The 2012 Barolo Bricco Rocche is a bit deeper and more layered than the Brunate, but it, too, comes across as understated, with limited depth, complexity and pedigree, especially considering the potential of this historic Castiglione Falletto site. Today, the Bricco Rocche looks to be an early maturing Barolo.

The 2012 Barolo Mosconi is one of the big surprises of this tasting. This is a gorgeous expression with a deep and enduring sense of balance. The wine offers excellent intensity with black fruit and spice, nicely contrasted against more subtle tones of licorice, red rose and polished river stone. The tannins are firm and tight, yet they show the latitude needed for long cellar-aging.

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is remarkably pretty, with an attractive mix of bright cherry and strawberry complemented by a dusting of sweet cinnamon spice. This splashes across the palate, propelled and lifted by juicy acidity, as tart red berries add tension, and a salty flourish of minerality evolves toward the close. If there is one thing I can hold against the 2012, it’s the modestly clipped finale, where licorice tones and the slightest hint of heat linger on. That said, when paired with the right meal, this spunky and mature Brunello will have a lot of fans.

Moderately saturated bright red-ruby. Raspberry, rose oil, sour red cherry, and Asian spices on the nose, with a note of cola gaining strength with air. Refined and concentrated at the same time, with sweet red berry, herbal and mineral flavors becoming fuller with air. Finishes with impressive energy and lingering red fruit and floral qualities that are nicely buffered by fine-grained tannins. Much less powerful but then again also more graceful than the 2010 Poggio al Vento. I also noticed this picks up considerable volume with air, so my suggestion is to decant an hour or two ahead, should you decide to pop a cork early. Lay this away.

The 2012 Barolo Sorì Ginestra is one of the more understated wines I have tasted here in some time. Silky, pliant and expressive, the 2012 boasts considerable aromatic presence to match its overall weight and intensity on the palate. A host of lavender, smoke, mint, plum, spice and savory herb overtones add the closing shades of nuance.

Vivid dark red. Ripe aromas of red cherry, blood orange and stone fruit. Smooth, dense and juicy, with flavors similar to the aromas but complicated by notes of fresh herbs, sweet spices and hints of flint. Long and suave, with noble but youthfully chewy tannins providing support. Knockout classic Brunello, in fact, one of the year’s best.

Vivid deep red. Musky, deep, mineral-tinged aromas of red cherry, violet and crystallized orange peel. Sweet, lush and packed with red fruit, blood orange nectar and savory underbrush flavors; a step up in sheer size from Costanti’s 2013 Brunello. At once powerful and refined, this seriously saturates the palate with flavor, vibrant minerality and noble tannins. This is everything a great Brunello ought to be.

A decadent nose of treacle tart, chocolate, tar, tons of black fruit such as blackberries and mulberries and even ash and licorice. A dense, layered mouthfeel makes for a full-bodied palate that's explosive yet somehow so refined and pretty all at the same time. The finish goes on and on. Incredible now, but better to wait for this giant to settle well into 2020.

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (96)

The 2012 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is one of the most beautiful, precise wines of the vintage. Finely cut and chiseled, the Gavarini exudes energy and tension, both signatures of this high-altitude, Monforte site. Crushed flowers, dark red berries, mint and crushed rocks are some of the signatures. So many 2012s are open-knit, but Grasso's Gavarini is going to need at least several years in barrel. If anything, the 2012 is a bit austere, but I say that in the best sense of the word. Exotic, alluring and totally stunning, the 2012 is a real knock-out.

The 2012 Barolo Bricco Pernice is gracious, aromatic and lifted. Bright red cherry, blood orange and white pepper are some of the many notes that lift from the glass. Deceptively medium in body, the 2012 offers notable intensity in the way that only Nebbiolo can deliver. The tannins are naturally quite raw at this stage, so patience is essential.

Manetti calls 2012 'the vintage of two faces': summer was very hot until mid-August, when some rain brought cooler temperatures which slowed down ripening. In chillier zones than Panzano, Sangiovese struggled to ripen, he says. Even more expressive than when it was initially released, the 2012 has a decidedly exotic manner. Saffron, liquorice and cardamom overlay violets and earth. The tannins are polished with an intriguing chalky texture. It's compact and full but balanced, with a core of vibrant acidity and a long explosive finish. This has the bones to age brilliantly.

A deceptively medium-bodied wine, the 2012 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno hits the palate with good intensity but in the classic, mid-weight Alessandria style. Sweet tobacco, dried cherries, mint and tobacco give the wine much of its aromatic nuance. The 2012 Gaia & Rey is classy and elegant to the core. Melon, pear, almond and spice notes meld together in a striking, nuanced Chardonnay long on personality. The Gaja family has pulled back the richness here quite a bit in recent years, which has resulted in a much more precise style. Slight elements of Burgundian-like reduction linger on the close, but all the 2012 needs is to be opened in advance. What a striking wine this is.

One of the real knock-out wines of the vintage. Vajra's 2012 Barolo Ravera possesses striking aromatics, vivid, finely sculpted fruit and exceptional balance. Dark red and purplish-hued fruits, lavender, rose petal, mint and hard candy are pushed forward in a sweet, impeccable Barolo that satisfies all the senses. Deep, exquisitely layered and powerful, the 2012 Ravera is shaping up to be a real gem. This is a Barolo to revel in. Next to the Bricco Viole, the Ravera has a bit more mid-palate creaminess and overall depth.

