A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru includes 20% whole bunches this year. It has a slight mintiness on the nose, quite generous if not as complex as the Corton-Bressandes tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite strict and fresh with a chalky texture, and a slightly curmudgeonly finish. Give this three to four years in bottle to lighten up.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is matured with 35% whole bunch and 60% new oak. It has a slightly opaque bouquet, closed and not ready to come out and play at this early stage. The palate is grippy on the entry and quite oaky, and the wood tannins feel a little intrusive toward the finish. Hopefully this will meld together with bottle age, but this year I prefer the Corton-Bressandes tasted alongside.

The 2008 Clos de Vougeot possesses notable energy and power, even if today it is quite reticent. The 2008 is a muscular, cool Clos de Vougeot laced with dark fruit. From time to time the wine’s inner perfume emerges, hinting at what awaits those who are disciplined enough to bury this wine in the deepest corner of the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033.

Bright red. Aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, red licorice, smoke and flowers. Suave and fine-grained; comes across as suppler than the 2014. Delivers lovely fruit sweetness but also serious medicinal reserve; will this shut down in bottle? Turned more tannic with air and showed its firm spine. This very fresh Clos Vougeot will need at least a few years in the bottle.

Somewhat surprisingly this is notably more elegant than it usually is with its expressive nose of black and red pinot fruit, spice and abundant earth and tea scents. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the precise, muscular and powerful flavors that possess excellent size, weight and finishing punch on the youthfully austere, firm and huge finale that is borderline chewy. This may be moderately more elegant than usual but it remains a Clos de Vougeot all the same and one that it going to require fully 15 years to reach its apogee. If you have the patience, this is knock-out good for the appellation.

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a detailed, precise bouquet, very pure with ripe dark cherries, kirsch, orange sorbet and subtle graphite aromas. It is one of the classiest that you will come across from this ancient vineyard this year. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin that feel a little fuller and suppler than the premier cru Vosne-Romanées. Grippy in the mouth with an effervescent finish, this is a long-term Clos de Vougeot that will age effortlessly over 20-30 years.

70% crop achieved, so perhaps the helicopter treatment worked. A deeper dense purple, with a serious concentration of fruit here. The advantage of the vines which were less ravaged. Then darker fruit, almost a chocolate nose, a little foursquare as per its terroir, small waves of darker fruit coming through behind, a dark plum for example, then an evenly balanced finish between fruit, tannin and acidity. As with several wines in the range there is a noticeable touch of menthol adding a top note to the earthy black raspberry aromas. There is fine mid-palate density and dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel to the delicious broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent length on the very firmly structured and moderately austere finale. This will very definitely need at least 8 to 10 years of cellar time and 15 to 18 would be better.

A very ripe nose features notes of plum, cassis, humus, forest floor and violet. The velvet-textured, concentrated and very serious big-bodied flavors possess seemingly endless reserves of sappy dry extract which helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the mocha-infused finish. This beautifully complex effort is less austere than it usually is at this point though the structure makes it pointedly clear that this is going to age for a very long time.

This is a Clos de Vougeot with a dense and velvety texture that shows richness and structured. Yet, there is a friendliness and polish to the palate. Hazelnut and cream undertones. Reserved and almost shy at this point. Savory and flavorful. Drink in 2021.
