at this address. With its juxtaposition of a marzipan hint and underlying minerality, this village wine comes across as a bit disjointed in the early going.

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is the standout wine for Domaine d'Eugenie this year. It was cropped at 16 hectoliters per hectare (compared to 38 hectoliters per hectare in 2017). It easily is blessed with the finest aromatics from the domaine: red and black fruit, fine mineralité with just a hint of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, a fine bead of acidity—real personality here, with a very pure and tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I like the way it just keeps rolling across the senses. This is extremely sophisticated and full of breeding.

Bright, dark red-ruby. Knockout sappy nose combines black raspberry, crushed rock and white pepper. Boasts remarkable intensity and clarity--not to mention class--to its flavors of raspberry, spices and pungent minerals. Wonderfully sappy and dense but almost magically light on its feet. This sharply delineated wine finishes with ineffable rising perfume and outstanding length. This wine manages to combine the best traits of Faiveley's other Gevrey grand crus--not to mention the finest qualities of the 2016 vintage--in an utterly weightless package.

The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Les Ouvrées Rodin is showing brilliantly from bottle, unfurling in the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, cherries, red berries, grilled game, licorice, spices and smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and expansive, with a deep and intense core of sapid fruit that cloaks its satiny but abundant structuring tannins, underpinned by succulent acids and concluding with a seriously long, penetrating finish. This special cuvée hails from a parcel of vines planted in 1966 on the Chambertin side of Clos de Bèze, and its name commemorates a Faiveley family connection with the sculptor Rodin.

(more than 50% of the potential crop was lost to frost; vinified in a new 3.5-hectoliter barrel with 50% whole clusters; one-third of these vines were planted in 2010): Bright, saturated medium red. Knockout perfume of cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry and white pepper. Vividly high-pitched and fine-grained in the mouth, with its penetrating, floral red fruit flavors accented by pungent crushed-stone minerality. Delivers outstanding intensity without weight, not to mention superb inner-mouth tension and saline complexity. This fabulously perfumed wine finishes with terrific rising length. This wine may not have the volume or power of the Combe d'Orveau but I suspect it will dance on its sibling's grave.

Bright ruby. Fruit-driven aromas of crushed black cherry and dark raspberry convey outstanding pungent lift. Incredibly concentrated, sappy and primary, conveying outstanding juicy purity and compelling thickness to its dark fruit and violet flavors. At once hugely powerful and utterly seamless, this wine finishes with great spicy length and lift. A real essence of Burgundy--and likely to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines offers up a delicate bouquet of wild berries, cassis, coniferous forest floor and candied peel. (due to the tiny crop in 2016, Faiveley blended its two plots to make three-quarters of a barrel of wine; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red-ruby. Musky, smoky, reduced nose. Then wonderfully silky and rich on the palate, with its flavors of dark chocolate, black tea and cocoa powder conveying a powerful terroir character. Today the wine's fruit is in the deep background, yet this smoky, chocolatey Musigny conveys great breed. Not a wine, but a tasting experience for the connoisseur, says Jérôme Flous. Today I prefer the two Clos de Bèze cuvées and the Clos des Cortons for their pure fruit intensity. (Incidentally the 2015 Musigny Joseph Faiveley, made from Faiveley's recent purchase of a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family, was bottled in magnums.)

Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porêts-Saint-Georges is one of Faiveley's most brooding and reserved wines this year, unfurling in the glass with notes of earthy black cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, grilled game bird and rich spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a tight-knit core, an abundance of fine but firm structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. If opened today, this Nuits is better on day two or three, and while it's excellent, it will demand more patience than pretty much any other cuvée in the range.

