France
The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.
In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.
Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.
The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.
In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.
In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.
These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

Burghound (92)I slightly misjudged this as it has really harmonized in the last 6 months with its explosive and spicy black fruit nose and robust yet stylish and classy full-bodied flavors of considerable depth, weight, power and length. A really lovely effort of impressive ripeness and density for the vintage and one that should amply reward patience over the medium term. In short, this is most impressive. |

Vinous (91+)Good deep red. Reticent nose offers roasted raspberry, brown spices, woodsmoke, pepper and tapenade. Powerful and rather closed; much less approachable today than the basic bottling, showing more oak and a strong acid spine. Pure and linear. Best today on the long, subtle, perfumed aftertaste. This needs at least five years in the cellar. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93)The 2001 Sociando-Mallet is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between September 26 and October 12. This vintage was highly rated, and I can understand why. It has a very open, expressive bouquet of blackberry, briar, sandalwood and a touch of wild fennel that keeps drawing you in. The youthful palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, and the long, tender raspberry- and Chinese-five-spice-tinged finish is a treat. This is certainly one of the most elegant Sociando-Mallets. Enjoy it over the next decade. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet. |

Wine Spectator (98)Gorgeous aromas of honey, passion fruit, mango and candied lemon rind. Full-bodied and ultraconcentrated, yet balanced and refined. It lasts for minutes on the palate. This has just about everything in the right place. Stunning. Best after 2009. 6,665 cases made. -JS |

Vinous (92)Medium red. At once mature and vibrant on the nose, offering rich scents of plum, tobacco, spices, mocha and underbrush. A juicy, spicy wine with modest flesh and texture but intriguing vinosity. Aeration brought fresher red fruits and even more energy and thrust. A savory, classically dry, middle-of-the-road style, displaying a captivating juicy coolness and better integration of acidity and tannins than the '04. A beauty in the context of its vintage. Trapet told me that this wine's malolactic fermentation did not finish until the summer of 2002. (13.3% alcohol; 3.55 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity; 39.5 h/h) |

Jeb Dunnuck (96)Blended in 2010 and bottle in 2019, aged in barrels always submerged in wine, the 2001 Châteauneuf Du Pape Ange sports a still youthful ruby color as well as a beautiful bouquet of cured meats, ground pepper, tobacco, white truffle, and spice. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured, it's multi-dimensional, layered, and elegant, with a Bonneau-like complexity and style. This is a thrilling wine. |
