2020 |
Arlaud Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2020 (1x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)Rich very deep purple. The nose shows nobility. I thought the Echezeaux was exciting but it almost looks clumsy alongside. A harmony of dark ripe cherries and some raspberry. The palate offers a little citrus, tangerine touch. This is magnificently Tasted: December 2021

Arlaud Chambolle-Musigny 2019 (3x75cl) Vinous (89-91)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes mainly from La Bussières, Les Herbues and two or three others. I love the delineation and precision here, very focused with a minerally undertow. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly peppery opening. You might misconstrue there being whole bunches thanks to the light peppery finish (there is nonw). It is a quality Village Cru from Arlaud that should give a decade pleasure of more.

Arlaud Chambolle-Musigny 2020 (3x75cl) Vinous (87-89)The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village showed a little reduction on the nose, but there were some quite intense red fruit underneath that should blossom once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly toasty entry, fine depth and acidity with a slightly chalky finish that just needs a little more persistence. I think this year, Arlaud’s Morey-Saint-Denis Village has the upper hand.

Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is very pure and intense on the nose, a melange of black and blueberry fruit infused with pressed violet petals. The oak here is seamlessly integrated. The palate is opulent on the entry with black plum and boysenberry jam. There is a subtle confit element to this Charmes-Chambertin with grippy tannins on the finish that delivers a subtle bitter/sappy edginess.

Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in 15% new oak, showed just a tiny morsel of reduction on the nose, that the concentration here was still tangible. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh and very precise. This has real class and verve, though it will benefit from several years in bottle.

Arlaud Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl) Vinous (93-95)The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is matured with 30% whole bunch and 20% new oak. The superb bouquet presents a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and blood orange aromas that blossom from the glass. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and finely judged acidity. Quite compact for a Clos de la Roche, with noticeable backbone on the finish. It will require several years in bottle but it should be worth the wait.

Arlaud Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combottes 2019 (1x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru really captures the complexity and intellectual capacity of this propitious Premier Cru with beautifully defined, mineral-driven black fruit, touches of freshly rolled tobacco developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, sweet and candied with blueberry and cassis notes towards the sensual finish. It is a powerful Aux Combottes that just needs to evolve a touch more restraint and Pinoté, though that will develop with cellaring.

Arlaud Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2019 (5x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is elegant and refined on the nose, a mixture of blackberry, sous-bois and a light sea spray aroma. It just needs to gel together and it should do during the remainder of its barrel maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Very Morey in style with a sense of conservatism and linearity on the white pepper-dashed finish, I appreciate its persistence in the mouth. Cellar this for 4-5 years.

Arlaud Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2020 (3x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)A delightful fresh glowing even mid purple. The bouquet is compelling, far from the deepest or headiest, but with a sense of finesse. The perfume grows steadily to add more volume. There is a magical balance in this wine between the sensuality and the freshness, a finesse in the tannins too. Tasted: December 2021

Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru 2006 (1x75cl)
In Bond: £2,798.00

2006 |
Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru 2006 (1x75cl) Burghound (96) It's as though the Clos de Bèze and Chambertin have switched places in 2006 as here the nose is positively kaleidoscopic with a huge range of aromas and spice elements along with a hint of menthol. There is excellent freshness and vibrancy to the pure, round, rich and focused full-bodied flavors that carry obvious muscle and minerality on the deep, powerful and hugely long finish. This is an extremely impressive effort and one of the finest wines of the vintage. Not surprisingly, this hasn't changed a great deal since my last review except that the length is now even more phenomenal and the supporting tannins are a bit more apparent. While it's true that the balance is so good that that this could be enjoyed now, it would be unfortunate to leave so much upside potential unrealized and thus I would advise waiting for at least 5 more years first though it should easily be capable of rewarding 8 to 10. Tasted several times since my original review with consistent notes in the sense that they have become progressively more positive.

