Wine Advocate (93-95)

When I tasted it, the 2016 Aalto had already been blended and taken out of the barrels, waiting to be bottled in a couple of weeks. It's still young and tender, with peachy aromas, a little creamy and with a soft palate where the tannins are fine-grained. In 2016, they used more vineyards, grapes from their own plots and others purchased from suppliers. They expect to fill some 280,000 bottles in late June 2018. 2016 was a higher-yielding year that provided fresh and balanced wines. It should age nicely. Javier Zaccagnini has left the Aalto project to focus on his solo project Sei Solo. So, this time I tasted the wine with Mariano García.

Aalto Ribera Del Duero 2017 (1x300cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2017 Aalto was a surprise for the vintage. They had to select the grapes from their own vineyards, and they produced less wine. It feels a little lighter and fresher, more approachable at this point in time. The oak also seems to be more integrated. It's a very drinkable Aalto in its style. They only used some 20% new oak and possibly did a softer vinification. It's approachable now, but it should also develop nicely in bottle, as the year had more acidity. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.

2018

Aalto Ribera Del Duero 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2018 Aalto reflects the cooler conditions of the year, with a more austere profile, subtle aromas and a harmonious palate. This is a classic example of modern, ripe and well-oaked Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, which this year feels creamy, juicy and balanced. This follows the path of 2017 with integrated oak (they used only around 20% new oak) and a lively palate in a more drinkable and approachable style. They added some new vineyards from the zone of Boada where the soils are red and the wines bring freshness and lots of fruit. The wine had a shorter maceration with the skins and a softer vinification. This is finer and more balanced, with finesse but still very much recognizable as Aalto. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020. They have a new white first produced in 2019 and a non-vintage red blend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the winery. They are also going to release small lots of library releases. The 2018s reflect the cooler year and show more integrated oak, following the path of the 2017.

Aalto Ribera del Duero 20th Anniversary Limited Edition NV (1x300cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The NV XX Aniversario is a blend of vintages 2016, 2017 and 2018 bottled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the winery and is only sold in three-liter bottles in a special box. So, it is really a collector's item showcasing the house style. It's a barrel selection of Tempranillo from different villages and different vintages showcasing the house style—spicy and smoky, with ripe red and black fruit, a round palate and soft mouthfeel, and it's nicely integrated with abundant powdery tannins and some finesse. These are wines for the long term, and this shows more oak than the 2018s. 450 three-liter bottles were produced. They have a new white first produced in 2019 and a non-vintage red blend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the winery. They are also going to release small lots of library releases. Dark ruby. Strongly perfumed scents of exotic cherry-cola, blackberry, vanilla and Asian spices. Weighty but focused dark fruit flavors offer striking clarity and palate-staining concentration, with soft tannins building on the close. The cola quality lingers on the long, sweet finish. This wonderfully balances richness and vivacity.

Wine Advocate (98)

The 2005 Aalto PS is 100% Tinto Fino from vineyards over 60 years of age. It was aged for 32 months in 70% new French oak. Saturated in appearance, the wine offers up notes of pain grille, balsamic, crushed stone, floral notes, and wild black fruits. Exceptionally powerful, focused, and beautifully proportioned, this full-bodied wine is dense, rich, and structured for the long haul. Give this super-long, impressive effort a decade in the cellar and drink it from 2018 to 2040. Patient purchasers will be well rewarded.

Aalto Ribera del Duero PS 2013 (1x500cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2013 Aalto PS was bottled at the same time as the regular 2013 Aalto, which means less time in oak (for this limited cuvée all the barrels were new) and the vintage was a little lighter and had higher acidity. They also had to do a more careful sorting, which resulted in less wine. The nose is subtler and more balanced and integrated. The bottled wine has less alcohol than previous years. The fresher vintages definitively take the oak in a different way and the wood feels better integrated; there are violets, bright cherries and fresher fruit than in other vintages, showing more of the character of the place and the grape. It's very open, hedonistic, aromatic and showy. It's very young and accessible, but I'd wait a little to get the edges nicely polished by the bottle. It should have a long life ahead and a nice development. A very nice vintage of PS, but don't get me wrong, it's still in its generous and well-oaked style. 16,000 bottles, a shorter vintage, were filled in July 2015.

Aalto Ribera del Duero PS 2014 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2014 PS aged in new oak barrels for a little bit shorter than in the past, some 18 months now. It's pure Tempranillo from selected plots of old, head-pruned vines. It's very obviously young and very oaky, not yet ready and in need of some time in bottle to be able to integrate all the oak that it currently shows. The nose is very smoky, with plenty of sweet spices, hints of smoked bacon and cereals of roasted corn. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with pungent oak-related flavors and a dusty texture with abundant tannins. It needs a couple of years in bottle in the classical PS style, a powerful wine destined to be consumed with powerful food and ideal for a winter stew. Very good in its style. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2016. Aalto has reduced the oak in its wines, as they saw that the latest vintages had polished tannins and Mariano García decided the wines needed less time in barrel, while at the same time it helped to keep the freshness in bottle. They are still modern and generously oaked Ribera del Duero reds that are a great commercial success. 2014 is a ripe and powerful vintage that has good freshness. A balanced year. These are wines with a marked and specific character, for fans of the style.

