  • Jean Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Argillas 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (90)

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has a little more horsepower behind it on the nose with dark berry fruit, hints of bay leaf and black tea. Fine delineation, although there is a tad more oak to be assimilated. Maybe a hint of Brettanomyces? The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity that cuts through the mainly black fruit. Good tension with blood orange notes emerging towards the finish, which shows fine depth, though maybe just missing a little soul. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

  • Jean Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Argillas 2023 (6x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2023 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Argillats 1er Cru has a clean and transparent bouquet with lifted red berry fruit notes laced with sous-bois scents. It's quite Vosne-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied, poised and focused with a light crunchiness, fine mineralité and another harmonious finish. This is excellent.

    Vinous (92-94)

Matured in around 40% new oak, the 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes has a very controlled, focused bouquet of raspberry and bilberry fruit, beautifully defined and very terroir-expressive. The palate is well balanced and stylistically equidistant between Nuits Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanée, betraying its geographical location. • Jean Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Bas de Combe 2023 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)

Vivacious mid ruby, with a greater density of fruit on the nose, mainly raspberry, at just the right degree of ripeness. As always, this is the most complete of the Tardy village wines with both muscle and finesse, and the longest finish. The upper part seems to Guillaume to reflect the soil of Aux Boudots above, while the lower part has more clay. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.
  • Jean Tardy Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Vigneux 2015 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

Moderately saturated dark red. A bit lower-pitched than the Chambolle, with liqueur-like berry aromas complicated by mocha and earth notes. Ripe, plush and sweet, conveying more weight and texture but less energy and definition than the Chambolle, with its red and darker berry flavors complemented by suggestion of coffee. Boasts good material but could use a bit more nuance and grip. The present but initially very supple tannins turn dustier with air. This wine is the lowest in acidity of the 2015s I tasted chez Tardy, at 3.5 grams per liter; most of the other '15s are around 3.8, with the Echézeaux at 3.9.
  • Jean Tardy Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Vigneux 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Vigneux is well-defined and focused on the nose: dark cherry and plummy fruit, hints of pressed violets emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins, fine acidity, quite firm and uncompromising on the finish where I seek a touch more elegance and tension.

  • Jean-Claude Bachelet Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the six rows owned by the domaine that usually yield two barrels, raised this year in a single 456-liter barrel that the Bachelets have been employing since the 2017 vintage, as they find it imparts greater purity than the single-barrel size. This has a very precise bouquet, taut and focused with scents of orange blossom and pressed yellow flowers; great intensity here. The palate is very intense, the oak nicely integrated and displaying a keen line of acidity. The oak turns a little more dominant toward the finish, as you would expect, though it is in proportion to the fruit and there is a lovely nuttiness/smokiness conveyed by the persistent finish. This is an excellent Bienvenue but it will deserve cellaring for several years.
  • Jean-Claude Bachelet Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2020 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2020 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a crisp, focused bouquet, clean and precise and gaining in intensity with every swirl of the glass. This means business! The medium-bodied palate delivers very pure citrus fruit laced with orange zest, grilled hazelnut and pine nuts. Yes, this is quite Meursault-like in style, but undeniably there is impressive precision and energy coiled up on persistent finish. This is a superb Bienvenue, one of the best that I tried from this Grand Cru. Just one 456-liter barrel produced.

    Wine Advocate (92+)

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Aubues is terrific, unwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, white flowers, hazelnuts, freshly baked bread and matchstick. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and suave, it's layered and concentrated, with a dense core of fruit, racy acids and a long, mineral finish. As readers may remember, this derives from an optimally situated enclave within Les Enceignères.

Mid yellow. Good fruit concentration as the vines are older, 60-70 years, and it really shows. Plenty of tension, less sunny though the fruit is attractively ripe. Very good grip here, to confirm the quality. Drink from 2027-2031.

  • Jean-Claude Bessin Chablis 1er Cru Forets 2022 (1x75cl)

Bessin-Tremblay’s 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forêt—a wine that in less-favorable years such as 2021 and 2024 becomes an ingredient in Montmains bottling—has turned out nicely. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of fresh hazelnuts, acacia, fennel and citrus peel, it’s medium to full-bodied, intense and crisp, with tangy acidity and a long, sapid finish. Chablis purists will enjoy comparing this with Montmains.

    Wine Advocate (94)

Bessin-Tremblay’s 2022 Chablis 1er Cru La Forêt—a wine that in less-favorable years such as 2021 and 2024 becomes an ingredient in Montmains bottling—has turned out nicely. Opening in the glass to reveal notes of fresh hazelnuts, acacia, fennel and citrus peel, it’s medium to full-bodied, intense and crisp, with tangy acidity and a long, sapid finish. Chablis purists will enjoy comparing this with Montmains.
