    Ruinart

Ruinart is the oldest champagne house, established in 1729, inspired by Dom. Thierry Ruinart but founded by Nicolas Ruinart. The family has run the House for over two centuries. Chardonnay is their Champagne’s soul - expressed in their Blanc de Blancs. The signature for their entire range is typically bright, intense, elegant and slowly matured for an aromatic richness.

(full malo; 9 g/l dosage; LAH9T): Light yellow-gold. Smoky citrus and orchard fruits on the deeply perfumed, mineral-tinged nose. Offers broad, toasty orange and pear skin flavors with an undercurrent of dusty minerals. Picks up floral and ginger nuances with air, along with hints of iodine and tarragon. Rich yet lively blanc de blancs with powerful back-end lift and finishing grip.

The 1990 Dom Ruinart (original release) was also pretty, although it revealed a slightly flabby and unfocused personality compared to the more vibrant wines of the night.

    Vinous (97+)

The 2006 Dom Ruinart Blanc de Blancs Brut is simply fabulous. In most vintages, Dom Ruinart is a big, ample Champagne that shows the structure of the Montagne de Reims Chardonnay in the blend. The 2006 has plenty of textural resonance and richness, and yet I am also struck by its tension. Both bottles I tasted point to a Dom Ruinart that is quite a bit more polished and sophisticated than it often is at this stage.

The 2009 Dom Ruinart has been absolutely fabulous on two separate occasions. Chef de Caves Frédéric Panaïotis turned out a brilliant edition of this tête de cuvée that offers a compelling balance of richness and vibrancy. Citrus, mineral, spice and dried flowers are all beautifully delineated throughout. In 2009 Dom Ruinart has a bit less fruit from the Montagne de Reims and more from the Côte des Blancs (specifically Cramant, Avize, Chouilly and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) than has often been the case. This approach gives the wine more tension and steeliness than readers might expect in a vintage known for generally forthcoming Champagnes. I would not be in any rush to open the 2009, as it very clearly needs time. The only question is how much. Superb. (Originally published in May 2021)

    Vinous - Antonio Galloni (98)

The 2010 Dom Ruinart is every bit as magnificent as it has always been. This bottle, from the first disgorgement, is tremendous. I especially admire its explosive intensity. Citrus peel, flowers, white pepper, chalk and slate all stain the palate. Chef de Caves Frédéric Panaïotis turned out a masterpiece. The 2010 Dom Ruinart is quite simply one of the greatest wines made in Champagne over the last several decades. It's certainly one the finest young Champagnes I have ever tasted. Don't miss it!

Oyster shell and a stony minerality on the nose, with salted butter and fresh croissants. Hints of white truffle, vanilla, white chocolate and vanilla-bean custard. Creamy, yet racy and very bright, with lively acidity and a long, structured finish. 5.5g/L dosage. Drink or hold.

The 2007 Dom Ruinart Rosé is fabulous. The Rosé has all of the energy of the Blanc, with the extra richness that comes from the Pinot in the blend. Rose petal, mint, blood orange and cinnamon are some of the many aromas and flavors that are laced throughout. There is a feeling of translucence in the Rosé that is impossible to miss. I would cellar it for a few years. This is another magnificent wine from Chef de Caves Frédéric Panaïotis in his first vintage at Ruinart. Disgorged: February, 2018.

Delivers enticing notes of strawberry and cherry preserves, toasted walnut bread, pink grapefruit granita and elderflower that waltz across the palate on the finely detailed, silky mousse. Underscored by a minerally range of oyster shell, smoke and saline, this is rich and focused, yet seamlessly knit and graceful throughout. A bit reduced on the nose when first poured, so let this open in the glass -- try sipping it from a Burgundy glass to give it a little more air. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Disgorged July 2018. Drink now through 2034.