Wine Advocate (94)

The 2012 Barolo Monprivato is a polished and bright wine that delivers a profound and beautiful array of delicate aromas. These tiny, petite threads of cherry, wild berry, ash, smoked spice and grilled herb converge with unity to produce the intensity and purpose that ultimately defines this beautiful wine. I tasted from two bottles at the winery. One had been opened a few days prior, and the second one's cork was pulled immediately before I sampled it. This review is based on my impressions from both bottles: The first one sang loud and the second revealed a muted voice. There's no doubting that this wine needs at least ten more years to evolve. Having said that, I don't think 2012 has the extreme depth and focus we've seen from this vineyard in slightly cooler vintages.

The Giuseppe Mascarello 2012 Barolo Riserva Monprivato Cà d'Morissio is only made in the best vintages. We did not see the wine in 2009 and 2011, but we did see it in 2010 and 2013. I have some reservations regarding this expression from the hot 2012 vintage. I tasted the wine at two separate moments, and although my first impression was one of enthusiasm, I was disappointed to see that it did not hold very long once the bottle was opened. This is a delicate and fragile wine that starts with wild berry and tobacco but ultimately reveals sun-drenched fruit, scorched earth and dried cherry skin. The quality of the fruit is very ripe, open and probably prone to some oncoming oxidation due to the hot and dry growing conditions. My suggestion is to catch this iconic wine on the near side instead of the far side.

The 2012 Barolo Tre Tine is lifted, precise and gracious, with beams of firm supporting tannin that give the wine its energy and sense of proportion. Tasted next to the Brunate, the Tre Tine is distinctly more aromatic, delicate and feminine in style, with plenty of bright red fruit and floral overtones. I also tasted the 2012 from a bottle opened two days prior, and the wine had retained pretty much all of its precision. Although the Brunate is the most coveted wine at Rinaldi, the Tre Tine has been impressive in its first three vintages. The 2012 is no exception. Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from the Rinaldi family's holdings in Cannubi (San Lorenzo), Ravera and Le Coste.

Created in the fertile vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba in Italy's Piedmont region, Grasso Tiziano Barolo Briccolina 2012 exemplifies meticulous winemaking. Produced by notable winemaker Tiziano Grasso, the Barolo Briccolina boasts high-quality Nebbiolo grapes grown on the south-east facing Briccolina hill. The distinct climate of the region nurtures the grapes to ripen slowly, thus building a depth of flavour. The year 2012 saw an idyllic blend of sun, rain and temperature, contributing to a well-balanced palate.

Following fermentation, the wine was meticulously matured in traditional large French oak barrels. The maturation process of Grasso Tiziano Barolo Briccolina 2012 enriches the wine's perfumed aromas and accentuates its structure and complexity. This vintage is distinguished by its deep ruby colour and rich, layered taste. It offers sumptuous notes of dark cherry, licorice and hints of earthiness with a long, superbly tannic finish, promising a perfect bottle to those patient enough to cellar it.

Wine Advocate (95+)

Il Poggione is a Brunello superstar and a vintage like this reveals every reason why that affirmation is true. From the second the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino pours into the glass, you know you are in for something special. The wine is darkly saturated and rich in appearance. Absent are those slightly amber or browning hues you often get with Sangiovese in a hot vintage. Nor does the wine show flat or tired characteristics. Instead, the quality of fruit is vibrant and rich. This is a healthy, generous and exuberant Brunello with dark density and succulent fruit flavors that are followed by integrated spice and tobacco. The balance is impressive and one thing you get here is fresh acidity. This is not to be underestimated, because the acidity quota in the 2012 vintage across the appellation is not as high or evident as usual. This is one of the year's best Brunellos.

This luxuriously garnet-hued blend hails from the heart of the prestigious Cannubi vineyard site in Italy's celebrated Barolo region. The hand-harvested Nebbiolo grapes reveal a bouquet of robust red cherries, intertwined with rosy floral undertones and intriguing nuances of tobacco and spice for an unforgettable finish. Every sip evokes the venous clay soils and sun-drenched slopes of Cannubi, cultivated passionately by the Barale Fratelli family since 1870. Aged 24 months in oak barrels, it exhibits an impeccable balance between tradition and innovation. Decant this bottle for a fuller expression of its elegant complexity. Partner the Fratelli Barale Barolo Cannubi 2012 with hearty meat dishes or aged cheeses for a gastronomic journey you'll long cherish.

A gorgeous nose of orange peel, plums and light walnuts. Some wet earth. Full to medium body with a compacted center palate. A tight ball of ripe, fine tannins. Minerals and hot stones underneath. Serious structure. No Monfortino was made so it's all here. Better in 2022.

Perfumed aromas of grape skin and roses. Medium to full body, super classic and refined. Incredible finesse and length. It is so fine and gorgeous. Makes you want to drink it. Better in 2020 but so beautiful now.

Rather sweet due to the super ripe vintage. But there's also great subtlety, enormous depth and a ton of tannin behind the opulence. The super long finish is incredibly focused. Try to wait until at least 2020. This stunning Brunello has decades of life ahead of it.

Incredible purity of fruit to this red with plums, cherries and berries. Full body, ripe and silky tannins and a fantastically long finish. Love the bitter-orange undertone to this. Drink in 2020.
