Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous (95-98)

Good bright red-ruby. Black raspberry, cassis, violet, dark chocolate, licorice and cinnamon on the restrained but very pure nose and palate. The subtly complex palate offers compelling sweetness and early charm, making this wine much easier to taste today than the Cros Parantoux. Wonderfully pliant Richebourg, delivering an exhilarating combination of sweetness and spice. The finish saturates the entire palate, with noble tannins buried under a wave of flavor.

Bright, dark red. Wonderfully complex nose offers raspberry, minerals, violet, mocha, smoke and sexy oak spices. Like liquid silk on entry, then strongly mineral in the middle, with obvious acidity that will require time to knit with the wine's fruit. Today the Brulees is sweeter. But this youthfully imploded, tannic 2008 should be great.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2010 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs is built on a serious core of fruit. This is an especially powerful, structured Volnay that impresses for its depth and muscle. Dark tonalities of fruit meld into spices, licorice and menthol as the aromas and flavors gain volume in the glass. A plush, resonant finish rounds things out in style. This is an utterly impeccable Volnay from Lafarge.

Vinous (95)

Good medium red with a healthy rim. Alluring, deeply pitched aromas of raspberry, mocha, dried flowers, spices and smoky oak. Then juicy, salty and penetrating, with the low yield of the vintage obvious in the wine's intensity. Firm acidity--probably higher than the last three wines, notes Marie-Andrée--energizes and sharpens the highly complex flavors of red and darker berries, licorice, spices, blood orange and black pepper. A wine with outstanding precision, this beauty boasts terrific inner-mouth floral lift and also spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate on the very long whiplash of a finish. Plenty of soil-driven minerality here and still distinctly firm-edged on the aftertaste. Marie-Christine noted that this wine was very closed when she pulled the cork an hour before our tasting. (13.5% alcohol; 3.5 pH; 35 hl/h; harvested on September 25)

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-94)

Bright, deep red. Tangy red cherry and raspberry aromas are complicated by high-pitched spices, flowers and crushed rock. Sweet, bright and penetrating, but with good supple density giving a seamless texture to the middle palate. In fact, this is quite creamy for the vintage, in spite of its brisk acidity. Spreads out nicely to coat the mouth on the long, perfumed, gripping aftertaste. A terrific vintage for this cuvee.

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges La Richemone Ultra, from a vineyard planted in 1902, is super-finessed and classy. The fruit seems to hover on the palate. Dark cherries, plums, sweet spices and mint are some of the many notes that come together in the glass. The precise, understated finish is beautifully articulated. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030.

Moderately saturated medium red. Musky aromas of cherrry, raspberry, coffee and underbrush; aromatic and wild. Suave, sweet and soft, boasting considerable early appeal but also plenty of vivacity. Finishes sappy, suave and long, with enough harmonious acidity to carry the fruit. Christophe Perrot-Minot noted that pHs in 2010 are consistently in the healthy 3.38 to 3.45 range.

Colin-Morey's 2010 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Enseignières captures the best elements of the vintage. It is at once intense yet weightless, with a cool minerality that is presently keeping the fruit from being fully expressive. In another year or two the Enseignières should begin to blossom.

Wine Advocate (95)

I ordered a bottle of the 2010 Chablis 1er Cru les Butteaux at the impeccable Au Fil du Zinc restaurant in Chablis and immediately grabbed my pen to scribble a tasting note. This is such a scintillating Chablis, one that encapsulates everything great about the 2010 vintage. The nose is mineral through and through--imagine getting down on your hands and knees and just inhaling limestone after a shower. The palate continues that tensile, mineral-driven theme. It is incredibly tense, perhaps benefiting from a slight, but pleasant reduction towards the finish, with awesome length and precision. What a fantastic Butteaux from Domaine Raveneau.

The 2010 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from one of Raveneau’s strongest vineyards, and it does not disappoint. The bouquet is steely and aloof at first, then suddenly turns more crystalline, bearing a strong marine influence with hints of kelp and sea spray. The balanced, penetrating palate displays a perfect line of acidity. Everything is in the right place here, culminating in what I wrote down as a “rocky” finish. Dare I say that this is about as good as Chablis can get?

Good full red. Very subdued nose hints at redcurrant, spicy herbs and underbrush. Highly concentrated but youthfully tight, with a lightly saline quality to the complex flavors of blueberry, wild herbs, sandalwood and mocha. Just this side of thick but its superb balance of sweetness and acidity keeps it vibrant in the mouth. The long, ripely tannic finish features an exhilarating salty minerality. I may be underrating this.
