France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

(6x75cl) 2013Vinous (92+)
Healthy deep red. Very pure aromas of crushed dark berries, minerals and bitter chocolate. Juicy, tight and penetrating, conveying terrific energy and cut to its flavors of dark berries, licorice and herbs. Quite backward today, even austere, but built to age. Jean-Nicolas Méo does not normally vinify with stems but he made this wine with 10% whole clusters.Inc. VAT£1,380.80 -
(3x150cl) 2015Vinous (94)
Healthy dark red. Pure but reticent aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and violet. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, displaying terrific energy to its sappy flavors of blackberry, licorice and violet. Conveys an impression of strong acidity for the year, which the inclusion of some of the stems no doubt amplifies. Beautifully balanced Nuits-Saint-Georges with a firm tannic spine and lingering salty minerality. I'm not sure I would have identified this wine as a 2015.Inc. VAT£2,345.52 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru needed a lot of aeration before it finally graced me with its presence. There is no stem addition in this vintage as there has been in previous years. It has a very well-defined bouquet even though it feels "aloof" at the moment, presenting sous-bois-infused black fruit and traces of iodine. The palate is well balanced with a slightly lactic, licorice-tinged entry. A precocious Les Boudots in the making. There is firm structure, good grip and a countervailing sorbet-like zip on the finish. This has all the components of a very fine Nuits Saint-Georges, but it will require cellaring.Inc. VAT£1,218.26 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has a very expressive bouquet with ebullient red and blue fruit combined with violet and crushed stone scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, nicely poised with quite a strict finish that indicates that this will need some bottle age.Inc. VAT£223.32 -

Dark purple black, full of energy, almost too much, the fruit is pretty ripe as well, some black cherry notes, balanced on the palate, some coffee to finish. Wouldn’t want it to be any riper. Always a lower acid site. 13.3% but the aromatics show that it needed to be picked. Tasted: December 2021.Inc. VAT£998.29 -
Decanter (95)
Méo's Boudots is striking in its purity of fruit, with pure mulberry aromas and peony, smoke, and earth notes. The texture is silky, yet there is also impressive density and length. The grapes come from a parcel of just over a hectare at the base of the slope. This delicious wine is a model of elegance and finesse that demonstrates the virtues of the Vosne side of the village. Méo relates that he has revolutionized his barrel regime and that almost everything is aged in light toast casks.Inc. VAT£1,288.32 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (92)
The 1991 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Murgers 1er Cru is fully mature on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, undergrowth, and hints of citrus peel and yuzu in the background that lend plenty of vim. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry. More like a 1990 in some ways, but there is fine grip, a little dryness creeping in on the back palate with tobacco notes gathering pace towards the finish. This is certainly commendable given its age. Tasted at the Méo-Camuzet dinner at Arbor in Hong Kong.Inc. VAT£706.13 -
(6x75cl) 2013Vinous (90-93)
Bright, dark red. Slightly reduced aromas of cherry, iron, red licorice and dried flowers. Sappy and sweet on the palate, and much easier to taste today than the Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes despite its solid underlying structure. Finishes savory and lightly saline, with noteworthy subtle length.Inc. VAT£1,305.12 -
Vinous (91-93)
(14% alcohol!): Dark red with ruby tones. Deep, musky scents of black raspberry, smoke and game; very ripe but reserved. Dense, tactile and concentrated, with its raspberry, animal fur, chocolate and saline flavors communicating an impression of strong dry extract. More than enough stuffing here to support the ripe tannins.Inc. VAT£217.73 -
Wine Advocate (92-94)
The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing especially well, unwinding in the glass with notes of sweet wild berries, plums, sweet soil tones and smoked meats. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, textural and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Like many of Méo's 2018s, I suspect it will offer a broad drinking window.Inc. VAT£1,007.52 -

The 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers is showing particularly well—just like its 2018 predecessor at the same stage of its élevage. Pick up some 2020 while you can as 11 barrels were made. In 2021, only four were made. This will need a few years to come around with its slightly drying tannins, but otherwise, this is almost ready to enjoy. The mid-palate feels satiny and tastes of black cherries and licorice. The whole package is lifted by well-placed acidity that dances across the back palate. 2024-30Inc. VAT£762.48 -
(6x75cl) 2021Burghound (91-94)
(Sweet Spot Outstanding) Moderate reduction with some wood influence blurs the underlying fruit today. Otherwise, the ripe, suave, round and powerful broad-shouldered flavors exude a fine minerality on the muscular, mouth coating and wonderfully persistent finish that is both dusty and moderately austere. While this should be reasonably approachable after 7 to 8 years, it should also be capable of repaying 12+ years of cellaring.Inc. VAT£1,061.29 -
Burghound (90-93)
(from a .73 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). A deft application of wood sets off the markedly ripe yet still nicely fresh nose of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and warm earth. As one would reasonably expect, there is better volume and density to the more powerful medium-bodied flavors that are at once rich and caressing before terminating in a palate soaking, very firm and sneaky long finish. Lovely and a wine that should be approachable after only 5-ish years yet easily reward a decade plus of cellaringInc. VAT£1,207.92 -

A bright vigorous purple. The nose starts very well, dark cherry and blackberry, while the fruit on the palate is in more luxurious mode, possibly the sample needs freshening. This is in morello cherry territory with quite a coating of oak. More sumptuous all round than Boudots, so depends which style you prefer. Higher alcohol, just under 14%. Drink from 2031-2037. The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Perrières 1er Cru is under the négoce label, although Méo-Camuzet is responsible for both viticulture and winemaking. This has a clean, pure floral bouquet of blueberry and light cassis aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite compact and displaying good density. Surprisingly muscular toward the finish. Very primal and a bit burly at the moment. I would like to see just a little more elegance.Inc. VAT£478.00 -

The 2012 Richebourg towers on the palate with huge tannins and almost a severe expression of structure. There is gorgeous depth and brightness in the fruit, but the tannins are searing in their intensity. Still, there is a crystalline purity to the flavors here that is totally compelling. I can't imagine the 2012 drinking well before its 15th birthday, and even that is likely to be optimistic.Inc. VAT£2,512.31 -

Saturated, deep red-ruby. Blackberry and cassis aromas are complicated by coffee and a subtle floral character, with some sweet oak adding another dimension. Densely packed and sappy, with an urgent quality and superb lift to the crushed dark berry fruit. A wonderfully saline, soil-driven wine with outstanding inner-mouth tension. The extremely long, slowly mounting finishes features a serious tannic backbone and outstanding vibrancy. Built for a long evolution in bottle.Inc. VAT£2,329.64 -

Otherwise there is breathtakingly good concentration to the broad-shouldered, succulent and lavishly rich flavors that also possess an almost haunting inner mouth perfume of spice and floral elements. There is superb power and buckets of dry extract and despite the imposing size and weight this remains refined and immaculately well-balanced on the massively long finale.
