Further northeast in France, in the region of Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Domaine Trimbach, and Domaine Weinbach produce stunning white wines from varietals like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. These wines display remarkable depth, aromatic complexity, and a balance between sweetness and acidity, reflecting the region's unique microclimates and granite-rich soils.

In Bordeaux, the region of Graves is renowned for its white wines, particularly those crafted from the classic grape varieties of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément, and Domaine de Chevalier are esteemed vineyards that produce rich and age-worthy white Bordeaux wines. These wines exhibit a beautiful interplay of tropical fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a touch of toasty oak.

Finally, in the Rhône Valley, the appellation of Condrieu shines as a beacon of excellence in Viognier production. Wine Advocate (92)

The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot was reduced from sixty to twenty-six barrels because of the frost. Often cited as one of the domaine’s best crus, it boasts one of the most intense aromatics from the domaine this year with scents of white peach, walnut oil, linseed and just a slight petrol-like aroma in the background. The palate is well balanced but certainly rich and powerful, sporting an almost viscous texture and a gorgeous, honeyed finish that caresses the mouth. I love the depth and drive of this Virondot, a great success for winemaker Sabine Morey in a challenging vintage.

The Pape Clement 2016 Blanc is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 36% Sémillon, 9% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Muscadelle. It leaps from the glass with gregarious scents of ripe peaches, fresh grapefruit and key lime pie plus touches of cedar, honeysuckle and toast. Medium-bodied, the palate offers fantastic precision and depth, with layers of citrus and stone fruit flavors supported by a racy line of freshness, finishing very long.

  • Patrick Javillier Bourgogne Cuvee des Forgets Blanc 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87)

(modest frost losses here): Light yellow-straw color. More minerals and menthol than primary fruit on the nose. Stone fruit and more exotic tropical fruit flavors began a bit lean but turned creamier with aeration. This unusually nuanced Bourgogne Blanc finishes with good subtle length.

  • Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bourgogne Blanc 2016 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (85)

Produced largely from second-generation grapes, the 2016 Bourgogne Chardonnay is a nice wine in a challenging vintage, but it's an appreciable step behind other recent vintages. The wine offers up fragrant aromas of peach, citrus pith and struck match, followed by a bright, light to medium-bodied palate with moderate texture and tangy acids. Right now, it's a little angular, but I expect it to round out in bottle.

Pierre-Yves Colin's 2016 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune En Creuzilly is a success, offering up a pretty bouquet of smoky peaches, beeswax and pastry cream. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, bright and elegantly glossy, with ripe acids and a delicate, fine-boned profile. It's sure to be a great value.

  • Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2016 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

(about 50% frost; made from very old, low-yielding vines): Bright, light yellow-green. Pungently mineral scents of lime zest, white flowers, crushed rock, anise, caraway seed and mint. At once vibrant and thick, with flavors of underripe pineapple and grapefruit pith displaying terrific energy and lift. This beauty expanded with air to reveal a silkier texture, outstanding purity and a captivating crushed-chalk dustiness. Incidentally, Pierre-Yves Colin told me that he's currently enjoying white wines from his 2003 through 2006 vintages at home--but nothing younger than that.

  • Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru les Charmes 2016 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (90-93)

(Colin has just a single one-year-old 500-liter barrel of this juice): Ripe but very reticent nose hints at green apple. Tactile, peppery, dry and classic, conveying a dusty impression of extract. Tight, primary flavors of peach and white peach show a savory, sappy quality. Here's a young 2016 that might be compared to a 2010. This still needs further élevage to stretch out, and lose some of its CO2.

  • Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly 2016 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (91+)

Bright, green-tinged yellow. Aromas of lime, ginger and mint call to mind a mini-Chevalier-Montrachet. Juicy, pure and tightly wound, showing none of the exotic character of the Chatenière. This very concentrated, dry, linear wine finishes with terrific slowly unfolding length and precision--a bit austere today but not hard. Rémilly is just over the hill from Chevalier-Montrachet, so it's no coincidence that this is an outperformer for its appellation. Only 50% frost here, noted Pierre-Yves Colin. Lay this one down.

  • Ponsot Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

(bottled in December; a tiny crop from vines on Pernand's border with Aloxe): Pale yellow, a bit lighter than the Monts Luisants. Very pure aromas of citrus fruits, white peach and crushed stone. A very fresh, pristine style that's rather closed and backward following the bottling but not hard or austere. This wine fills the mouth without giving any impression of weightiness or overripeness. Most impressive today on the very long, rising, mineral-tinged finish, which leaves behind a salty character.
