France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Vinous (90-92)
Medium red. Less fruity and more medicinal on the nose than the Vaucrains, offering complex scents of dark raspberry, dried flowers, mocha and earth. Then plush, silky and fine-grained on the palate, offering lovely floral lift to its raspberry fruit. The firm tannins turn a touch dry with air. (This cuvée is not vinified by Jadot.)Inc. Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a classy bouquet of vibrant red berry fruit, sous-bois and brown spice aromas that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. A fine-boned, focused Les Saint-Georges with admirable precision and mineralité on the finish. This is a step up from the Les Vaucrains. Excellent.Inc. VAT£676.84 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru is precocious on the nose, the upfront, bold macerated small cherries mingling with raspberry jam and elderberry. The palate is all about texture, velvety smooth and very plush, but at the moment the oak completely covers the terroir expression, and I would like to see more complexity and tension on the finish. More terroir needs to come through.Inc. VAT£492.29 -

Vinous (86-88)
The 2018 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre 1er Cru has a glossy, high-toned bouquet of toasty red fruit that misses the elegance found in some of Jadot’s Savignys. The fleshy palate is medium-bodied with a pastille-like entry and an almost corpulent finish, although I find it a little monotone compared to its peers.Inc. VAT£259.24 -

Pale to mid yellow. This time there are some floral notes to the bouquet, good acidity, a little more oak, lightly buttery, but a lovely balance with some intensity on the mineral side. Tasted: November 2021Inc. VAT£416.44 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (89-91)
The 2023 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre 1er Cru is actually a step up from the preceding pair of Savigny's, with more precision, finely assimilated oak and a subtle pressed flower element emerging with aeration. This articulates its limestone soil. The palate is well balanced as vibrant, citrus-fresh red fruit laced with orange peel leads to a nicely controlled and quite elegant finish. An affordable introduction to the 2023 Burgundy vintage? Step this way.Expected Price Range£145 - £177 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)
The 2022 Pernand-Vergelesses Clos de la Croix de Pierre has more detail and terroir expression than the Combottes: well-defined with crushed stone and dried yellow flowers complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is well-balanced with a waxy texture. A dash of white pepper enlivens this Pernand, which fans out nicely on the finish. One of my picks from Jadot's whites this year.Inc. VAT£221.89 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-93)
5 Star Wine. Fresh mid lemon. A little bit of oak joins the fruit on the nose, and there is a floral element too. Then the palate offers the limestone pebble effect. Vinous (91+)
Bright medium red. Floral and peppery high notes to the aromas of red berries, medicinal red cherry, iron and herbs. Offers very good density and a fine-grained texture, showing a subtle sweetness to its red berry, spice and menthol flavors. Lovely inner-mouth definition and lift here: this wine really showcases the raciness of the vintage. This juicy, fruity but also minerally Rugiens finishes with a very fine dusting of tannins that reach the front teeth and attractive floral lift. Still a baby.Inc. VAT£441.49 -

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a clean and precise bouquet with beautifully defined citrus fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is well balanced with good depth and grip, slightly waxy in style, fine acidity with touches of tangerine and orange pith towards the finish. Pale, bright yellow. White peach, menthol and white pepper on the nose, plus a touch of vanillin oak. A tight, subdued Folatières with penetrating rocky minerality; not a floral style. Very backward but has the tactile salty extract to age. Very concentrated and long on the aftertaste. The vines are in the top of the cru, barely 40 meters from Jadot's Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles, notes Barnier.Inc. VAT£133.45 -
Vinous (93)
The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is well defined on the nose, fresh and taut, with an abiding sense of purity and delineation. Joyous aromatics! The palate is crisp on the entry and well balanced, although this is the one Folatières where I find the oak impedes and rather occludes the terroir, rendering it unnecessarily generic compared to its peers, though the creaminess is seductive. The success of this wine depends on how well it can eat up that oak, and given its melioration in glass, my score reflects my optimism. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.Inc. VAT£625.24 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
5 Star Wine. There will be no En la Richarde Folatières from Héritiers Louis Jadot this year, but this bottling is superb. A little more toastiness on the nose. This builds beautifully to the back of the palate, showing an excellent backbone with just the right elegance of minerality. Really good. Bravo Drink from 2026-2033. Tasted: October 2022Inc. VAT£486.36 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)
(5 Star Wine) Mid lemon yellow, with a concentrated bouquet that has less immediate charm than the Clos de la Garenne. However, there is significant weight on the palate, some yellow plums, while the acidity has an attractive mineral touch. My conclusion is that this Folatières is just very backward. Everything is there to make a great wine, and In the end the more exciting wine of two excellent Pulignys. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: October 2023.Inc. VAT£814.32 -

The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru has a candied patisserie- and vanilla-scented bouquet that is very seductive if a little oaky at the moment, though that should be absorbed with time. The palate is well balanced with a marine influence on the entry. A very saline Les Folatières with much more persistence on the finish compared to the Clos de la Garenne, this is promising (and also one of the only whites from Jadot around 14% abv).Inc. From the southern side of this large premier cru, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Maison Louis Jadot) offers up appealing aromas of plums, pomegranate, espresso roast, raw cocoa and spices. The 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Domaine Louis Jadot) is a particular success this year, offering up notes of sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit mingled with notions of anise and other spices. The 2021 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a very attractive, pure bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, wilted rose petal and a touch of undergrowth that becomes increasingly floral with aeration. Impressive delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins. Sensual and supple, there are no hard edges here, and the finish seems to glide. This will be tempting young, but it has the substance to age.Inc. VAT£460.32
