Wine Advocate (88+)I seldom taste the regional appellations on my visits to the Domaine Dugat-Py, so when I saw the 2015 Bourgogne Cuvée Halinard on a Côte d'Or wine list, I made a point of ordering it. This is a lovely wine, wafting from the glass with a classy bouquet of red cherries, cassis, grilled meat and rich soil, subtly framed by a judicious touch of recently used oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of ripe but savory fruit, fine-grained structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish, with juicy balancing acids. The substance that is this domaine's calling card is certainly present, and it will undoubtedly improve with five to ten years of bottle age—at maturity, I suspect it will embarrass many village wines. Interestingly, it's both a touch more savory and a touch more structured than the lovely 2015 Bourgogne Rouge from Domaine Claude Dugat that I tasted a few days before. |

Wine Advocate (94)Bernard Dugat relates that his 2006 Charmes-Chambertin – constituting one-third Mazoyeres, and the rest vines near the Morey line – largely escaped hail. A sweet concentrate of black cherry mingles with game and peat. Firmness of tannin combined with notes chalky and charred notes make for a relatively spare overall impression, considering the initially sweet fruit impression. Heliotrope and vanilla scents waft throughout, adding allure. The balance between density and buoyancy here is uncanny and the wine's sheer length prodigious, although this is embryonic compared with most of its stable mates. Be prepared to give it 3-4 years in bottle before a clearer picture of its full potential emerges, although it will certainly last well for more than a decade. When one returns to it after the more powerful Mazoyeres, this Charmes' incipient charms become more evident. |

Wine Advocate (96)Offering up aromas of cherries, wild berries, licorice and loamy soil that only hint at the aromatic range to come with a little bottle age, the 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and sumptuous, its deep and multidimensional core fruited by rich but refined tannins and lively balancing acids, concluding with a long, beautifully defined finish. This is a serious, concentrated Charmes that—as I wrote last year—fully vindicates Loïc Dugat-Py's decision to harvest early, as well as his move to a reduced percentage of new oak (only 66%) for this cuvée. |