Dark violet color. Impressively complex black and blue fruit, floral and oak spice qualities on the nose; smoky mineral and vanilla flourishes emerge as the wine stretches out. Concentrated and sweet yet lively as well, offering palate-staining boysenberry and cherry cola flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Shows serious depth of flavor but comes off graceful, with polished tannins framing an impressively long, penetrating and focused finish.

Aalto Ribera del Duero PS 2017 (1x300cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

I saw more ripeness and a higher impact of the élevage in the 2017 PS compared with the regular Aalto. The year was quite challenging, and they had less grapes but more or less from the same villages: La Aguilera, La Horra, Baños... It's spicy, smoky and toasty, very exuberant and showy, ripe and powerful. The wine went through malolactic in oak and matured in new barriques until bottling. There are plenty of tannins and oak-related flavors. This has a very specific style: ripe, powerful and generously oaked. For fans of the style. Some 30,000 bottles produced. Wine Advocate (95)

The 2018 PS follows the style of previous bottlings of this wine, selecting plots from La Horra, La Aguilera, Baños and Moradillo, looking for a similar profile of soils and the style of the wine. This is an exuberant, ripe and generously oaked Tempranillo that was matured in new oak barrels for 19 months. It's from a generous crop that was harvested between the 24th of September and the 19th of October, a slow and late harvest of fully ripe grapes that developed plenty of aromas and flavors. It was also a cooler year. This is a long-distance runner. Today, the 2018 Aalto is more approachable and shows better balance. 40,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020. Abadia Retuerta El Campanario 1996 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (93)

The 100% Tempranillo 1996 Cuvee Campanario represents a blend of the finest parcels of Tempranillo. The wine was aged in 100% new French Limousin oak for 16 months, then bottled without filtration. It reveals a saturated purple color, and is more backward both aromatically and on the palate, as well as more impressive. The wine's bouquet falls in the black fruit spectrum of aromas - blackberries, black raspberries, and overripe cherries. Full-bodied and tightly-knit, with intriguing mineral notes, this powerful, rich, layered wine could easily pass for a top-class Bordeaux in a blind tasting. The result of 28 days of maceration, the high tannin is sweet and well-integrated in the wine's framework. However, I would not recommend drinking this offering for 2-3 more years. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020. Congratulations are in order for this impressive new winery that is already turning out wines of exceptional quality.

Abadia Retuerta Pago Negralada 2016 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94)

Perhaps the finest vintage produced to date of their iconic Tempranillo is the 2016 Pago Negralada, which has a mixture of red and black fruit, some spices and firm but fine-grained tannins that give it tension and a chalky sensation in the texture. It's tasty and balanced, with good ripeness and freshness, medium to full-bodied, with stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle. I was surprised to see it has 15% alcohol, as it is very well disguised. 9,769 bottles, 611 magnums and 40 double magnums produced from 35 barrels. It was bottled in May 2018. 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of Abadía Retuerta, who came out with their seminal 1996s at the end of the century, and that somehow changed the view many had about the region just outside the boundaries of Ribera del Duero (part of their vineyards are inside the appellation, as the limit crosses the property). They have produced a 20th-anniversary red and released a white Cuvée Palomar produced mostly with Godello grapes and a red Cuvée Palomar in magnum to celebrate their anniversary. In the meantime, they fermented the first wine from the recovered ancient vineyard they found in 2007, which they have been recovering since, and they have filed the documentation to request the classification as Vino de Pago, the single-vineyard appellation that really makes sense in places like Abadía Retuerta. They now produce some 500,000 bottles from their 192 hectares of vineyards that are divided in 54 different plots, and they have conducted multiple studies of climate change—behavior of the plants and micro-vinifications of different plots—lead by the team of chief winemaker Ángel Anocíbar and consultant Pascal Delbeck. They surely have more knowledge of their vineyards than the majority of wineries in the zone.

