Parusso
About Parusso
A family estate and now in the hands of the fourth generation, Parusso is located right between Monforte d’Alba and Castiglione Faletto.
Marco Parusso is a true innovator in Piedmont, following such practices as leaving the grapes to rest for 3 days before crushing, allowing the stems to dry, ripening the fine tannins and using whole bunch fermentation to add freshness. Antonio Galloni (Vinous), the world's leading critical authority on Italian wine, marks Marco Parusso out as one of the most exciting producers in all of Barolo right now:
"Marco Parusso makes some of the most idiosyncratic wines in Barolo" - Antonio Galloni (Vinous)
About Parussos' Wines
The keywords here are maturity and exotic aromatics. They harvest as late as possible while still retaining elegance. New oak barrels with a very low toast are used as they believe that new wood is full of oxygen. Their basic Barolo is a blend of the youngest vines from all their sites; the next level is the single-vineyard Mariondino – which Parusso is the only owner who bottles this as a single vineyard wine. The Le Coste dei Monforte and the Bussia are bigger and more classically structured.
Parusso also produces a special selection from the Bussia Vigna Roche vineyard - Bussia Riserva Per Francesco. This cuvée has an unbelievably minuscule production of just 100 bottles, 700 magnums, 30 jeroboams and 10 Methusalems.

Good full red with an amber edge. Sweeter, higher-pitched aromas of plum and orange, plus a saline suggestion of anchovy. Not particularly primary on the palate, showing a flavor of slightly caramelized red fruits, but considerably more pliant than the Le Coste-Mosconi. The sweetest and silkiest of these 2003, finishing with late-arriving tannins that reach the incisors. Impressive for the vintage.Inc. VAT£888.04 -
James Suckling (97)
This is one of the greatest wines I have ever had from here. So much ripe cherry, raspberry and floral character. Medium body, super-refined tannins and a long and flavorful finish. So much going on here. Better in 2021.Inc. VAT£403.24 -

The 2015 Barolo Bussia is fabulous. Rich and dramatic in scale, the 2015 is a total stunner. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, spice, coffee and leather develop in a Barolo endowed with tremendous vertical lift and pure power. The 2015 is silky, heady and beautifully textured from start to finish. There is so much to admire.Inc. VAT£559.24 -

Marco Parusso's 2016 Barolo Bussia brings together all the best elements of his style and year in a wine that is simply brilliant. Sweet floral notes, dark red fruit, mint, blood orange and spice infuse the 2016 with myriad layers of complexity. A bold, dramatic Barolo made from Rocche and Munie fruit, the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its best.Inc. VAT£729.37 -

Good full red. Deep, highly scented nose combines dried rose, smoke and tobacco. Silky, tactile and thick; offers an unusually lush texture and a compelling combination of red fruits and smoky oak. An expansive, very ripe wine with a long, mouthcoating aftertaste.Inc. VAT£1,725.89 -

The 2013 Barolo Mariondino is a large-scale Barolo with broad shoulders and a deep footprint. The wine opens carefully to dark fruit, spice, leather and moist chewing tobacco. The aromas are savory, penetrating and thick. This Barolo offers substantial textural richness and a firm tannic punch that makes it way too young to approach now. The wine is macerated on the skins and stems. Only prolonged cellar aging will break down the firm inner core it displays now.Inc. VAT£533.09 -
James Suckling (92)
A medium-bodied Barolo with pretty easygoing wild-strawberry and fine-tannin style. Compact and tight, this is tempting even now, but give it another year. Try from 2023.Inc. VAT£559.49 -
Vinous (93)
The 2013 Barolo Mosconi is the most masculine of these Barolos. A wine of weight and gravitas, the Mosconi offers notable power from start to finish. Black cherry, chocolate, dark spice and gravel fill out the wine's broad frame effortlessly. The whole clusters add a measure of aromatic nuance, but the Mosconi lacks some of the freshness of the best wines in this range. There is no shortage of pure power though, that much is evident.Inc. VAT£594.29 -
James Suckling (96)
Very exotic Parusso Barolo as always, with dried fruit, strawberries and tangerines. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a powerful, intense finish. This is really structured. Needs four or five years to soften. Try in 2025.Inc. VAT£241.24 -
Vinous (90)
The 2019 Barolo Perarmando is a very pretty, translucent wine. Crushed red berry fruit, kirsch, mint, orange peel and spice are all lacer together in this lifted, sculpted Barolo. There's terrific purity to the flavors. That said, the 2019 comes across as a touch light relative to most recent vintages, while the tannins are a bit severe.Inc. VAT£409.49
