Comte Liger-Belair

Although the Domaine is relatively recent, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, an engineer and oenologist, is renewing a two hundred year old family tradition. The vines are biodynamicaly cultivated and a horse ploughs part of the vineyard.  Owning excellent vineyards, he produces wines that are light, aromatic and elegant.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2003 (1x150cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (92)

Ruby-red. Subdued, superripe nose shows musky plum and humus; this seems muted by sulfur. Then fat, rich, full and sweet, with an almost candied fruit character. Densely packed but a bit inscrutable and quite backward today, with the roasted character carrying through on the extremely long finish, which hints at menthol and nuts. The yield here was 37 hectoliters per hectare, compared to 30 for the Reignots, says Liger-Belair.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2009 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (97)

Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2009 La Romanée Grand Cru is going from strength to strength. It has a clear dark garnet colour. The nose is exquisite, perhaps having dispensed with just some of its nascent richness since I last tasted it in 2011, armed with bewitching wild strawberry, raspberry coulis scents that crescendo. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully balanced with that tincture of dried blood extant. There is real finesse and poise embroidered in this La Romanée that knows that sometimes less is more. Tasted June 2015.

Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2010 (2x75cl)

Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (95-98 )

Bright medium red. Superripe, soil-driven aromas of raspberry, coffee, mocha, cocoa powder and leather. The silky palate offers almost confectionery sweetness paired with outstanding energy, with all the major Burgundy food groups represented here: fruits, flowers, spices, earth, minerals. The explosive, extremely primary finish saturates the palate and leaves the taste buds humming. A great expression of soil. The 2010s here will go into bottle with alcohol between 12.7% and 13.2%, with chaptalization ranging from 0.2% to 0.5%, according to Liger-Belair.