Abadia Retuerta PV Petit Verdot 2015 (1x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The real surprise of the tasting, the 2015 Petit Verdot is truly spectacular in this warm year, possibly the best bottling of this varietal they have done so far. It is open, expressive and elegant, with an unusually perfumed nose showing aromas of dry flowers, citrus peel and oriental spices. It has none of the roasted notes the variety can sometimes deliver, and I would have difficulties naming the variety if I tasted it blind. The palate is medium to full-bodied with very fine tannins and great harmony; this is elegant, hiding its power. It has tremendous freshness. It seems like the variety thrives in years like 2015—it's expressive, tasty and very long. This is scarce, and scarcity is reflected in the price. 3,245 bottles, 90 magnums and 20 double magnums were filled in May 2017 from 12 barrels. A monumental bottle of Petit Verdot. 2015 was a warm year, but the end of the summer was milder, which is what made the difference with the majority of warm vintages, and the wines are nicely balanced. As for 2017 was also very warm and was marked by frost, but they were nearly untouched.

It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured for 15 months in barrels, half of them 500-liter ones and 30% of them new. Castro Ventosa Valtuille Cepas Centenarias 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98)

The 2019 Valtuille Cepas Centenarias comes from a single plot of ancient vines that could qualify as Vino de Paraje and in the future as Vino de Viña, but they are never going to do it because it's their traditional name and label and one of the most consistent wines from the winery. It is made with field blend with lots of different grapes on clay and sand soils. It fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts with a long 60-day maceration and matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels (but, in the future, they might move to oval oak foudres) for one year. It has the violets and the perfume from the 2018 vintage but with more dimension, more layers and depth. A stellar performance in 2019 (again!). 3,500 bottles produced, what the plot delivered. Castro Ventosa Valtuille Rapolao 2019 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2019 Valtuille El Rapolao, now a Vino de Paraje, fermented with 100% full clusters with a long maceration and matured in well-seasoned, neutral 500-liter oak barrels (which might be eight years old now), the modus operandi for all of the single-vineyard reds. It's perfumed and heady, as it comes from a plot that also has some fruit trees, in a v-shape, planted along with some 8% Malvasía grapes that have been added since 2018 and have given it finesse. It's more exuberant on the nose, something that seems to define this wine that is quite unique and different from its siblings. It's medium-bodied with around 13% alcohol; winemaker César Márquez feels that when these wines are riper than 13.5% they are too rustic. 1,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2020.

Wine Advocate (94)

The first vintage to have the new official category on the label is the 2019 Valtuille Vino de Villa, and it's a barrel selection of barrels from the centenary vines and Villegas, El Val and some La Rata, three zones they like. This is the new focus of the winery; it's a very serious red, with volume and depth. It fermented in oak vats with 40% full clusters with the field blend and matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels. It has the grainy mouthfeel from the stems. It has more structure and ripeness but with great balance and moderate alcohol, really representing the village and the year. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

César Márquez El Rapolao 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2018 El Rapolao was produced with the grapes from the adjacent plot to the one from Castro Ventosa. It has maybe 5% white grapes and a faint reductive character—a flinty or gun powder note, turning into sesame seeds á la Coche-Dury with time—that the vineyard can have, with a lot less alcohol (13%) and is lighter and more ethereal and elegant. This is floral, clean and fresh, fulfilling the fresher and more elegant style of the 2018s. It follows the style of 2016, perhaps with a touch more depth and complexity, and it is more elegant, with more refined tannins and a chalky sensation. 984 bottles were filled in December 2019.

César Márquez Perez La Salvación Godello 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2018 La Salvación is the only white produced by César Márquez in his personal project. It's pure Godello from two plots—one plot in Arganza regrafted from old Mencía to Godello 12 years ago and some 15% to 20% from another plot in Villafranca where there are some Godello old vines in between the Mencía. The destemmed grapes fermented and matured in 500-liter oak barrels, where the wine rested with the lees without bâtonnage for around one year. The wine was a little closed and shy and needed some time to take off—it's subtle, elegant and insinuating. In the future, he might do a single-vineyard white once he finds the right plot. The palate is serious and soil-driven, tasty, almost salty, with very focused flavors. 2018 delivered a good crop, and 1,358 bottles were produced. Each vintage has been different (2015 had flor, 2016 was sharp, and 2017 was a little more exuberant), and this is the most serous and complete to date. It should age nicely in bottle.

This year, it comes from a higher-altitude plot (he now works with five separate plots in the paraje, but the rest go to the Parajes bottling) and in a vineyard with some white grapes. It fermented with full clusters and a longer maceration, resulting in a wine with less color and more tension. If Bierzo is somewhere between the Northern Rhône and Burgundy, this one gravitates more toward Burgundy. It's floral and textured, with a fine thread, very fine tannins and the sapidity of the limestone, very tasty. It's a more ethereal version of 2017. It matured in a well-seasoned, neutral 600-liter oak vat for one year. Only 721 bottles were filled in December 2019.

César Márquez Sufreiral Montana 2018 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2018 Sufreiral is one of the very few reds from limestone soils from Bierzo.
