France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Two bottles of the 2010 Grand Puy-Lacoste were opened, the first showing just a little oxidation. The second has an attractive minty bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit laced with subtle marine/seaweed notes, a touch of graphite developing with time. More closed than when I tasted it earlier this year, the 2010 Cote Rotie Chateau d’Ampuis is an incredible effort that’s made from 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier. Coming from the estate’s top sites and aged 38 months in new oak, it has no problem standing beside the top three single-vineyard releases. Crème de cassis, vanilla bean, smoked meats and licorice all flow to a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, structured Cote Rotie that needs another 5-6 years of bottle age, but will keep for 2-3 decades.

A wine that's certainly not for those seeking instant gratification, the 2010 Cote Rotie la Landonne is a powerhouse Cote Rotie that offers up deep, masculine notes of crushed rocks, smoked meats, game, espresso and assorted dark cassis and currant-like fruit. Full-bodied, tight, structured and backward, with fabulous mid-palate density and length, it needs to be forgotten in the cellar for a decade, but will have 40-50 years of overall longevity.

As to three single parcel releases, I reviewed the 2010 Cote Rotie La Mouline earlier this year, but was more than happy to taste it again (lucky me) for this report. Incorporating a full 11% of Viognier and coming from the steep, terraced vines in the Cote Blonde lieu-dit, it sports a heavenly bouquet of spring flowers, incense, violets, cured meats and sweet cassis. Full-bodied, voluptuous and as seamless as they come, Syrah just doesn’t get any more alluring, sexy or impressive. Give it 5-6 years and drink bottles over the following 2 decades or more.

As with the 2009, the 2010 Côte Rôtie La Turque represents the pinnacle of red wine and, in this reviewer’s opinion, couldn’t be any better. A dense purple color is followed by a powerful, masculine wine that has textbook ripe blackberry and cassis fruits interwoven with gorgeous floral, gamey, bloody, and exotic aromas and flavors. It’s concentrated, full-bodied, and multi-dimensional on the palate, with sweet, polished tannins, and a massive finish. It’s just now at the early stages of its drink window and have another 30 years of prime drinking ahead!

As ever when tasting the two together, the striking thing is the difference in character rather than quality between 2009 and 2010. This is tighter, more structured in its concentration, more broad shouldered, but still intensely impressive and full of pleasure. Neither are ready to go yet, but this feels like it will last longer, and feels extremely Haut-Bailly in spirit, with an elegant but complex personality, and a grip that doesn't make a big deal of its power but refuses to give up. Blackberry, bilberry, black chocolate and pencil. Harvest September 22 to October 14.

The 2010 La Parde de Haut-Bailly is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. I prefer the nose on the 2010 compared to the 2005 since it conveys more detail and precision: blackberry, raspberry, cedar with just a touch of fresh fig lending more personality than the 2005. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy textured entry. There is a strong graphite element to this La Parde de Haut-Bailly, the acidity well judged with a gentle grip in the mouth, mainly black fruit with an intense finish. I admire the persistence of this Deuxième Vin and the unbridled freshness. Given the price, I bet this is one of the killer purchases if you can find some. Tasted March 2017.

Pure perfection and one of truly legendary wines out there, the 2010 is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc that hit a whopping 14.6% natural alcohol, with a healthy pH of 3.7. This deep rich, opulent beauty is just now at the early stages of its prime drink window and has an incredible array of blackcurrants, chocolate, truffly earth, graphite, and hints of tobacco. A massive wine in every sense, it still somehow stays weightless and graceful, with silky, building tannins, flawless balance, and just everything in the right place. It needs an hour or two in a decanter if drinking any time soon, and it's going to have upwards of 75-100 years of ultimate longevity.

Medium red. Explosive aromas of red berries, licorice, chocolate and underbrush. Not particularly fleshy but juicy and sharply delineated, with terrific cut to the tangy dark berry and spice flavors. Given its firm spine of acids and tannins, this Volnay also boasts lovely charm and delicacy. Finishes very long and perfumed. (Incidentally, Boillot believes that his 2010s will remain open, but I'd still give this wine at least five or six years in the cellar, as it's likely to put on weight in bottle.)

