The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru was also showing very well indeed from bottle, revealing a lovely bouquet of wild berries, spicy forest floor, dark chocolate and wild rose. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and satiny, with an elegantly textural attack, a bright core of fruit and a bright line of animating acidity, concluding with a mineral finish. Having escaped the year's frosts, this was cropped at more normal yields than the Clos Vougeot and Echezeaux, so it's no surprise it is more charming but less concentrated than those two special wines.Inc. Vinous (96)
The 2017 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a wonderful bouquet that fulfills its potential from barrel: very well defined, precise and mineral-driven with scents of black cherry, raspberry preserve and crushed stone. The pure, medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, a silky texture and a caressing, seductive finish that feels very tender and sustained. Superb.Inc. VAT£2,182.01 -
Vinous (93)
The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, desiccated orange peel and a little rooibos. The new oak is quite prominent and feels a bit reduced. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, grippy and muscular, perhaps missing some elegance and transparency. The firm finish leaves a spicy aftertaste. Give this three to four years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Inc. VAT£1,167.62 -

The superb 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village unfurls in the glass with a lovely bouquet of raspberries, cherries, dark chocolate, grilled game and spicy new wood. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a tight-knit core, fine-grained but firm structuring tannins and juicy balancing acids. This has closed down since the days of its comparatively expressive showing from barrel, and it's now clear that this is a vintage that will demand some time.Inc. VAT£582.80 -

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village confirms the promise it showed in barrel, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, peonies and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with succulent acids, melting tannins and a long and perfumed finish. While it's deceptively approachable, long-time followers of this cuvée will know that it will amply reward bottle age with enhanced depth and complexity.Inc. VAT£521.60 -
Vinous (93-95)
(just four barrels produced; my sample was a blend of all of them): Dark red-ruby color. Very deep aromas of black cherry and crushed dark raspberry lifted by subtle treble notes of white pepper and flowers. Densely packed and wonderfully velvety and full; perhaps a bit less refined than the Ruchottes due to the smaller crop and impression of chewy extract, but this wine boasts terrific definition, not to mention suave, fully ripe tannins for Clos Vougeot. Finishes lively, subtle and very long, with building richness. This fruit was harvested at 12.9% potential alcohol and the wine should age for a long time on its sheer strength of material. Splendid.Inc. VAT£4,320.02 -
Vinous (93-95)
(from the estate's two parcels in Les Rouges du Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits, both of them frosted in 2016; just 17 hectoliters per hectare produced): Deep ruby-red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, licorice and flowers, plus a note of black pepper. Offers incredible concentration to its flavors of blackberry syrup and savory minerality, conveying an almost liqueur-like ripeness for a dry wine. Painfully intense in the early going but the big tannins are buffered by the wine's impression of extract. This wine will need extended cellaring to absorb its penetrating saline minerality. I can understand why Marie-Christine Mugneret presented this wine last.Inc. VAT£1,352.00 -
