The region's iconic wines, Barolo and Barbaresco, crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, epitomize power, elegance, and longevity. These wines boast flavors of red fruit, floral notes, earthy undertones, and firm tannins. Veneto, renowned for its sparkling Prosecco wines, is also famous for Amarone della Valpolicella. Vineyards like Allegrini and Quintarelli produce exceptional Amarone wines with concentrated flavors of dark fruit, spices, and a velvety texture. Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, offers a different yet captivating expression of Italian wines. Vineyards like Planeta, Donnafugata, and Tasca d'Almerita craft remarkable wines from indigenous grape varieties such as Nero d'Avola and Nerello Mascalese. These wines exhibit intense fruit flavors, vibrant acidity, and a unique volcanic minerality.

These are just a few examples of the renowned vineyards and wines Italy has to offer. From the northern regions of Piedmont and Veneto to the central regions of Tuscany and Umbria, and down to the southern regions of Sicily and Puglia, Italy's wine regions are a treasure trove of exceptional wines. The flagship wine from Tenuta di Trinoro is this gorgeous blend of 92% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. The 2020 Tenuta di Trinoro follows on the heels of the 2019 vintage that earned a perfect 100-point score. The 2020 vintage is more open-knit for sure, but it offers a very special view onto Cabernet Franc in particular. The plush black cherry softness of the Merlot is aligned magically with the dark intensity and tannic power of the Cabernet Franc. The fruit ripeness is impeccable and there are no green tones, nor are there any overripe nuances. Everything comes together with balance. For the first time, this wine is being released with an extra year of bottle age. 6,000 bottles were made.

The 2020 Terlaner Grande Cuvée Primo entrances with a delicate mix of dusty stone, freshly spiced pear, white flowers and crushed raw almonds. This is elegance personified, silky yet buoyant. Enriching hints of hazelnut custard enhance the notes of young peach as a staining of minerality amasses toward the close. The Primo finishes dramatically long yet youthfully tense, leaving a saturation of primary fruit to resonate beneath a flourish of citrus-tinged florals. The word “wow” does not do this justice. The 2020 is just a baby today. Is it Grande Cuvée or Grand Cru? Either way, it’s fantastic.

This new vintage is just terrific because it marries a sunny growing season with a grape like Syrah, which thrives in these conditions. The Tua Rita 2020 Syrah Per Sempre embraces juicy, full-bodied fruit with lots of blackberry, plum, sweet spice and campfire ash. Stefano Frascolla deliberately seeks to avoid any eucalyptus or camphor-like overtones. He looks for bold primary fruit instead. This is achieved through fruit ripeness, vineyard care and oak management. Syrah has a short harvest window, so timing is important. The vineyards are planted in marl soils with schistic material that is typical of the mineral-rich hills surrounding Suvereto. The wine goes from barrique to botte grande for an additional two or three months to stretch its legs. The 2019 vintage is gorgeous, but this expression from 2020 has more power and heft.

Manufactured by the revered Edoardo Valentini, this vintage is produced with artisanal care from 100% Trebbiano grapes - harvested manually and selected to meet exacting standards. The vinification process involves slow, natural fermentation and maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels, fostering a final product that encapsulates the uniqueness of the Abruzzo terroir.

The Valentini Trebbiano d'Abruzzo 2020 is undeniably exceptional - graced by a golden hue, the multifaceted bouquet unfolds notes of citrus fruits, medlar, and aromatic herbs. A balanced selection, the wine showcases a vibrant acidity paired harmoniously with a delicate mineral trace. Layered and complex, it offers a long and memorable finish that eloquently echoes its aromatic profile. This wine is a testament to Valentini's dedication to quality, transforming the humble Trebbiano grape into a wine befitting of the finest cellars.

Vinous (94)

The 2020 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Scarrone is stellar. Rich and expansive, the 2020 is laced with the essence of dark cherry fruit, rose petal, cinnamon, leather and mocha are front and center. All the elements all come together so effortlessly. Floral and spice notes reappear on the finish. This is such a classy and polished Barbera.

James Suckling (94)

Racy and focused. I like the aromas of lavender, violet and white roses alongside strawberry, cranberry and stone. Medium body, with firm and fine tannins that are long and succulent. It’s fine and polished. Vegan. Needs three to four years to come together.
