Château Canon-la-Gaffelière
About Château Canon-la-Gaffelière
Château Canon-La-Gaffelière now sits proudly as a Saint Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé (B) estate. Count Joseph Hubert von Neipperg purchased Canon-La-Gaffelière in 1971, and the von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Currently, Stephan von Neipperg manages Canon-La-Gaffelière as well as several other Saint Émilion estates owned by the family. Château Ausone is visible from certain points on the property. The vineyards are farmed using 100% organic methods. The small 19.5ha vineyard is planted with 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. The old vines average close to 50 years of age. They also have much older vines which are close to 80 years old. Although this Saint Émilion estate is situated close to many great names in the appellation, before Stephan Von Neipperg took over in 1983, it was never considered in the same league. This is no longer the case, and Canon-La-Gaffelière sits only just below the four Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) properties today (Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Angélus and Pavie).Product Name | Region | Qty | Score | Price | |||||

It bursts on the scene with exuberant notes of juicy blackberries, plum preserves, and fruit cake, plus suggestions of clove oil, mocha, and Indian spices. Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95+)The 2017 Canon La Gaffelière is another highlight in this range from Stephan von Neipperg. Bright, floral and punchy, the 2017 impresses for its energy and drive. Dried rose petal, mint, sage, tobacco, cedar and licorice add pretty top notes to this highly nuanced, layered Saint-Émilion. The Cabernet Franc is so expressive here. Quite simply, the 2017 is a wine of pure and total finesse. Tasted two times. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)The 2018 Canon La Gaffelière is bright, punchy and full of character, just as it was from barrel. Sage, blood orange, mocha and spice add pretty aromatic top notes to a core of inky red/purplish berry fruit. All the elements are so well balanced in this super-expressive Saint-Émilion. Bright floral and savory Franc notes punctuate the salivating finish, mineral-drenched finish. The 2018 needs a lot of air to open, but when it does, it is dynamite. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (97)The 2020 Canon La Gaffelière is heady, sumptuous and totally exotic. A wine of depth and striking intensity, the 2020 possesses tremendous balance right out of the gate. Ripe red plum, blood orange, pomegranate, spice and leather all meld together effortlessly. There's real presence and depth here. Time in the glass brings out the purity of the flavors. The blend is 55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. I can't wait to see how this ages |
