Burgundy

When it comes to the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands tall as one of the most revered and sought-after regions. Renowned for its exceptional terroir and commitment to quality, Burgundy has long captivated enthusiasts with its exquisite and highly prized wines. Today, let us delve into the realm of the best and most expensive wines that Burgundy has to offer, a realm where true wine aficionados can indulge in the pinnacle of winemaking excellence.

At the heart of Burgundy's prestige lie its renowned vineyards, which have garnered global acclaim for their exceptional wines. The names that resonate in the world of Burgundy are Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Armand Rousseau, and Domaine Georges Roumier. These vineyards have become synonymous with greatness, crafting wines that define elegance, complexity, and longevity.

Burgundy's most esteemed wines are crafted from two noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The region's red wines, made predominantly from Pinot Noir, display a finesse and purity of fruit that are unmatched. Vineyards such as Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and Richebourg produce red wines that command astronomical prices due to their exceptional quality and limited production.

For white wine enthusiasts, Burgundy's Chardonnay-based wines are a true revelation. Vineyards like Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, and Meursault showcase the full potential of this noble grape, producing wines of unparalleled richness, depth, and complexity. These whites epitomize the artistry of winemaking, with each sip revealing layers of flavors and a harmonious balance between fruit, minerality, and oak.

In the world of fine wines, Burgundy stands as an epitome of elegance, complexity, and refined craftsmanship. Its best and most expensive wines are a testament to the region's unwavering commitment to excellence, terroir-driven winemaking, and the artistry of the winemakers.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98+)

Then came the 2009 Bonnes-Mares. What a wine! While the Musigny showed more of a red fruit profile, the Bonnes-Mares was quite a bit darker. It also had a lot more underlying structure. With time in the glass, hints of menthol, tar and dried roses added complexity. Both wines took us on a journey. Ultimately, though, the Musigny gave up its charms easier, while the Bonnes-Mares continued to open up over several hours, seemingly with something new to say with each taste. It was flat-out monumental. The stuff dreams are made of.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru puts in a very impressive performance alongside the 2010. With plush red fruit, red cherries intermingling with wild strawberries, this is one of Roumier's most generous Les Cras whilst it retains disarming transparency and precision. The palate is beautifully balanced with crushed stone infusing the red fruit, hints of blood orange and spices. The pixelated finish leaves you just wanting more. This might get even better with continued bottle age. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is loaded with class and energy. There is tremendous energy in the glass as layers of dark cherries, mint, graphite, crushed rocks, spices and licorice gain volume and breath through the mid-palate and finish. I very much like the intensity and focus here. The Cras is going to need at least another few years in bottle, but it is shaping up to be truly stellar.

Dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol and licorice are some of the many notes that are woven together in the 2009 Grands- Echézeaux. I very much like the depth and intensity of the fruit. Today the 2009 appears to be holding much of its ultimate potential in reserve. Ideally the wine needs a few more years to flesh out. The fragrant, silky finish leaves me quite hopeful for the future.

The 2009 Richebourg blossoms in every direction with seemingly endless layers of flavor. An exotic melange of plums, red cherries, flowers and mint starts to take shape as the wine opens up in the glass. There is a pure radiance to the 2009 that is impossible to miss. At the same time, the firm Richebourg tannins keep everything in check. Higher-toned notes develop in the glass, balancing some of the wine’s more virile tendencies. The 2009 remains a bit of a brute and definitely needs further bottle age. This is going to be a fascinating wine to follow. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.

The 2009 Meursault Boucheres emerges form the glass with lime, bright citrus, white flowers and crushed rocks. It shows gorgeous inner tension, expressive perfume and a long, impeccably silky finish. Bright floral notes add lift on the finish. This could probably use another few years in bottle. This is a very steep slope that passes very quickly from being ripe to over-ripe, so the harvest date is critical.

Deep ruby-red. Brooding aromas of medicinal black cherry, licorice and dusty spices. Wonderfully sweet and supple for young Clos Vougeot, with powerful black fruit flavors enlivened by violet. Quite racy and energetic in the middle for all its creaminess. Finishes with big, broad, fine-grained tannins and superb persistence. Boillot has owned these vines in Le Grand Maupertuis (planted in 1976 and 1952) since 2008.

