    Fourrier

This small Burgundy Domaine has been producing some very well-regarded wines from its base in Gevrey-Chambertin. Producing wines in the region over four generations, there are few producers with as much regional expertise. The current vigneron, Jean-Marie Fourrier took over in 1994 after completing an internship with Henri Jayer, arguably the most legendary winemaker in modern Burgundy. There are hints of Jayer in the style and the wines are truly delicious.

From purchased grapes in the Côte de Nuits, the 2018 Bourgogne Rouge has a slightly tarry bouquet of ripe summer fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, fine acidity and a slightly compact finish. Give it a year once in bottle.

A fresh but restrained nose is completely different as it's less spicy and more floral with lovely and airy notes of both red and dark currant scents. There is good delineation to the vibrant middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the firm, balanced and lingering finish. This does not yet possess superior complexity but my predicted range assumes that it will develop based on the quality of the underlying material.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a winsome bouquet, very pure and quite floral with vivid red cherries and red plummy fruit laced with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, harmonious and silky smooth with a precise finish. Elegant and suave, this will be a very delicious Chambolle-Musigny.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a flattering bouquet with violet and peony tinged black cherry fruit, well-defined and focused. The oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, quite granular in texture with a brisk, saline finish. Give this 2-4 years in bottle and it should turn into a fine Chambolle that will be hard to resist in its flush of youth.

Three casks from three different spots. Slightly cloudy cherry red. Really rich and solid. From a very good producer (a long-term proposition) and made in the domaine philosophy. Lots of tannin on the end. Very energetic. Very slightly bitter on the end.

The 2013 Echézeaux Grand Cru (which comes from the lieu-dit of En Orveaux) has a slight reduction on the nose, but beneath lies fine redcurrant and iodine scents that should be quite intense once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, fleshy tannins, crisp acidity and good density on the finish. This is a very fine Echézeaux in the making, though I suspect that the 2012 will be the one to seek out.

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a decadent bouquet of red cherry and cranberry aromas, touches of pain d’épices and a hint of menthol emerging with time. But somehow it manages to retain control. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, slightly chalky tannins, good depth and a gentle grip toward the focused finish. This should age extremely well.

The 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques engages all of the senses with its cool, mineral-laced fruit and expressive bouquet. This shows marvelous tension and energy, not to mention fabulous overall balance. It could not be more different in style than the 2009 tasted alongside it. Both are fabulous, though. The 2008 is one of the more backward wines of the vintage and will require considerable patience. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2033.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques from Jean-Marie Fourrier has a generous nose of brambly red fruit, a touch of sage and broom, well defined and with plenty of fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins compared to Bruno Clair's own Clos Saint Jacques, but there is precision and character here, the terroir very expressive with superb mineralité towards the long and sustained finish, a ferrous note persistent on the aftertaste. This is a wine of tremendous transparency and it is totally engaging. Tasted September 2016.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of mixed red and black fruit and a faint touch of tomato vine. It becomes more floral with aeration. The palate has fine structure, and there’s some clever stem addition apparent here, lending this Clos Saint-Jacques a subtle leafy character. Focused with fine weight toward the finish, this is very persistent and quite saline on the aftertaste. Reserved, but the pedigree is undeniable. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru exhibits more whole bunch character than the other four "CSJs". Brambly red fruit, brown spices and a touch of wet limestone. This is unquestionably the most transparent of the five. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, slightly coarser tannins but so much energy and tension. Perhaps it just tapers a little towards the finish? This is very classy, yet atypical in style for Jean-Marie Fourrier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very precise bouquet, taut and fresh, wonderfully focused with black cherries, crushed strawberry and a touch of blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth texture, filigree tannins that frame the slightly confit-like black fruit, leading to a slightly candied finish. This CSJ will need several years to really meld together in bottle.
