Le Cinciole's 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Aluigi is powerful and explosive in the glass. The 2015 will benefit from time to come together, but it sure is impressive today. A rush of ripe red fruit, menthol, white pepper, iron, sage, rose petal and dried flowers all race across the palate. The 2015 is dense, tannic and full of character.

The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a standout wine and I prefer it to the 2012 vintage and the 2010 vintage (that I reviewed twice over the course of a year with divergent scores). Of these wines, this vintage offers the broadest sense of intensity and generosity. The wine is also distinguished by dark fruit and spice that stand tall with clear identities. The best fruit from the estate's various vineyard sites are selected for this wine. This careful selection process makes it possible to dedicate the best fruit to a wine like this despite varying vintage conditions.

The 2007 Chianti Classico Castello di Fonterutoli blossoms on the palate with dark red cherries, flowers, spices and subtle French oak. Darker smoke, tar and licorice nuances develop in the glass, adding notable richness. A juicy, round finish caps off this magnificent wine from Fonterutoli. In fact, this is one of the most refined vintages of the Castello I can remember tasting. This wine is made with fruit from the estate's youngest vines that are now 20 years old. The organic Monteraponi 2021 Chianti Classico is Sangiovese with 5% Canaiolo from high-elevation alberello or bush-trained vines. Vintner Michele Braganti and his talented team turn out some of the most elegant expressions from this part of Tuscany. This wine showcases the unique house style despite its so-called entry-level status. Indeed, it punches above its price point to offer delicate berry nuances, wild violet, crushed limestone and more finessed nuances. Average annual production is from 35,000 to 40,000 bottles, and this is an excellent value buy.

Decanter (95)

From Gaiole, with free-draining soils, the land has formed a natural amphitheatre with southwest-facing slopes at 500m. The 2016 vintage produced intensely aromatic, structured wines. After hand-harvesting, the wine was fermented in stainless steel with regular breaking of the cap, before being transferred to Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. Aldo Fiordelli: Dense on the palate with silky ripe tannins, cherry fruit and a concentration of darker fruit, along with perfectly integrated structure. A great wine, with great potential. Andrew Jefford: Sweet and elegant aromas: fine leather, fresh red fruits, bay leaf, underbrush, a hint of fungi porcini – everything you hope for, quietly expressed. Intense and vibrant: a super wine. More dominated by its acidity than many, but that acidity is singingly bright and packed with fruit flavour. The tannins are like silk rope: smooth yet ample and gathered. Very beautiful and engaging, long, concentrated and intense. Monty Waldin: Clear, precise ripe red fruit, lovely balance and compactness to this. Drinking Window 2020 - 2028

The 2016 Chianti Classico is an explosion of floral-infused aromatics and red-toned fruit, all in the super-classic mid-weight style that is such a signature of the Querciabella house style today. Rose petal, lavender, mint and sweet raspberry fruit are pushed to the forefront. This is the first vintage in which more than half of the wine was aged in larger format oak ranging from tonneau to cask. Vineyards in Gaiole and Greve form the core of the blend, with a touch of fruit from Radda. The 2016 has enough freshness to drink well for another decade plus, but I would give it a few years in bottle for the bright acids to integrate a bit further. There are a number of pricier wines in Querciabella's range, but I am not sure any of them can match the Chianti Classico for pure pleasure. What a lovely wine it is.

The 2016 Chianti Classico impresses for the heightened level of vibrant freshness and aromatic precision that distinguishes it in a large playing field. Proprietor Maurizia di Napoli tells me that the 2016 growing season was not without its ups and downs. Farming was difficult, and not all sites came to ripeness with the same consistency because it was cooler toward the end of the growing season. Castello dei Rampolla avoids the use of sulfites in winemaking. However, these results are stunning, especially as this is positioned as a more affordable wine. The blend is 85% Sangiovese, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot.

Indeed, it punches above its price point to offer delicate berry nuances, wild violet, crushed limestone and more finessed nuances. Average annual production is from 35,000 to 40,000 bottles, and this is an excellent value buy.

Experience the luscious versatility of the Nittardi Chianti Classico Riserva 1990. Hailing from Tuscany's renowned Nittardi Estate dating back to the 16th century, this elegant wine is sourced from 100% handpicked Sangiovese grapes. Nestled amidst olives and cypress trees, the low-yielding vines grow on marl and limestone soils, fostering a rich, complex character. The vinification involves traditional methods, including fermentation in stainless steel followed by maturing in French and Slavonian oak barrels.

As a result, the Nittardi Chianti Classico Riserva 1990 promises a ruby-red allure with ripe fruit aromas, splendidly balanced by hints of liquorice, tobacco and black pepper. The balanced tannins and harmonious acidity lead to a long, lingering finish. A sheer epitome of Tuscan viticulture, this full-bodied vintage fulfils the refined palate of connoisseurs, continuing Nittardi's legacy of combining tradition and innovation in crafting world-class wines.

Poggio Scalette's 2017 Chianti Classico is forward and juicy, as so many wines are in this vintage. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, spice and leather shape this racy, pliant Chianti Classico from Poggio Scalette. The 2017 is not terribly complex, but it is quite tasty.

The 2018 Chianti Classico is a very pretty wine, not complex or super-structured, but a real delight to taste. Bright red Sangiovese fruit and sweet floral notes are front and center. Time in the glass brings out a range of cedar, leather and tobacco notes. More than anything else, the 2018 is a wine to enjoy for its fruit goodness.

Vinous (92+)

The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is ample, rich and quite seductive, which is to say very much in the style of the year. Dark red fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and incense all build as the 2017 shows off its considerable allure. This is so expressive today.

Querciabella's 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva is fabulous. Sweet perfumed aromatics open up first as this silky, mid-weight Riserva shows off its allure. The warm, dry vintage notwithstanding, Querciabella turned out a gracious, mid-weight Riserva that is incredibly elegant. The 2017 changes constantly in the glass, revealing different sides of its personality over time. It's the perfect wine for the dinner table.

Wine Advocate (93)
