Further south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is celebrated for its rich and full-bodied red blends, with Château Rayas and Clos des Papes leading the way.

  • Chapoutier Ermitage L'Ermite Blanc 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (100)

One of the most singular wines I’m able to taste each year is unquestionably the l’Ermite Blanc from Chapoutier and it certainly lives up to the billing in 2015. Offering what I can only describe as a liquid rock (a liqueur of rocks?) character intermixed with notes of buttered citrus, pineapple, smoked meats, charcoal and toast, the 2015 Ermitage l’Ermite is full-bodied, decadent and locked and loaded on the palate. It needs 2-3 years of cellaring and I suspect will keep for half a century

  • Chapoutier Ermitage Le Meal 2015 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

A perfect wine, the 2015 Ermitage Le Méal offers straight-up otherworldly notes of black raspberries, toasted spices, licorice, scorched earth and flowers. With a huge, unctuous profile on the palate, a stacked mid-palate, sweet, sweet tannin and awesome purity, it's as good as it gets. This cuvée is always one of the more forward, sexy wines in the lineup, but it still needs 4-6 years of bottle age and will keep for 2-3 decades.

  • Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 2015 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Another perfect wine, the 2015 Ermitage Le Pavillon comes from the Bessards lieu-dit on Hermitage, which is pure granite soils. I've said it before, but will say it again, this is unquestionably the finest, most singular vineyard for Syrah in the world. Cassis, graphite, smoked herbs, liquid rocks and violet aromas give way to a huge, concentrated, opulent and off-the-charts beauty that just hints at its ultimate potential. I wouldn’t think about opening bottles for at least a decade, after which it will keep for 4-5 decades.

(these 2015s were bottled in June of '17): Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe, almost exotic aromas of black cherry, dark plum, licorice and menthol, with lower-pitched notes of damp earth and clove; less perfumed than the 2016 version. Compellingly rich and broad but showing a bit more alcoholic weight and warmth than the '16 (the alcohol here is 13.6%, vs. 13.2% for the earlier vintage) and already shutting down in the bottle. Finishes with broad, dusty, building tannins and strong medicinal reserve.

  • Climens 2015 (12x37.5cl)

    Vinous - Neal Martin (97)

The 2015 Climens is notoriously difficult to taste in its youth, the aromatics often shutting down for the first few years and consequently showing poorly in blind tastings. Indeed, this transpires during the blind tasting of 2015 Sauternes so I retrieved another bottle and allowed it 48 hours to open. This is where this note comes from. It has a bashful bouquet compared to its peers with notes of beeswax and honeycomb, just a touch of jasmine developing in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a lightly spiced opening, notes of stem ginger and rhubarb with a vivacious and quite persistent finish that bodes well for the future. It is a great Climens in the making, but it will need a decade in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

To top it off, some meaty, savory notes creep in on the long finish, imparting some intriguing complexity.

  • Chateau de la Tour Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

(these 2015s were bottled in June of '17): Dark red with ruby tones. Very ripe, almost exotic aromas of black cherry, dark plum, licorice and menthol, with lower-pitched notes of damp earth and clove; less perfumed than the 2016 version. Compellingly rich and broad but showing a bit more alcoholic weight and warmth than the '16 (the alcohol here is 13.6%, vs. 13.2% for the earlier vintage) and already shutting down in the bottle. Finishes with broad, dusty, building tannins and strong medicinal reserve.

  • Chateau des Jacques (Louis Jadot) Morgon Cote du Py 2015 (3x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (93+)

The 2015 Morgon Côte du Py is a deep, brooding wine, unfurling in the glass with notes of spicy dark fruits, baking chocolate and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, super concentrated and powerful, with lovely acids, fine-grained tannins and a rich but vibrant finish. While it's atypically imposing and large-scaled, it's a very persuasive rendition of the balmy, dry 2015 vintage, and it looks likely to handsomely repay cellaring.

  • Clerget Volnay-Caillerets 1er Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93+)

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets is the king of the cellar chez Clerget in this vintage, offering up a ripe but bright nose of Griotte cherry, ripe plums, dried flowers and caramelized citrus peel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, bright and vibrant, with excellent depth and a tight-knit core, framed by fine-grained, chalky tannins that lend a stony quality to the lingering finish. This is a lovely Caillerets from some of the domaine’s best vine material.
