Vinous (90-92)(these vines range in age from 50 to 105 years, according to Dugat; made with 60% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak): Initially reticent aromas of boysenberry, violet, licorice and espresso show subtle complexity and a stronger torrefaction quality with aeration. Plush in texture but less expressive and harmonious today than the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. The purple fruit and licorice flavors are nicely lifted by herbal and spicy nuances from the stems, which contribute elegance and lift. Very easily digestible and not at all hard, but the building tannins will nonetheless require some patience. (Incidentally, Dugat was not ready to present his Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes, as the wine finished its malo very late and had just been racked.) |

Vinous (91-93)Assembled from several parcels of 80- to 100-year-old vines, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy" has an elegant, seductive bouquet of pure raspberry and wild strawberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe sappy red fruit, good structure and very well-integrated new oak toward the finish. This has good potential. |

Vinous (88-90)The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy," blended with 40% whole bunch, has an intense bouquet of small dark cherries mixed with raspberry and black currant pastille scents; there is fine delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins, well-judged acidity and a stocky and quite grippy, chalky-textured finish. Give this 18–24 months once in bottle to smooth its edges. |