The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin (from vines in Mazoyeres) shows gorgeous density and depth in a round, engaging style. This is a highly engaging, textured wine but it is also remarkably open for a grand cru, even in 2009. I am not sure it will make old bones, but it should drink nicely for a handful of years. The Charmes is made from partially purchased fruit that is used to augment the estate’s small holdings. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

(13.8% alcohol) Good full medium red. Very closed but deep nose hints at wild raspberry. Large-scaled, rich and sweet, with terrific creamy depths even if it's not yet expressing itself. Boasts the greatest volume of these 2009s but still rather unformed. Best today on the very long finish, where ripe tannins are smothered in fruit.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureses is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. At the same time, it is pretty clear the wine has already begun to shut down. With time in the glass, some of the typical weightless energy of Amoureuses comes through, but despite its considerable appeal, the wine is showing only a fraction of its ultimate potential. The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees impresses for its superb textural richness. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and spices are woven together in a fabric of notable beauty. There is plenty of tannic material, but the fruit is so dense the wine’s structural elements are a bit in the background. The wine continued to close down in the glass, which is likely to be quite positive for its aging potential. Despite the massive temptation to drink this early, my impression is that patience will be rewarded. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

(this was racked off its lees the day before my visit and was slated to be bottled before the 2011 harvest): Slightly cloudy yellow. Aromas of peach, apple, spices and crushed stone, with a hint of noble reduction. At once chewy and smooth, with a distinctly taut quality to its flavors of apricot, minerals, anise and flint. Finishes saline and powerful, with a flavor of custard pie as well as a note of grapefruit pith that tickles the taste buds. Lots of aging potential here.

Good medium red. Slightly reduced, reserved aromas of kirsch, minerals and clove. Quite taut in the mouth, and showing much more energy in bottle than it displayed from barrel in November of 2010. The medicinal redcurrant and red cherry fruit flavors are complemented by saline and pronounced spice qualities. Ultimately silky and classy wine, with a long, clinging finish that shows continuing spice character. This needs a good eight to ten years of bottle aging.

The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is fabulous. Waves of fruit jump from the glass. The Beaux-Monts impresses for its textural depth and richness. Deep red-ruby, the darkest of the range. Superripe aromas of black cherry, tobacco, licorice, mint, minerals, violet and orange peel; even the nose conveys an impression of tightly coiled energy. The palate delivers almost confectionery sweetness but with solid underlying spine to the black fruit, violet and licorice flavors. Finishes with noble, sweet, fine-grained tannins and great perfumed, spicy, slow-building persistence. This is almost painfully backward and will need a good decade to express itself.

The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is fabulous. Waves of fruit jump from the glass. The Beaux-Monts impresses for its textural depth and richness. There is an intense minerality to the fruit that gives the wine much of its power. The Beaux-Monts is firing on all cylinders today. A crescendo of fruit saturates the palate on the finish. This is another headspinning 2009 from Grivot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.

Vinous (89)

Good full red. Wild, musky, slightly reduced aromas of dark berries, leather and meat. Very round and seamless, with strong notes of oaky torrefaction. Shows less fruit vibrancy than the Beaux Monts and comes across as more aggressive--and decadent--on the back end. Plenty of power and palate-saturating tannins here.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92+)

Medium red. Wild, musky aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, mocha and coffee. Thick and dense but shapely, with good energy to the dark fruit, mineral and bitter chocolate flavors. At once large-scaled and confectionery for young RSV, this wine really calls for six to eight years of cellaring.

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is wonderfully sweet, centered and polished. Silky tannins grace the palate as this exquisite wine opens up in the glass. The finish remains long, sweet and totally impeccable. The Amoureuses is always one of my favorites here, and the 2009 is gorgeous. Drouhin used 30% whole clusters.

This has some subtle power, but in appearance it's all silk and finesse. Cherry, strawberry, currant and mineral aromas and flavors advance stealthily, as this builds in intensity to a long, lingering conclusion. The finish is its best feature. Best from 2016 through 2035. 28 cases imported. -BS

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (97)

Deep red-ruby, the darkest of the range. Superripe aromas of black cherry, tobacco, licorice, mint, minerals, violet and orange peel; even the nose conveys an impression of tightly coiled energy. The palate delivers almost confectionery sweetness but with solid underlying spine to the black fruit, violet and licorice flavors. Finishes with noble, sweet, fine-grained tannins and great perfumed, spicy, slow-building persistence. This is almost painfully backward and will need a good decade to express itself.
