    Fourrier

This small Burgundy Domaine has been producing some very well-regarded wines from its base in Gevrey-Chambertin. Producing wines in the region over four generations, there are few producers with as much regional expertise. The current vigneron, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over in 1994 after completing an internship with Henri Jayer, arguably the most legendary winemaker in modern Burgundy. There are hints of Jayer in the style and the wines are truly delicious.

    2005

    Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St-Jacques 2005 (12x75cl)

    Stephen Tanzer - Vinous (95)

Good deep red-ruby. The nose offers compelling perfume of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and smoke. Lush, silky and fine-grained, with impressively concentrated but very suave flavors of raspberry, minerals and flowers. Offers superb inner-mouth lift. Finishes very broad and long, with building but very refined tannins. Fourrier notes that even for this wine he uses just 20% new oak, as he likes to have a high percentage of used barrels to preserve CO2 levels in the wines. "Besides, it's really the village wines that need the support of new oak," he added.

    2013

    Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines 2013 (1x900cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Healthy medium red. Slightly stunted but pure aromas of red berries and black cherry are less exuberant than those of the Champeaux. Also more restrained and tightly wound in the mouth, but with vibrant acidity and a sensation of peppery grip giving the wine terrific inner-mouth energy. Classic 2013 in its tautness and cut. Finishes ripely tannic and long; this should be a beauty with mid-term cellaring.

    Fourrier Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru VV 2002 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (94)

Good medium red. Strawberry, raspberry, rose petal and smoked meat on the nose. A wine of compelling complexity and purity of flavor, with firm minerality leavening the impression of sweetness. Offers a wonderfully fine-grained texture and an extremely long, subtle back end. Even more complex than the Clos-Saint-Jacques but a bit less forthcoming today.
