France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru is expressive on the nose with dark berry fruit, sous-bois, just a touch of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet entry, ripe red cherry mixed with allspice and white pepper, segueing into a quite a concentrated finish with a long spicy after that might deceive you into think there are stems here. One of my picks from Taupenot-Merme this year.

  • Taupenot Merme Morey-Saint-Denis 2016 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90-92)

The 2016 Morey Saint Denis Village has a more open and expressive, perhaps more vivacious bouquet than the Chambolle-Musigny. This is very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, very well balanced with a superb line of acidity and a natural, you could say almost effortless finish that is a joy. What a great village cru this is.

  • Taupenot Merme Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2010 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Les Pruliers is one of the more immediate of the 1er Crus at Taupenot-Merme. A burst of dark red fruit flows through to the juicy, expressive finish. The firm tannins need time to soften, but I don’t see the Pruliers ever becoming as refined as the very best wines in this lineup. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2025.

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2019 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru I includes 50% whole bunch and 30% new oak. Pascal Marchand said that this is an example of "infusion" winemaking, not seeing many punchdowns during cuvaison. The bouquet is very perfumed; cracked black pepper and tertiary aromas slightly occlude the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, leading to an elegant, peppery finish. Very much a lighter style from Tawse. I am not sure it has long-term potential but that is a moot point as it is so delicious.

The 2017 Tauzinat L'Hermitage has developed into a lovely wine. Plump, juicy and inviting, the 2017 is simply impeccable, not to mention incredibly delicious. Sweet tobacco, chocolate, black cherry, and dark spice all meld together in this racy yet mid-weight Saint-Émilion. Best of all, the 2017 is a terrific value. Tasted two times.

  • Tauzinat l'Hermitage 2018 (3x150cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92+)

The 2018 Tauzinat l’Hermitage has quite a refined and harmonious bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry, melted tar and light incense aromas. I appreciate the way it unfolds. The palate is medium-bodied with supple yet quite firm tannins, but what I really love about this is the cashmere finish that has a spring in its step. Excellent.

The 2018 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru is matured with 30% whole bunch and 50% new oak. It has a very attractive bouquet of brambly red fruit, rose petals and light undergrowth aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers a dash of white pepper on the opening. Well balanced, with quite a structured and serious finish. Excellent.

  • Tawse Beaune 1er Cru Clos Roi 2019 (6x75cl)

  • Tawse Beaune 1er Cru Clos Roi 2023 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (89-91)

Pungent aromas of reduction and wood toast are all that can be discerned on the brooding nose. By contrast, there is good punch to the smoky medium weight flavors that are generous and quite rich while maintaining good balance on the nicely persistent finale. This could use better depth but that should come in time.
  • Tawse Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2020 Beaune Teurons 1er Cru contains 25% whole bunch with 20% new oak. There was a bit of reduction on the nose here, but the palate is lively and expressive with candied red berry fruit, orange zest and fine mineralité. This should turn into a very delicious Beaune but it will need time.

The 2021 Beaune Teurons 1er Cru comes across a little subdued on the nose but it opens in the glass, with red fruit, touches of black pepper, becoming quite floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine weight, lively red fruit with a touch of spice on the finish. Very fine.

(Sweet Spot) (from Bas de Teurons). An elegant, pure and airy nose also freely reveals its aromas the essence of red currant, cherry and pretty floral nuances. The refined, energetic and well-detailed medium weight flavors possess a lacy mouthfeel while exuding a subtle bead of minerality on the youthfully austere and beautifully long finale. This is lovely and very Teurons in style.

  • Tawse Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye Morgeot Blanc 2023 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)

Pale lemon colour. A clean clear cut white fruit here. Riper apples start to show and a sense of the flesh from this clay-based but stone rich soil. Plenty of depth on the palate, this is very true to its origins. Just the right acidity to back up the finish. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.

It becomes spicier with aeration, revealing hints of cumin and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, smooth and beautifully balanced, the oak seamlessly integrated.
