    Vangone

    About Vangone

Arguably one of the more intriguing vineyard sites in all of Napa Valley, Vangone Vineyard is situated just south of Pritchard Hill and overlooking Oakville Cross Road whilst the wines made here are from an all-star team of winemaker Sam Kaplan and vineyard manager Mario Bazan.

Vangone was purchased by Ron Davidowski and his wife Karen in 1993 after a multi-year search for property in Napa Valley with the intent to eventually build a home and plant a vineyard. The Vangone Estate is not quite Oakville, although it sits above Oakville to the east, is not quite Pritchard Hill either and is outside of the geographic borders of the Atlas Peak sub-appellation, located slightly further to the east. In a rather goldilocks fashion, Vangone Estate is its own unique site and is certainly an impressive one, located directly above Rector Reservoir, not far from the Silverado Trail.

How this stunning estate got its name is rather an amusing story. Whilst planting the vineyard, the Davisowskis found that there was an abandoned van on their land that was being used by some sneaky locals to cultivate marijuana inside. When the local police removed the marijuana plants, they refused to remove the abandoned van due to it lacking its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), thus there was no proof of ownership. After many attempts to remove the van over the following months, one of the vineyard owners emphatically stated, “I just want that van gone.” The vineyard manager then called back a few weeks later with a single statement, “Vangone.” The name stuck and the icon on the label is an abstract image of the van!

The Estate Cabernet Sauvignon released today is from Vangone’s B Block & D Block in their estate vineyard. The two blocks together brought the balance of power and elegance the team sought.

    Vangone Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (97+)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, from a mix of Block B and Block D, is another brilliant wine, if not my favorite of the trio. Cassis, graphite, tobacco, and chocolate notes make up the bulk of the nose, and it’s full-bodied, has a stunning mid-palate, and tons of obvious minerality and salinity on the finish. Aged 32 months in new barrels and with just 250 cases made, it’s well worth the extra effort to track down.
