    Henri Boillot

The Boillot family established themselves in the region in 1885, and Henri represents the fifth winemaking generation, with his son now overseeing the production of the reds.

The winery is located on the “other” side of the RN74 in an estate that includes the Damy cooperage. This impressive facility affords Henri far more space then if he were couched in some mediaeval maison in one of the villages, which is mandatory when you have such an all-embracing portfolio of wines.

Henri Boillot produces domaine and negociant wines from Burgandy’s most renowned growing areas. Henri is a 5th generation vigneron in the Cote d’Or. Wines of Maison Henri Boillot are produced in a cellar in Meursault and are vibrant and full of character.

    • Henri Boillot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2005 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (92-95)

(a negociant wine, but Boillot harvested these grapes and vinified with 30% whole clusters; aged in all new barrels) Full ruby-red. Wild aromas of black and red cherry, five-spice powder and cumin. Fat, concentrated and sweet but quite pliant, with the exotic Asian spice character accenting the sappy black raspberry and cherry fruit. Sweet but lively wine, finishing with broad tannins and terrific verve.

    • Henri Boillot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2006 (1x75cl)

      Vinous (90-92)

(a negociant wine, but Boillot took over the vineyard work here in July) Medium red. A burst of cherry, licorice and spice on the nose, along with a coolish peppery note. Supple but juicy, with lively flavors of pepper and spices. Finishes long, peppery and aromatic, with dusty tannins and an almost gum-numbing austerity. The fruit here came in with 13.5% potential alcohol, but this is not going to be an early charmer.

Deep ruby-red. Brooding aromas of medicinal black cherry, licorice and dusty spices. Wonderfully sweet and supple for young Clos Vougeot, with powerful black fruit flavors enlivened by violet. Quite racy and energetic in the middle for all its creaminess. Finishes with big, broad, fine-grained tannins and superb persistence. Boillot has owned these vines in Le Grand Maupertuis (planted in 1976 and 1952) since 2008.

Bright, dark red. Captivating aromas and flavors of raspberry, flowers and gibier, lifted by a note of white pepper. Comes across as distinctly wild after Boillot's estate bottlings from the Côte de Beaune. Quite broad and round for both Clos Vougeot and the 2014 vintage, offering noteworthy freshness, pliancy and depth. Finishes very smooth and long, with ripe, fine-grained tannins and no hard edges.

      Wine Advocate (94)

Boillot's 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which hails from the lieu-dit Grand Maupertui (neighboring Anne Gros' parcel), reveals a brooding bouquet of cassis, plum, musk and incense, framed by toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and multidimensional, fresh and vibrant despite its considerable amplitude and power, with a fine-grained chassis of tannin and a long, sapid finish. This is a rich, lavish Clos Vougeot which should develop beautifully in the cellar.

A pretty and very fresh if quite restrained nose is composed by notes of plum, dark cherry and discreet wood nuances. There is outstanding richness to the round and admirably pure big-bodied flavors that possess impressive mid-palate concentration while concluding in a markedly firm, dusty, mouth coating and moderately austere finish that delivers seriously good length. When the Boillots’ previous source started to bottle his own wines in 2015, it was necessary to switch to another source which seems to be equally good. Rich deep purple black. This is certainly ripe, perhaps even a gamey quality. Freshens up in the glass. Huge fruit weight here, dark notes but actually a core of pure red fruit beneath. Strong but fine tannins, this is going to be quite impressive. Tasted: 10/1/2021

Good full medium red. Sexy aromas of black cherry, minerals, licorice and spices, along with the high-pitched minty nuance shown by the Chevrets. Tighter in its grain and more structured and serious than the Chevrets, but at the same time displaying more class and stronger minerality. Medium red. Explosive aromas of red berries, licorice, chocolate and underbrush. Not particularly fleshy but juicy and sharply delineated, with terrific cut to the tangy dark berry and spice flavors. Given its firm spine of acids and tannins, this Volnay also boasts lovely charm and delicacy. Finishes very long and perfumed. (Incidentally, Boillot believes that his 2010s will remain open, but I'd still give this wine at least five or six years in the cellar, as it's likely to put on weight in bottle.)

      Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-93)

Bright red-ruby. Rather brooding aromas of cassis, blackberry, smoke and licorice are pure and discreet. Surprisingly rich on entry, then lush and seamless in the middle, but with very good acidity framing and lifting the black fruit and game flavors. The powerful, rising finish features building tannins and a distinct thick-skinned character. The old vines in Boillot's parcel were strongly affected by millerandage, which largely explains this wine's extra measure of texture and concentration. Boillot noted that his 2011s generally have 3.8 to 4 grams per liter of acidity following the malos, which is quite healthy for the vintage.

      Vinous (89-92)

Bright ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, meat and smoky oak. Silky and thick but not heavy, with firm acidity and solid minerality giving definition to the black cherry fruit. Finishes with firm but ripe tannins.

    • Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2006 (12x75cl)

      Vinous (92)

Good full medium red. Sexy aromas of black cherry, minerals, licorice and spices, along with the high-pitched minty nuance shown by the Chevrets. Tighter in its grain and more structured and serious than the Chevrets, but at the same time displaying more class and stronger minerality. Finishes with excellent subtle aromatic persistence and unusually fine tannins for a Cote de Beaune 2006.

    • Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2008 (12x75cl)

      Vinous (92-95)

Deep red-ruby. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, licorice, smoky minerality and complex earth tones. Superripe, rich and full but suave, with ripe acidity framing the complex flavors of raspberry, game, leather and earth. This spreads out insidiously to saturate the entire palate. Finishes complex and extremely long. Wow!

    • Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2012 (12x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

Airy and weightless within the context of the year, the 2012 Volnay Les Caillerets is wonderfully complete and expressive. An exotic mélange of graphite, pencil shavings, white pepper and blue fruits takes shape in a precise, chiseled Burgundy that impresses for its finely cut texture and delineation. Totally vivid in the glass, the Caillerets dazzles from start to finish. This is a great example of the vintage at its very best.

      Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets displays pretty aromas of cassis and blackberries that mingle with wood smoke, spices, rich soil and dried flowers in a complex bouquet that's deftly framed by toasty new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with good concentration and depth and a fine-grained chassis of tannin.

Invariably a highlight of the portfolio, Boillot's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets derives from a low-yielding 60-are parcel of 55-year-old vines. Unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries, plums, raw cocoa and sweet soil tones, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its concentrated core of vibrant fruit underlined by succulent acids and framed by chalky tannins. This is a brilliant wine that's worth a special effort to seek out.

      Wine Advocate (94)

One of my favorite wines in the cellar is the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets, a lovely cuvée that wafts from the glass with notes of plums, rose petals, sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, it's sapid and concentrated, with refined tannins and a long, saline finish.

    • Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2020 (6x75cl)

      Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-96)

Even more intense purple than the Chevrets with a theme of intense brilliance and zest through the middle. The wood shows a bit at the moment though he has used less in his red wines this year. Will settle down. Just a touch soapy at the moment, but all the indications are of a grand vin. Sweet ripe cherries with a good thread of acidity. Tasted: 10/1/2021

    • Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets 2011 (6x75cl)
