The 2022 features soulful, super-ripe cassis and bramble fruit aromas with a savoury, smoky edge. The texture is dense and concentrated, with abundant tannin and enough freshness to drive this to an impressively long finish. The grapes are from Pataille's parcel of more than two hectares of mature vines planted in this south-east facing site's limestone pebbles and clay soil. • Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy Rouge 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Marsannay Clos du Roy was racked a couple of weeks before my visit. It has an opulent bouquet with ripe red cherries, crushed strawberry and light Indian ink aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with quite chewy tannins, very structured and dense, although at the moment it does not convey the same finesse as some of Pataille’s other cuvées.
  • Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy Rouge 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Marsannay Clos du Roy has a nicely poised bouquet with black cherry and mulberry fruit, floral scents emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with firm tannins, very saline with a briny finish. Excellent.

  • Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy Rouge 2022 (6x75cl)

    Decanter (95)

The Marsannay Clos du Roy from Pataille is consistently among the top wines of the northern Côte de Nuits. It is slightly closed at present, but it should open in three to five years and drink well for at least another 20 years after that.

Thick and velvety on entry, then pliant and broad in the middle, with multidimensional flavors of dark fruits, pungent minerality, pepper, herbs, mocha and brown spices saturating the entire palate. I don't find this closed today but it will surely shut down soon. This voluptuous wine boasts superb lift and outstanding peppery persistence. Sylvie finds this too powerful. My father loves young wines, though, she told me. The 2000 is too old for him; he loves the 2003. This calls for a good decade of cellaring.

With time in the glass, the wine turns more delicate, showing another side of its personality. A 65 note of licorice adds complexity on the multi-dimensional finish. Esmonin used 100% whole clusters for the fruit from the top of the vineyard, but fully destemmed the fruit from the bottom of the hill, resulting in about 70% whole clusters for the final blend. Good deep red with ruby tones. Ripe, deep perfume of black cherry, dark berries, crushed rock, wild herbs and game lifted by a peppery topnote. Very concentrated, intense, taut wine with terrific volume and inner-mouth energy. A captivating floral quality contributes another dimension. Explosive on the back end, saturating the mouth and exciting the salivary glands. Finishes with terrific late spicy lift. This wonderfully perfumed, classy wine needs time. Consumers will probably prefer the 2014 but the '13 is longer and has more finesse, said Sylvie Esmonin, adding that the 2014 doesn't have the same shoulders.