(13.8% alcohol with a bit of chaptalization, according to winemaker Charles Van Canneyt): Deep, full red. Very recent but pure nose eventually reveals scents of musky wild red fruits and smoky, stony minerality; a real essence of Burgundy. Deep and thick on the palate; dense with extract and utterly smooth too but with explosive energy suggesting that this wine will repay long aging. Demonstrative and charming, Selosse's 2010 Extra-Brut Millésime will be a great vintage to drink while patient readers are waiting on the 2010. Bursting from the glass with botrytis-inflected aromas of tangerine, crisp yellow orchard fruit, citrus blossom, clear honey and toasted nuts, it's full-bodied, satiny and pillowy, with an open, expressive profile that lends it real immediacy. Guillaume Selosse explains that to produce the Millésime, he doesn't select the "best" barrels from each of the lieux-dits, but rather those with a more pronounced personality. The 2010 likely won't be the most long-lived vintage of this bottling, but it will deliver enormous pleasure over the next decade.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Good medium red. Wild red fruits, cinnamon, cocoa and flowers on the nose. Less silky than the wines from Chambolle but dense, sappy and energetic, and quite fine and perfumed in the mid-palate for Nuits Saint Georges. Very firmly structured wine with serious building tannins that currently cut off the fruit. This should develop gracefully. Mugnier made an approximation of the final blend by combining samples from each lot, noting that there will probably not be a Clos des Fourches in 2010 as the quality of the grapes was consistently high.

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Aux Boudots comes across as weighty and substantial, especially after the Roncières. Black cherries, plums, graphite, menthol, flowers and deep, exotic spices meld together impressively in this totally striking wine. The Boudots boasts tremendous textural depth and intensity all the way through to the round, sensual finish. At times it comes across as very Vosne-like, hardly a surprise given that Boudots lies next to Malconsorts.

Good deep red. Liqueur-like raspberry, black cherry, mocha and cocoa on the very ripe nose. Powerful but a bit rustic following the Nuits Boudots, with a dominant flavor of black cherry cough syrup. Pure perfection, the 2010 Hermitage reminds Jean-Louis Chave of their 1990. It appears to be a richer, fresher example of what I remember the 1990 tasting like in 1992. The 2010 likely won't be the most long-lived vintage of this bottling, but it will deliver enormous pleasure over the next decade.

Demonstrative and charming, Selosse's 2010 Extra-Brut Millésime will be a great vintage to drink while patient readers are waiting on the 2010.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2010 Nuits St. Georges Aux Boudots comes across as weighty and substantial, especially after the Roncières. Black cherries, plums, graphite, menthol, flowers and deep, exotic spices meld together impressively in this totally striking wine. The Boudots boasts tremendous textural depth and intensity all the way through to the round, sensual finish. At times it comes across as very Vosne-like, hardly a surprise given that Boudots lies next to Malconsorts.

Vinous (89-91)

Good deep red. Liqueur-like raspberry, black cherry, mocha and cocoa on the very ripe nose. Powerful but a bit rustic following the Nuits Boudots, with a dominant flavor of black cherry cough syrup. I find this harder to taste today. Plenty ripe, but the oak-driven tannins currently overshadow the wine's finishing fruit.

Burghound (95)

This is also notably floral in character with a panoply of spice elements that add both depth and breadth to the cool cherry, raspberry and red currant aromas. As was the case with the Beaux Monts there is a spicy inner mouth perfume to the delicious and classy middle weight flavors that are shaped by sophisticated and very fine tannins, all wrapped in a mouth coating, focused and seriously persistent finish. A classic RSV.

Wine Advocate (100)

Pure perfection, the 2010 Hermitage reminds Jean-Louis Chave of their 1990. It appears to be a richer, fresher example of what I remember the 1990 tasting like in 1992. The wine exhibits an opaque purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of sweet blackberry fruit intermixed with creme de cassis, lead pencil shavings, acacia flowers, bouquet garni, meat and crushed rocks. Full-bodied and stunningly rich with laser-like precision, this is a powerful, massive yet exceptionally well-balanced wine that should be forgotten for a decade and drunk over the following 30-40 years.