2014 |
Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (1x150cl) Wine Advocate (97)Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Rousseau's 2014 Chambertin Grand Cru has a fruit-driven bouquet laden with black cherries, crushed strawberry, ink and a touch of bay leaf. As it aerates, the fruit seems to take more of a back seat and the terroir comes through. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very pure and elegant, iron fist/velvety glove and so forth. This is what a grand cru should be. Utterly seductive and captivating, its satin texture might lure you into opening a bottle too soon. Give it a decade to admire Rousseau at full flight. Tasted September 2017.

Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl) Vinous (98)The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has a very intense, brilliantly-defined bouquet with laser-like precision, incredibly focused and perfectly integrated oak. Less generous than Bichot's Chambertin at the moment though - this is biding its time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, insistent grip and plenty of freshness. Maybe just a little more confit in style than others. Still, a fabulous Chambertin that gains clarity and precision in the glass. Effortless. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2002 (1x75cl) Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-96)Deep, saturated red with ruby highlights. Pure, captivating aromas of blackberry, blueberry and spicy oak. Sappy and uncommonly sweet but not at all thick or heavy. Still a bit closed in the mouth but already shows compelling perfume. There's no sign of the 13.7% (natural) alcohol. Distinctly tighter and more powerful than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Finishes with superb lingering perfume. A great showing.

Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2005 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (96-98)The 2005 Chambertin Clos de Beze offers alluring aromas of licorice, mint, vanilla, plum paste, cherry preserves and rose petals, and seduces the palate with silky, incredibly refined texture and several octaves of fruit, herbal, floral and mineral notes, leading to a reverberative finish in which fruit pit and stony, chalky elements lend a sense of dark, weighty authority and an umami-like, meaty savor promotes uncontrollable salivation. No layering or mixing of metaphors can hope to do justice to the layering and concatenation of flavors on display.

2016 |
Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos-De-Beze Grand Cru 2016 (1x75cl) Wine Advocate (97)The 2016 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is showing brilliantly from bottle, unwinding with aeration to reveal a deep and brooding bouquet of plums, cassis and cherries mingled with notions of grilled meats, ceps, peonies and iodine. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with a muscular chassis of ripe tannin that's cloaked in a core of vibrant and concentrated fruit, concluding with a long and thrillingly carnal finish. It will be fascinating to compare this with the qualitatively similar but stylistically very different 2015 vintage when both wines have 20 years on the clock.

Armand Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St-Jacques 2004 (6x75cl) Burghound (92)An equally fresh if perhaps not quite as ripe nose of red fruit and mineral-infused aromas of surpassing complexity introduce delicious, intense and slightly firmer medium full flavors that culminate in a subtly persistent finish. This is refined and exceptionally pure and while it is on the lighter side, the focus, detail and precision is extremely impressive. Like the Ruchottes, this trades on elegance and refinement yet there is no lack of flavor authority despite the absence of raw size and weight.

Arnoux-Lachaux Chambolle-Musigny 2019 (6x75cl) Vinous (89)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village shows the stems a little more than the Nuits Saint-Georges and will require longer to assimilate. There is quite an attractive tertiary aspect to this Chambolle, hints of brown spices and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, quite fresh with a fine acidity, for me, just missing a little density and grip towards the finish.

Ausone 2000 (6x75cl) Wine Advocate (98+)Two bottles were badly corked, which is certainly a scary situation for a wine where only 1,000 or so cases were produced. However, a third bottle was magical and just short of perfection. Its saturated purple color was followed by a surprisingly more evolved and open wine than I had written in my tasting note in 2003, where I predicted maturity between 2020 and 2075. This wine displays wonderful, sweet tannin and a big, sweet kiss of truffle, crushed rock, blueberry, blackberry, and licorice. Extremely rich, full-bodied, with astonishing power, precision, and delicacy, this is a sumptuous wine that should age well for 50-60 years, but in the case of the one bottle out of three that was not corked, it seemed far more evolved and forward than I suggested in my write-up in 2003.
