Raymond Usseglio
About Domaine Raymond Usseglio
Arriving in the Rhône Valley in 1931, Francis Usseglio founded his winery in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 1948, which was eventually handed over to one of his two sons, Pierre. Raymond, his other son, founded Domaine Raymond Usseglio in 1963, choosing to bottle and sell his wines right from the start, a rather uncommon practice at that time. Given the later start, Domaine Raymond Usseglio has been somewhat overshadowed by its sibling Domaine but critics are quickly taking note of how Raymond Usseglio is rising towards parity, as detailed by Dunnuck and Parker’s astute observations.
“Readers looking for the next superstar estate in Châteauneuf du Pape and Côtes du Rhône need to get on Raymond Usseglio’s bandwagon ASAP as the quality here is equal to anything out there today. I still remember writing in 2016 how the quality was on the uptick, and there’s no better example than these latest 2018s and 2019s.”
Jeb Dunnuck
“There are two superb Usseglio estates in Châteauneuf du Pape, and this one, although somewhat in the shadow of the recent efforts of the Domaine Pierre Usseglio, should never to be discounted as the wines from Raymond Usseglio are top-notch and classic in style.”

Vinous (87)
Ruby-red. Aroma of red fruit liqueur. Sweet and nicely concentrated, with good volume but only modest nuance. Shows good freshness and fruit, but finishes with some youthfully tough tannins. Seems distinctly cleaner than a bottle of the '98 I tasted last year. However, my sample of the '99 Cuvee Imperiale was plagued by a raw wood quality that dried its finish.Inc. VAT£566.47 -

Glass-staining purple. Heady scents of spice- and floral-accented dark berries, cherry-vanilla, anise and incense, along with a smoky topnote. Lush and seamless on the palate, offering palate-staining blackberry, blueberry and floral pastille flavors. Silky tannins build on the endless finish, which leaves behind notes of blue fruit preserves, licorice and smoky Indian spices. Velvety tannins come on late but are quickly absorbed by this wine's lush, deeply concentrated fruit.Inc. VAT£880.34 -

Violets, spring flowers, cassis, plums, and incense notes all define the stunningly good 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Imperiale. Made from 100% Grenache from very old vines, it's full-bodied and powerful, yet also graceful, balanced and pure, with terrific freshness and purity. My money is on this flirting with perfection once bottled.Inc. VAT£323.09 -

Deep, spicy and fragrant, this is a very concentrated and elegant Chateauneuf-du-Pape with remarkably fine tannins and floral delicacy alongside its earthy primacy. Mainly produced from grenache vines planted in 1901 and 1902. From Demeter-certified biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.Inc. VAT£347.09 -
