Vinous (92+)

Deep red with ruby highlights. Riper and blacker but a bit monolithic on the nose and palate. Black cherry and licorice scents lead to dark raspberry and crushed stone in the mouth. Not at all herbal but in a very cool style and tightly wound. This powerful, backward, youthfully uncompromising wine is hard to taste today owing to its firm tannic spine and strong medicinal reserve. Will it ultimately surpass the more sensual Grands-Echézeaux?

Bright medium red. Deep, musky nose combines cranberry, raspberry, cardamom, faded rose and crushed stone. Sweet, seamless and energetic, offering almost painful cut to the tart red berry, spice and musky underbrush flavors. Outstanding savory lift in the middle palate. Wonderfully lightness of touch here. Very backward wine with all the Cos de Bèze food groups: red fruits, minerals, spices, flowers, crushed stone. Stains the palate and leaves the taste buds quivering on the very long, firm finish. But still a baby today and in need of a decade of cellaring.

Good deep red. Wild black cherry, licorice, crushed herbs, earth and a smoky nuance on the nose. Sweet on entry, then cool and medicinal in the mid-palate, with black cherry and licorice flavors dominating. Faiveley will bottle this very backward wine considerably later than the Echézeaux, probably in June, notes Hervet. Finishes quite tight, with a serious tannic spine calling for extended cellaring.

This may not possess quite the density or sweetness to buffer its dusty tannins, at least in the early going, but it's very young and still imploded, and displays considerable power for the vintage. From a very late harvest, beginning on October 2. (13.15% alcohol; 3.4 pH; 3.7 g/l acidity; 41 h/h yield)

Burghound (95-98)

A very pungent nose displays plenty of wood and menthol influences on the quite firmly reduced aromas. There is superb richness and intensity to the seductively textured mineral-inflected flavors that are at once powerful yet refined before culminating a very backward, concentrated and stunningly long finish that just goes on and on. This is exceptionally promising and should also live for decades. In a word, brilliant.

Medium red. Aromas of cherry, blueberry, raspberry and menthol. Tangy and savory, offering good cut but modest flesh to the flavors of black cherry, pungent red berries, licorice and menthol. Finishes a touch green, with fine-grained tannins and a note of tart red cherry.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (89-92)

The 2013 Fleur Cardinale is a huge wine. Blood orange, pomegranate, white pepper and bright red cherries all explode from the glass. Unapologetically rich and intense, the 2013 is beautifully layered and voluptuous to the core. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. The 2013 has been impressive on all three occasions I have tasted it so far. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2013 Fonroque comes across as a bit compact, with limited depth and complexity. Sweet red berries, hard candy, flowers and tobacco take shape nicely in the glass, but the mid-palate never really blossoms, which allows the oak tannin to dominate.

The 2013 Criots Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru has an intense and mineral bouquet that soars – touches of white peach and apricot blossom gently drifting from the glass, flecks of chalk and even white chocolate. The palate is fresh and vibrant, hints of white peach and brioche, oyster shell and citrus peel on the precise understated finish. This will be irresistible.

Healthy medium red. Slightly stunted but pure aromas of red berries and black cherry are less exuberant than those of the Champeaux. Also more restrained and tightly wound in the mouth, but with vibrant acidity and a sensation of peppery grip giving the wine terrific inner-mouth energy. Classic 2013 in its tautness and cut. Finishes ripely tannic and long; this should be a beauty with mid-term cellaring.

In a supple, ripe style, but with terrific sappy intensity and lift to the crushed raspberry and mineral flavors. The tannins are fine-grained and sweet. A stunning example of this calcaire-rich premier cru.

Bright medium red. Black cherry, brown spices and a medicinal note on the slightly minty nose. Juicy flavors of crushed cranberry and pomegranate show slightly tart-edged acidity.

Supple, plump, dry and saline; classically backward wine but with a surprisingly pliant texture for the year. Strong, almost peppery acidity is nicely buffered by intense red fruits. Finishes with sexy sweetness and length.

From vines just behind the maison towards the Route Nationale, the 2013 Vosne Romanée has a precise bouquet, dark berries and a touch of black tea, fine delineation here and poise. The palate is medium-bodied and displays good weight in the mouth. It does not quite have the complexity of the 2012 on the finish, but still, this will be a delicious Vosne-Romanée.

Boasts compelling subtle density and sharp definition to its taut flavors of blackberry, violet, licorice, spices and minerals. In its juicy sappiness, this is like chewing on a ripe cherry. A classic Bonnes-Mares, offering superb volume without any undue weight. And an outstanding example of what phenolically ripe fruit could make in this cool vintage.

Full ruby. Fresh, mineral-accented dark berries, olive and potpourri on the intensely perfumed nose. Supple and broad in the mouth; gently sweet blackberry and floral pastille flavors are enlivened by zesty acidity and a hint of peppery spices. Closes supple, smoky and very long, with hints of spicecake and cola and youthfully firm tannins that add shape and grip.

Wine Advocate (92-94)

The wine is opaque purple, shows notes of blueberries, incense, camphor and black berry fruit, with licorice and charcoal notes. Complex aromatics are followed by a medium to full-bodied surprisingly concentrated and opulent wine with loads of fruit and stunning purity and length. This is a remarkable achievement in 2013. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
