Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (87-89)

Pale, bright yellow. Steely aromas of apple, spices and mint. Fat and peachy in the mouth, with complicating notes of spice and butter. Offers very good fruit and length for village wine.

Vinous (94+)

Red-ruby. Forceful aromas of briary dark berries, plum, smoke, coffee and earth, with the subtle vegetal/herbal complexity that is the essence of this grand cru. Tight and bright, but a wine of great intensity and richness, with compelling chewy depths. Less tasteable today than the Combottes but this has more dimension and class. Finishes extremely subtle and long. This will require patience.

Vinous (95+)

Deep, sappy aromas of plum, currant, minerals and smoke, with a compelling earthy complexity. Thick on entry, then youthfully backward and vibrant in the middle palate. A seamless wine that remains light on its feet despite its compelling density and major volume. Finishes with sweet tannins, a note of spicy oak and outstanding persistence.

Burghound (94)

(Outstanding) Assertively complex and spicy black fruit nose introduces seductive, intense, big yet refined flavors that completely coat the mouth and rest so long on the palate that this is frankly almost sensory overload. Tannic, concentrated, deep and weighty yet without a trace of heaviness or lack of balance. As good as the Vignerondes but again, the expression is different - the Boudots is perhaps bigger and more concentrated whereas the Vignerondes is silk and elegance. Either way, it's a very high class problem to choose between them.

Vinous (94+)

Bright ruby-red. Slightly blacker, less exotic nose dominated by dark berries, licorice and minerals. Less lush and more reserved today than the RSV but penetrating, vibrant and gripping. Really folded in on itself and hiding more than it's revealing; less obviously sweet than the RSV. But the long, minerally, very fine finish suggests that this wine will reward a decade or so of bottle aging.

Vinous (90)

Good deep red. Ripe aromas of black raspberry, smoky oak and earth. Sweet, dense and vinous, with currant and licorice flavors and a solid mineral underpinning. Chewy and rich. Lalou Bize says this began with 13% natural alcohol and was chaptalized less than a degree.

Ponsot's 2001 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is going from strength to strength, and this bottle was showing beautifully, wafting from the glass with notes of red plums, smoked duck, cherries, spices, mustard seed and potpourri. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with chalky but melting tannins, tangy acids and a long, stony finish. Somewhat rustic in profile, it isn't the most elegant vintage of Ponsot's Clos de la Roche, but it's beginning to drink well today.

Vinous (91+)

Reticent, very pure aromas of citrus skin, apple, wet stone, spearmint and spices. Spicy, quite dry and uncompromising; dense, fat, full and minerally. Not higher in sugar than the foregoing samples but more glyceral in texture. Finishes long, classically dry and minerally. This really transcends the vintage.

Burghound (92)

I slightly misjudged this as it has really harmonized in the last 6 months with its explosive and spicy black fruit nose and robust yet stylish and classy full-bodied flavors of considerable depth, weight, power and length. A really lovely effort of impressive ripeness and density for the vintage and one that should amply reward patience over the medium term. In short, this is most impressive.

Vinous (92)

Medium red. At once mature and vibrant on the nose, offering rich scents of plum, tobacco, spices, mocha and underbrush. A juicy, spicy wine with modest flesh and texture but intriguing vinosity. Aeration brought fresher red fruits and even more energy and thrust. A savory, classically dry, middle-of-the-road style, displaying a captivating juicy coolness and better integration of acidity and tannins than the '04. A beauty in the context of its vintage. Trapet told me that this wine's malolactic fermentation did not finish until the summer of 2002. (13.3% alcohol; 3.55 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity; 39.5 h/h)
