France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2011 is more reserved on the nose than their Chaumées, but there is a touch more complexity, the brambly red and black fruit infused with fine minerality and tension. The palate is smooth and rounded on the entry with a lot of extraction so that it feels plump around the middle. Juicy and pure, what it lacks in complexity is compensated by its saturated tannins and opulent blueberry-tinged finish that is just missing some persistence, cutting away before you have had an opportunity to show your gratitude.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru comes from 0.5811 hectares of vine (why not be accurate?) split over two plots on either side of the single-track road that traverses the vineyard. It has a delicate, floral bouquet of more of the pressed rose petal aromas one finds on the Vosne-Romanée Chaumes, though here a touch more orange pith and chalk emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins and fine acidity. A refined Suchots that eschews the opulent nature of this vineyard, aiming for something sleeker and more understated. There is a pleasant touch of black pepper right on the finish. Fine.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, just a dab of oak to be fully subsumed, but with plenty of weight and volume on the pretty, quite spicy finish. Wine Advocate (93)

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass to offer up a youthfully reserved bouquet of blackberries, cherries, plums, grilled game bird, rich soil and smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, rich and voluptuous, with a succulent core of fruit, vibrant fruit flavors and a fine-grained framing of structuring tannins. It's appreciably more reserved than earlier renditions of this cuvée, perhaps because Maxime Cheurlin now has an air-conditioned cellar and is maturing his wine for two winters in barrel. It will be interesting to follow its evolution over the coming decade.

Now this has a great bouquet: very well defined with intense black cherry and kirsch aromas, deftly controlled and focused. The medium-bodied palate displays dense tannin, and the new oak is quite vocal at the moment but should be subsumed with bottle age. Do I think less new oak would have been preferable? Yes. But I still think this should mature into a fine Les Beaux Monts.

  • Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (89-91)

From vines just behind the maison towards the Route Nationale, the 2013 Vosne Romanée has a precise bouquet, dark berries and a touch of black tea, fine delineation here and poise. The palate is medium-bodied and displays good weight in the mouth. It does not quite have the complexity of the 2012 on the finish, but still, this will be a delicious Vosne-Romanée.

  • Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

Bright ruby-red. Very expressive aromas of cherry, smoky minerals and coffee. Lovely silky, spicy, mineral-driven village wine with intense flavors of dark cherry, raspberry and chocolate, plus a hint of menthol. Still needs a couple years to absorb its dusty, slightly chocolatey tannins. Dry and classic.

  • Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee 2017 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village confirms the promise it showed in barrel, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, peonies and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with succulent acids, melting tannins and a long and perfumed finish. While it's deceptively approachable, long-time followers of this cuvée will know that it will amply reward bottle age with enhanced depth and complexity.

  • Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee 2018 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from three or four parcels within the commune. It has slightly darker fruit compared to the La Colombière, perhaps not quite as pixelated in style. The palate is fleshy and forward with succulent ripe tannins, good density and layer of raspberry, strawberry and spicebox toward the finish. Just a delicious Vosne-Romanée.

  • Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (86-88)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from all the domaine’s parcels except for La Colombière. This has a fragrant bouquet of rose-petal-tinged dark berry fruit; the 40% new oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. A little pinched at the moment, but it will flesh out with aeration. Fine.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from the four different parcels as usual. Matured in 25% new oak, it has a tightly wound bouquet with redcurrant and cranberry fruit, touches of violet unfolding with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety texture, sensual and refined, extremely pure with not a hair out of place on the finish. Gorgeous.

  • Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanee 2021 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of four parcels, cropped at 36hL/ha and matured in one-third new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with wilted violets infusing the red berry fruit. The palate has a sense of brightness on the entry, hints of confit strawberry, just a very light marine note with a finely-structured, lightly-spiced, bitter cherry finish. This will be difficult to resist young.

  • Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2014 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (92)

Full medium red. Sexy, slightly high-toned fruit-salad aromas are accented by minerals and spices. Fat, fleshy and ripe, with creamy red and black fruit flavors firmed by a sound mineral underpinning. This round, concentrated wine delivers a lovely combination of energy and sucrosité. Finishes with ripe tannins and serious length. Maxime Cheurlin told me he could enjoy this wine tonight, adding that he likes his wines on the young side.

  • Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2016 (6x75cl)

  • Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts is completely de-stemmed and raised in 100% new oak.

  • Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2019 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a very detailed, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry jam and light orange peel aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tarry opening, a smear of dark chocolate combining nicely with the dark berry fruit, but it is unapologetically backward and surly on the finish compared with the Echézeaux or the Vosne Les Chaumes, so give it some serious cellaring.