A ripe and brooding nose offers up notes of both red and dark currant, raspberry and a really lovely array of floral elements. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is at once finer and more delineated though notably less concentrated and powerful while the lingering and equally firmly structured finish possesses a different texture as the 100% whole cluster vinification is more obvious. Good stuff here as well in a built-to-age style.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Lavrottes is located in the north of the appellation that was less affected by the frost, so this was cropped at around 25 hectoliters per hectare. It was harvested toward the end of the harvest to gain concentration, includes 30% whole-bunch fruit and was raised in 50% new oak. I like the nose. Gentle at first, then opening its arms and revealing lovely redcurrant, cranberry and crushed strawberry aromas tinged with gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin, a fine bead of acidity and good structure—you can feel this gripping the mouth so that the saline finish is almost like a Morey-Saint-Denis. This is a great wine and it should provide longevity if you swing that way.

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Clos le Village lost 40% of the production, less than others due to the protection of the church that lies in close proximity. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a clean and pure bouquet with Morello cherries, raspberry preserve and a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, the oak nicely integrated here and with good substance on the finish for a village cru. Merci à l'église!

(13.3 alcohol; 40% vendange entier; 80% new oak; no frost): Good dark red. A bit redder and more showy in its fruit character and less medicinal on the nose than the Petits Monts. Rounder and sweeter in the mouth, with a palate-saturating flavor of dark cherry confiture. Builds impressively on the ripely tannic back end, with a strong violet note emerging. Very different from the Petits Monts in shape and style: this is rounder while the Petits Monts is more minerally and upright.

Good bright-medium red. Tight, dark aromas of black fruits and licorice pastille lifted by a whiff of cranberry. Ripe and broad, but with terrific inner-mouth floral lift and a rocky pungency. Tannins are fully ripe and fine-grained. Offers a rather exhilarating--and uncommon--combination of cooler flavors and full phenolic ripeness. This wine comes from a very cool, east-facing site planted on rock, which had difficulty ripening its fruit prior to global warming. A tighter, more intellectual style than the Champeaux: Fourrier loves the Goulots with sushi, while he'd pair the Champeaux with a rib-eye steak.

Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Rather wild scents of crushed cherry stomp, flowers, medicinal herbs and minerals. Offers a lovely fine-grained texture and sweetness of fruit but still in a juicy style for all its ripeness. Very good for this cuvée but there are just three barrels of this juice from 0.34 hectare--or not much above 20 hectoliters per hectare. Savory and long on the aftertaste, with plenty of tannic support.

Silky in texture, it fans out with marvelous precision towards the finish. The oak is seamlessly integrated. A fabulous wine from start to finish. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Vinous (94-96)

Wine Advocate (92+)

Burghound (91-93)

A ripe and brooding nose offers up notes of both red and dark currant, raspberry and a really lovely array of floral elements. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is at once finer and more delineated though notably less concentrated and powerful while the lingering and equally firmly structured finish possesses a different texture as the 100% whole cluster vinification is more obvious. Good stuff here as well in a built-to-age style.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Clos le Village lost 40% of the production, less than others due to the protection of the church that lies in close proximity. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a clean and pure bouquet with Morello cherries, raspberry preserve and a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, the oak nicely integrated here and with good substance on the finish for a village cru. Merci à l'église!

Vinous (91-94)

(13.3 alcohol; 40% vendange entier; 80% new oak; no frost): Good dark red. A bit redder and more showy in its fruit character and less medicinal on the nose than the Petits Monts. Rounder and sweeter in the mouth, with a palate-saturating flavor of dark cherry confiture. Builds impressively on the ripely tannic back end, with a strong violet note emerging. Very different from the Petits Monts in shape and style: this is rounder while the Petits Monts is more minerally and upright.

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes is excellent, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of dark chocolate, cassis, wild berries and plums. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered core of crunchy fruit, fine structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. While this is very elegant in style this year, it has more than enough substance to evolve in bottle for two decades or more.

Vinous (91-93)

Vinous (89-92)

Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Rather wild scents of crushed cherry stomp, flowers, medicinal herbs and minerals. Offers a lovely fine-grained texture and sweetness of fruit but still in a juicy style for all its ripeness. Very good for this cuvée but there are just three barrels of this juice from 0.34 hectare--or not much above 20 hectoliters per hectare. Savory and long on the aftertaste, with plenty of tannic support.
