The 2019 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from 0.14-hectare of vine. It has a well defined and more mineral driven bouquet compared to the Champans, the 50% new oak lending a little sheen. The 2021 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru was reduced to a single barrel for the first time ever. It does not quite have the complexity or terroir expression of the Champans on the nose, a little stoic and distant. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit and fine acidity, plus a healthy sprinkling of white pepper and sage towards the persistent finish. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, lithe tannin. I adore the harmony and precision of this Fremiets, not a powerful or flamboyant Volnay, but just Pinot Noir shimmering on the tongue.
