Rich and opulent on the nose, with yellow peach and honeycomb. Very full bodied, with that immediate internal sweet ripeness of fruit that often marks out this cuvée. Good balancing acidity here, with real intensity of concentrated sappy fruits. Huge length, impressive power and a great mineral expression. It coats the mouth, and somehow stays fresh despite its richness. Old vine Marsanne (over 70 years old) grown on the pebbly, sand and clay soils of the lieu-dit Les Murets. 80% is matured in demi-muid for 11 months, 15% new oak, and the rest in stainless steel. 2017 is an exceptional year for de l'Orée.

As in 2016, my favorite of the white parcel selections this year is the 2017 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc (231 cases produced), as it perfectly balances richness and power with refinement and structure. Toasted brioche and citrus marmalade, honey and truffle notes deliver sheer full-bodied, mouth-filling decadence, supported by austere notes of crushed granite, zesty grapefruit rind and cooling brine. Inscrutable though it was last year, the 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Combettes is showing very well today, bursting with aromas of yellow orchard fruit, almond paste, dried white flowers and wet stones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and tensile, with good structure and concentration.

Vivid straw-yellow. Highly perfumed citrus and orchard fruit and floral qualities on the mineral-accented nose. Shows excellent concentration as well as vivacity, offering palate-staining pear, Meyer lemon and brioche flavors that stretch out steadily with air. The floral and mineral elements return emphatically on the intense, sharply focused finish, which lingers with serious persistence.

The phrase 'ripe yet precise' encapsulates the 2017 Brézé, Clos Rougeard's single and singular, dry white wine. It has two different fruit spectrums - there's citrus fruit from the north-facing vines and a later picked, riper, almost tropical, cooked pineapple character. Fermented in barrel, there are oak-derived vanilla flavors that join the fruit while a whiff of match stick indicates a lightly reductive character that needs air. It is round yet retains a bright, racy freshness that you often see in Brézé whites. Focused and fine, this has the substance and line to evolve gracefully.

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseigneres comes from a single hectare of vines planted in the 1950s. I often feel their Puligny is overlooked simply for the crime of not being "Meursault." The bouquet is very precise and focused, offering Golden Delicious apple, honeysuckle and light fennel scents, plus faint orange blossom aromas. The palate is powerful and intense with a fine bead of acidity, hints of praline infusing the slightly peachy fruit, and then coheres beautifully toward the persistent finish. This is simply an outstanding Puligny-Montrachet that effortlessly punches at Premier Cru level.

Burghound (91-94)

Sweet Spot Outstanding. Hints of spice and petrol add breadth to the ripe and mildly exotic aromas of white peach, mandarin orange and discreet wood influence. The bigger and richer medium weight plus flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while displaying excellent depth and drive on the focused and powerful finish. Impressive.

The 2017 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed some reduction on the nose, but there is impressive delineation and focus and real mineralité here. It just needs bottle age. The palate is very well balanced, a live wire of acidity, tensile and mineral-driven with a judicious touch of spice toward the persistent finish. This is very classy and persistent, translating the terroir with style, a wine that flirts with profundity. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is a classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of lemon oil, citrus blossom, green apple, mandarin and beeswax, subtly framed by new oak. Youthfully reserved today, its almost understated elegance conceals impressive reserved of structure and extract.

(25% new oak): Bright yellow. A touch of reduction but still a captivating fruitiness to the aromas and flavors of lemon, lime and crushed stone. Rich, savory, concentrated wine with a restrained sweetness and enlivening underlying minerality. More tactile, pliant and deep than the Poruzots. This silky, edge-free wine finishes classically dry and long, with lovely lemony lift and grip.

The 2017 Meursault St. Christophe is a blend of Les Petits Charrons, Narvaux and Les Tastet. It has a precise and quite attractive bouquet, the 20% new oak (half in large 600-litre barrels) is nicely integrated and imparts subtle brioche aromas. The palate is well balanced with a touch of orange cordial on the entry. There is a fine bead of acidity here with a lightly spiced finish, just a tang of lemongrass enlivening the aftertaste. Very fine at this level.

The 2017 Doisy-Daëne is so compelling. Rich and ample in the glass, the 2017 just blossoms with a bit of time. Candied apricot, exotic white flowers, mint, hazelnut and chamomile notes confer richness. The 2017 is deep, powerful and wonderfully resonant from start to finish. Moreover, it has very few peers in this vintage, one of them being the top-of-the line L'Extravagant.

This is really powerful and structured with superb muscle and phenolic tension. Yet, it’s formed and polished, layered and dense. Full-bodied, but energetic and focused. Vibrant acidity. Goes on for minutes. Citrus, stone, straw, salt and chalk. Incredible. Try after 2023.
