France

The vast and diverse wine regions of France, each with its own unique terroirs, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques, are a treasure trove.

In Bordeaux, the birthplace of some of the world's most iconic wines, esteemed vineyards such as Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, Château Latour, and Château Haut-Brion produce exceptional red wines, showcasing the art of blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The region is also renowned for its exquisite white wines, with vineyards like Château d'Yquem and Domaine de Chevalier producing legendary sweet wines.

Moving to Burgundy, the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leroy, and Domaine Armand Rousseau capture the essence of the region's revered terroir, crafting exquisite red wines from the Pinot Noir grape. Meanwhile, Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Coche-Dury are celebrated for their world-class white wines, predominantly made from Chardonnay.

The Champagne region, known for its sparkling wines, boasts illustrious houses such as Krug, Dom Pérignon, and Moët & Chandon, as well as grower-producers like Pierre Péters and Jacques Selosse. These vineyards create exceptional sparkling wines using the traditional method, offering a symphony of delicate bubbles, elegant flavors, and vibrant acidity.

In the Rhône Valley, iconic vineyards like Chapoutier, E. Guigal, and Château de Beaucastel produce remarkable red wines in the northern appellations of Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas, showcasing the elegance and power of Syrah. Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

In Alsace, vineyards such as Domaine Zind-Humbrecht and omaine Trimbach craft exquisite white wines, including Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris, expressing the region's unique terroir and varietal character.

These are just a few highlights among the diverse array of wines that France offers. From the Loire Valley's crisp whites and elegant reds to the Languedoc-Roussillon's bold and robust wines, each region presents its own vinous treasures.

  • Belair-Monange 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (90)

The 2013 Belair-Monange from JP Moueix is adorned with a Merlot-driven bouquet as you would expect, albeit more plush than I anticipated: quite floral with rose petal littered over attractive redcurrant and black cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin. No, it is not quite as detailed as the 2013 Trotanoy and perhaps comes across a little pinched on the finish, nevertheless there is decent weight and body here, a fine structure, and if graced with a couple of years in bottle it should drink well for 12-15 years. Though not achieving the level of Trotanoy, this should still drink well for several years.

On this vintage with a prolonged growing season Bollinger played the cool card, choosing to go with a high proportion of Verzenay fruit (51%). The combination of cool vintage and cool terroir is truly attractive for a blanc de noirs. • Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises 2013 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2013 Vieilles Vignes Francaises is a powerhouse. Deep in color, the 2013 is rich and ample in feel. Apricot, spice, orange jam, cedar, dried herbs, ginger, honey and leather all meld together in a VVF that is decidedly opulent and vinous, despite the cool season and harvest that took place on September 27, late by present-day standards. Sadly, production has decreased steadily since 2008. Accumulated drought has been a challenge. Those conditions are, of course, amplified by the walls of the clos in these two parcels and the naturally warm climate of Aÿ. I find the 2013 decidedly exotic and a bit on the heavy side. Those lucky enough to own it will experience one of the most distinctive wines in all of Champagne. Production was less than 1,000 bottles.

Tactile and dusty on the palate, with strong oak spice and iodine minerality currently dominating the wine's underlying orchard fruit flavors. The 2013 Blanc de Blancs La Bolorée is marked by elevated ripeness and vibrancy, the hallmarks of this very singular Champagne vintage. Rich and tropical, the 2013 could use a bit of time to soften, and yet it is so inviting today. “We had a very long harvest in 2013, Cédric Bouchard explains. "Start and stop. We began on September 22 and finished on October 4, just before a big rainstorm. We also had a lot of rain in early August, but no mildew. When that happens, the last phase of ripening can be very fast. Usually, we gain 1% in potential alcohol per week during the last 3-4 weeks of the season but in 2013, it was more like 1.5% each week, kind of like 2006.”

Extremely fine and polished tannins that go on and on. Dried lemons and oranges. Chalk at the end. Hints of bitterness in the finish with subtle botanicals. Made from a single vineyard monopole of pure pinot noir. Drink now.

Medium red. Exotic candied raspberry, game, rose petal and crushed stone on the come-hither nose. Delivers outstanding clarity of flavor without any hard edges, with the red berry and mineral flavors lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully refined and alive in the middle palate. Finishes with noble tannins and outstanding building vibrant length. A prime example of an impeccably balanced 2013 that's not a fleshpot.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru La Cabotte 2013 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

(this was 12.8% potential alcohol chaptalized to 13.5%): Bright lemon-yellow. Deep, smoky, soil-driven aromas of pineapple, nectarine, peach, iodine and clove. Tactile and dusty on the palate, with strong oak spice and iodine minerality currently dominating the wine's underlying orchard fruit flavors. More musclebound and Montrachet-like than the regular Chevalier-Montrachet in spite of possessing lower acidity (3.9 grams per liter). Finishes very long and firm, with enticing notes of orange, gingerbread and honey. Real creamy density here, but this needs more elevage.

  • Cecile Tremblay Chambolle-Musigny Les Cabottes 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

(from three parcels of vines, in Les Fremières, Aux Echanges and Les Maladières, ranging in age from 6 to 95 years): Good medium red. Fresh aroma of wild raspberry complicated by exotic notes of peach and lees. Juicy and fresh on the palate, and tighter than the village Morey; less opulent but more gripping. Still a bit youthfully clenched on the back end but I find the notes of vineyard peach and blood orange fascinating.

Crafted from grapes grown in the heart of Nuits-Saint-Georges, this vintage exhibits a beautiful dark cherry hue. • Cecile Tremblay Vosne Romanee VV 2013 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (89-92)

Good full red. A raspberry aroma is complicated by wild notes of game and smoky lees. At once dense and juicy, showing excellent creamy depth for village wine. Really spreads out on the back end to saturate the entire palate. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and serious structure. This wine is always large-scaled and reduced in the early going, notes Tremblay, and is generally the last to be bottled. Should make a superb village wine.

  • Cedric Bouchard Roses Jeanne Boloree Blanc de Blancs 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

  • Chandon de Briailles Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi 2013 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

Bright red. Sexy, high-toned aromas of strawberry, raspberry, crushed-stone minerality, rose petal and truffle, complicated by an exotic suggestion of white fruits (Claude de Nicolay compared it to a riesling!). Wonderfully perfumed and stylish, with bright acidity giving definition and lift to the strawberry and rose petal flavors, with the exotic quality carrying through in the mouth. More youthfully imploded than the Bressandes, but the tannins arrive late, allowing the wine's perfume to fill the mouth and linger.
