Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru demands a little coaxing from the glass, with dark cherries, raspberry preserve and briary aromas, gradually unfurling but never fully letting go like the Chapelle-Chambertin. The palate is very well structured with a firm backbone, quite Mazoyères-like in style, the mineralité flooding out towards the second half that displays an insistent grip and impressive length. The 2017 Volnay En Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru has a slightly disjointed bouquet that requires only a couple of minutes to gain focus and delineation, though the aromatics lack the vibrancy and purity of the succeeding vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with pretty red cherry and red plum fruit, coming across a little conservative toward the finish, but boy, does this meliorate with aeration! After a couple of hours it suddenly goes up through the gears, developing more precision and harmony than it had immediately after opening. My score reflects this Volnay in full flight.

  • Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2017 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was matured in around 80% new oak, the barrels toasted chauff blonde. Jacques Desvauges mentioned that the wine needed oxygen ingress during maturation that only new oak can give. I tasted the component parts (as usual) as well as the blend. This has a very detailed, delineated bouquet offering mainly black fruit mixed with sous-bois, tobacco, clove and bay leaf, the typicité of the appellation showing through nicely. It feels very succinct and yet so fresh. The palate is beautifully balanced on the entry with a killer line of acidity. Pure black cherry fruit is joined by bilberry, hints of black olive and a marine/oyster shell tincture that comes through quite strongly toward the persistent, saline finish, which fans out with confidence. This is a brilliant follow-up to the benchmark 2016 by Jacques Desvauges and his team.

  • Coche-Dury Meursault 2017 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

The 2017 Meursault Village is a brilliant young wine, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp Anjou pear, green apple, dried white flowers, toasted sesame and hazelnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and elegantly satiny, with racy acids, discrete structuring dry extract, and a long, elegantly chalky finish. Raphaël Coche thinks this will prove reminiscent of the domaine's 2001—in so far as the 2001 drank well in its youth, but despite its youthful precocity, it proved surprisingly long lived. Here, the expressiveness of the vintage meets the tensile, age-worthy Coche style to great effect. Tasted multiple times with consistent notes.

  • Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseigneres 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseigneres comes from a single hectare of vines planted in the 1950s. I often feel their Puligny is overlooked simply for the crime of not being "Meursault." The bouquet is very precise and focused, offering Golden Delicious apple, honeysuckle and light fennel scents, plus faint orange blossom aromas. The palate is powerful and intense with a fine bead of acidity, hints of praline infusing the slightly peachy fruit, and then coheres beautifully toward the persistent finish. This is simply an outstanding Puligny-Montrachet that effortlessly punches at Premier Cru level.

The 25–30% new oak is so neatly folded into the fruit that it is barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite citrus-driven, revealing orange peel and blood orange notes. • Comte Armand Volnay 2017 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (88-91)

In contrast to the first two wines, here the nose is sufficiently reduced to render an evaluation difficult. By contrast there is good freshness and verve to the more precisely detailed middle weight flavors where the supporting tannins are notably finer even though the finish is also ever-so-slightly rustic. The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. The 2017 La Romanée Grand Cru shows a minuscule touch of VA on the nose, but not enough to cover the intense brambly red fruit underneath, or the veins of blueberry and violet; instead, it lends energy to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a killer line of acidity, and firm but fine, satin-textured tannins. This is full of energy and tension and finishes amazingly long and reassuringly luxuriant. Utterly sublime, and it surpasses my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and quite rounded, though at the moment, this is dictated by the new oak, which renders the finish a bit generic. • Clos de Tart Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (88)

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart opens in the glass with a generous bouquet of ripe cherries, berries and rose petals that are framed by a touch of creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and open, with a charming core of fruit and youthfully chewy tannins that are more evident from bottle than they were from barrel.

  • Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

    Decanter (92)

Comte Armand's premier cru blend comes from two sites - Les Bréterins and Bas des Duresses - which are combined in more or less equal proportions to produce this sturdy, firm, serious Auxey red. It's sappy and structured with well-integrated 20% new wood.

  • Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2017 Auxey-Duresses Village has a lovely bouquet of quite precocious red cherries and crushed strawberry on the nose; undergrowth scents and hints of dark chocolate develop with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a citric opening. A little angular at the moment but displays fine depth. This is a fruit-driven Auxey-Duresses that might need another couple of years to smooth its edges.

  • Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 2017 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet that fulfills its potential from barrel, offering immediately seductive brambly red fruit, crushed minerals and pressed rose petals. The 25–30% new oak is so neatly folded into the fruit that it is barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite citrus-driven, revealing orange peel and blood orange notes. Linear at first and then gently fans out and gains depth toward the persistent finish. Superb.

A quality Volnay villages.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2017 (1x150cl)

    Jancis Robinson (18+)

Their biggest holding. Oldest vines planted in 1953 and still in good shape. And all more than 25 years old. Deep crimson. The sort of freshness that I associate with stems even though this is fully destemmed. Cedary, cool, dark fruit, intense and just a touch dusty/stony/mineral. Perfectly matched on the palate with that rocky dark-fruit purity, dry yet succulent, and fragrant. Deep and contemplative and so much more to come. Refined texture.

  • Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Lavières was showing some reduction on the nose, making it difficult to read during my visit. The medium-bodied palate features sappy black fruit tinged with wild mint, moderate weight, and hints of licorice toward the finish. Not bad, but I find its exotic elements just a little distracting.

  • Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Reignots 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru has a lot of fruit on the nose (mulberry, red plums and crushed strawberry) and comes across plush and quite oaky, with a little reduction to address. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and quite rounded, though at the moment, this is dictated by the new oak, which renders the finish a bit generic. The oak may well be absorbed with age, allowing the fruit to shine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

  • Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (86-88)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village was completely de-stemmed this year. The dark cherry and cranberry bouquet is pure and well-defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, offering black cherries and a hint of cassis, plus a touch of orange peel on the finish. Fine, although it is not the very best Village Cru from the appellation.

  • Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or 2017 (3x75cl)

Sweet Spot Outstanding. Hints of spice and petrol add breadth to the ripe and mildly exotic aromas of white peach, mandarin orange and discreet wood influence. The bigger and richer medium weight plus flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while displaying excellent depth and drive on the focused and powerful finish. Impressive.

  • Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2017 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2017 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed some reduction on the nose, but there is impressive delineation and focus and real mineralité here. It just needs bottle age. The palate is very well balanced, a live wire of acidity, tensile and mineral-driven with a judicious touch of spice toward the persistent finish. This is very classy and persistent, translating the terroir with style, a wine that flirts with profundity. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.
