All destemmed, aged for 18 months in demi-muids. Remarkable aromatic finesse already, boding well for the future; it majors on rich, ripe fruit rather than oak. Very full and rounded, but full of life and energy, this is buzzing with vitality. It has fresh, lip-smacking acidity and tannin, and a very long finish. A fantastic balance between freshness, concentration and pure, regal Hermitage fruit. Whatever style of Hermitage you like, this shouldn’t disappoint - it has depth and power as well as finesse. Very impressive, complete wine.

Vinous (96)

Opaque violet color. A highly fragrant bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, exotic spices, olive, pipe tobacco and candied flowers; a smoky mineral note builds as the wine opens up. Juicy and sharply focused on the mineral-inflected palate, offering intense, mineral-accented boysenberry, bitter cherry, licorice and violet pastille flavors with a touch of vanilla. The floral note comes back strong on the impressively long finish, which features youthfully grippy tannins and lingering spiciness. I also had the chance to try the 2010 version of this wine, and it was a knockout, with deep dark fruit character and suave floral and exotic spice accents. There's still plenty of structure present, so a little time in a decanter, or just plain old patience, is strongly advised.

I can’t say the same thing about the 2010 Cornas, as it’s crazily backwards, concentrated and structured, and needs some bottle age to round into form. Nevertheless, the incredible quality is present in its purity, focus, full-bodied richness and awesome finish. Give it another 3-4 years and enjoy it over the following 15-20 years (if not more).

The Delorme Brother’s 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois has been incredibly consistent for me, and is always an upper-90s scoring wine. A big, full-bodied, structured effort, its inky purple color is followed by a terrific bouquet of ripe black fruits, toasted spice, graphite, chocolate and garrigue. Made from 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and the rest 5% Vaccarèse, brought up 30% in barrels and 70% in stainless steel, it will have another 10-15 years of prime drinking.

One of the all-time greats from this estate is the still inky colored 1999 Cote Rotie. From a hot year that had many vignerons struggling with vinification issues, Jean-Paul compared 1999 to 2009 more than once. One sexy Cote Rotie that's just hard to resist, it's drinking perfectly today but will evolve nicely for another decade or more.

Exhibit the distinctive characteristics of France's Rhône Valley with Domaine Saint Gayan Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007. Crafted by the meticulous Ronchia family, this exquisite blend integrates Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault grapes, epitomising the wine's historic Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The grapes are harvested by hand from vines aged up to 100 years old, fermented in stainless steel, and matured in oak foudres to uphold the integrity of the vintage's complex structure. The resulting wine showcases a deep, ruby hue, with rich flavours of red and dark fruits enhanced by a seamless blend of spices, earthiness and well-integrated tannins. The Domaine Saint Gayan Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2007 is a proper tribute to its region, offering immaculate balance and an extended finish, fabulous for pairing with game or red meat dishes. Add this impeccable vintage to your refined wine collection and appreciate the unique traits it offers as it continues to evolve over the next decade.
